This paper explores the difficulties of aircraft system identification, specifically parameter estimation, for a rudderless aircraft. A white box method is used in conjunction with a nonlinear six degree-of-freedom aerodynamic model for the equations of motion in order to estimate 33 parameters that govern the aerodynamic, inertial, and propulsion forces within the mathematical model. The analysis is conducted in the time-domain of system identification. Additionally, all the parameters are estimated using a single flight rather than a series of shorter flights dedicated to estimating specific sets of parameters as is typically done. A final flight plan is developed with a …
Comparison Of Theoretical And High-Fidelity Aerostructural Solutions, Jeffrey D. Taylor, Douglas F. Hunsaker
Comparison Of Theoretical And High-Fidelity Aerostructural Solutions, Jeffrey D. Taylor, Douglas F. Hunsaker
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
As contemporary aerostructural research in aircraft design trends toward high-fidelity computational methods, aerostructural solutions based on theory are often neglected or forgotten. In fact, in many modern aerostructural wing optimization studies, the elliptic lift distribution is used as a benchmark in place of theoretical aerostructural solutions with more appropriate constraints. In this paper, we review several theoretical aerostructural solutions that could be used as benchmark cases for wing design studies, and we compare them to high-fidelity solutions with similar constraints. Solutions are presented for studies with 1) constraints related to the wing integrated bending moment, 2) constraints related to the …

Characterization Of The Common Research Model Wing For Low-Fidelity Aerostructural Analysis, Jeffrey D. Taylor, Douglas F. Hunsaker
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
A characterization of the Common Research Model (CRM) wing for low-fidelity aerostructural optimization is presented. The geometric and structural properties are based on the CAD geometries and finite-element models for the CRM wing and the undeflected Common Research Model Wing (uCRM). Three approximations are presented for the elastic axis from previously-published studies on wing boxes similar to the uCRM, and approximations of the flexural and torsional rigidity are presented from a previously-published study using the uCRM wing. The characterization presented in this paper is intended to be used within low-fidelity aerostructural analysis tools to facilitate rapid design optimization and exploratory …

Performance Of A Dual Plane Airfoil Model With Varying Gap, Stagger, And Decalage Using Pressure Measurements And Particle Image Velocimetry, Salome Kenneth Nunes
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The dual-plane airfoil has been adopted in the design of aircraft wings, wind turbine blades, and propellers. The purpose of this research is to investigate the most important design parameters of a dual-plane airfoil model for the best aerodynamic performance, such as gap, stagger, and decalage. The dual-plane airfoil model was designed using the S826 profile. A mechanical mechanism with electrical actuator control is particularly designed to alter the gap and stagger smoothly, as well as the angle of attack (AOA) for each airfoil. It results in a gap range of 1.38c to 2.17c, a stagger range of -0.75c to …
Modeling Rack Force For Steering Maneuvers In A Stationary Vehicle, Nilay Kant, Raunav Chitkara, Prerit Pramod
Modeling Rack Force For Steering Maneuvers In A Stationary Vehicle, Nilay Kant, Raunav Chitkara, Prerit Pramod
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A steering system converts circular motion of the steering wheel into yaw motion of the road-wheels. In absence of a steering assist mechanism, the driver torque overcomes the tire-road friction forces, which is transmitted to the steering rack through tie rods attached to the road-wheels. The net force acting on the rack is then transmitted to the steering wheel through mechanical linkages which results in natural haptic feedback, commonly referred to as the steering feel. In an electric/hydraulic power steering, an electro-mechanical actuator applies assist force, which reduces the torque required by the driver. In order to maintain stability of …

Mechanical Properties Of Nanomodified Hybrid Gfrp Composite Materials, Micah Rop Kimutai
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The mechanical behavior of the nanomodified hybrid epoxy matrix was investigated in glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP). In this study, five nanocomposites enriched with as received halloysite, nanomer I.28E, HNT-APTES, and the hybrid combinations of the two HNTs with the nanomer I.28E were successfully fabricated. To evaluate the effects and morphological characteristics of the individual fillers and the hybrid configurations on the epoxy resin matrix, TGA, DSC, and DMA were analyzed. To understand the effect of the five configurations on the neat GFRP laminate, mode I interlaminar fracture toughness, tensile, and vibration properties were investigated. Electron microscopy testing techniques were …
Non-Equilibrium Behavior Of Large-Scale Axial Vortex Cores, Robert L. Ash, Irfan R. Zardadkhan
Non-Equilibrium Behavior Of Large-Scale Axial Vortex Cores, Robert L. Ash, Irfan R. Zardadkhan
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
A logical basis for incorporating pressure non-equilibrium and turbulent eddy viscosity in an incompressible vortex model is presented. The infrasonic acoustic source implied in our earlier work has been examined. Finally, this non-equilibrium turbulent vortex core is shown to dissipate mechanical energy more slowly than a Burgers vortex, helping us to explain the persistence of axial vortices in nature. Recent molecular dynamics simulations replicate aspects of this non-equilibrium pressure behavior.

Simulation And Modeling Of Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers Subject To Adverse Pressure Gradients Due To Concave Streamline Curvature, Gary L. Nicholson, Junji Huang, Lian Duan, Meelan M. Choudhari
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of adverse-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers over a planar concave wall are presented for a nominal freestream Mach number of 5, with the objective of assessing the limitations of the currently available Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models. The wall geometry and flow conditions of the DNS are representative of the experimental data for a Mach 4.9 turbulent boundary layer that was tested on a two-dimensional planar concave wall model in the high-speed blow-down wind tunnel located at the National Aerothermochemistry Laboratory at Texas A&M University (TAMU). The DNS was validated against the experimental results of TAMU for the …

Bicycle Wheel Aerodynamics Predictions Using Cfd: Efficiency Using Blade Element Method, Drew Vigne
Bicycle Wheel Aerodynamics Predictions Using Cfd: Efficiency Using Blade Element Method, Drew Vigne
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The cycling industry has long relied on expensive wind tunnel testing when designing aerodynamic products, particularly in the context of wheels which account for 10 to 15 percent of a cyclist's total aerodynamic drag. With the recent advent of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the industry now has an economical tool to supplement the wheel design process; however, the complex nature of rotating spoked wheels requires high resolution meshes to model at acceptable fidelity. This research investigates an alternative CFD method that lowers the computational cost of modeling aerodynamic bicycle wheels by modeling spokes using Blade Element Method (BEM). Two CFD …
Measurements Of Wind Turbine Wake Evolution And Trajectory During Morning Boundary Layer Transition And Under Wake Steering Conditions Via Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Stewart Nelson
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
In July of 2019, a flight campaign was conducted using semi-autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) at the Port Alma Kruger Energy wind farm in Ontario, Canada, to study various aspects of wind turbine wake evolution. Horizontal transects across the wakes were measured using modified fixed-wing aircraft fitted with a five-hole probe to measure the wind velocity vector. Reference boundary layer conditions were measured by an octocopter with an assortment of mounted sensors flying vertical profiles upstream of the turbines. Three experiments were conducted during the campaign, which consisted of a study on wake behavior during the morning boundary layer transition, …
Modeling Thin Layers In Material Response Solvers, Christen Setters
Modeling Thin Layers In Material Response Solvers, Christen Setters
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) are a necessary component for atmospheric entry. Most TPS contain thin layers of various materials such as ceramic coatings, pore sealers and bonding agents. When modeling TPS, these thin layers are often neglected due to the difference in scale between the TPS (centimeters) and the thin layers (micrometers). In this study, a volume-averaging flux-conservation method is implemented in the governing equations of a finite volume material response code. The model proposes the addition of a volume and area fraction coefficient which utilizes a weighted-averaging between the amount of thin layer and heat shield material in a …

Electromagnetic Formation Control Using Frequency Multiplexing, Zahra Abbasi
Electromagnetic Formation Control Using Frequency Multiplexing, Zahra Abbasi
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
This dissertation addresses control of relative positions and orientations of formation flying satellites using magnetic interactions. Electromagnetic formation flight (EMFF) is implemented, in which each satellite is equipped with a set of electromagnetic coils to generate an electromagnetic field. Traditional EMFF technique applies DC magnetic fields which lead to a nonlinear and highly coupled formation dynamics that allow for only position or orientation control of the satellites. We present a new frequency multiplexing method, which is a technique that uses multi-frequency sinusoidal controls, to approximately decouple the formation dynamics and to provide enough controls for both position and orientation control. …

Using Smart-Wifi Thermostat Data To Improve Prediction Of Residential Energy Consumption And Estimation Of Savings, Abdulrahman Alanezi, Kevin P. Hallinan, Rodwan Elhashmi
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Energy savings based upon use of smart WiFi thermostats ranging from 10 to 15% have been documented, as new features such as geofencing have been added. Here, a new benefit of smart WiFi thermostats is identified and investigated; namely, as a tool to improve the estimation accuracy of residential energy consumption and, as a result, estimation of energy savings from energy system upgrades, when only monthly energy consumption is metered. This is made possible from the higher sampling frequency of smart WiFi thermostats. In this study, collected smart WiFi data are combined with outdoor temperature data and known residential geometrical …
Theoretical Study Of Magnetic Particles In A Shear Flow Subjected To A Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki
Theoretical Study Of Magnetic Particles In A Shear Flow Subjected To A Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki
Doctoral Dissertations
"Magnetic manipulation of non-spherical magnetic microparticles is important for applications in shape-based and magnetic-based separations such as waste management, disease diagnostics, drug delivery, and mining. Manipulations of magnetic microparticles also include chain formation to assemble compositions for electronics, drug loading designs, and magnetorheological fluids for smart armor, hydraulic brakes, and dampers. In microfluidic devices, separation-formation-effectiveness depends on the shape of the channel, the shear rate, and the magnetic field strength and direction.
Particle separation and chain formation involved highly complex and computational expense-demanding studies in microfluidic devices, magnetic fields, and particle- particle/wall interactions. This research took complex experimental studies and …

Evaluation Of Murrell’S Ekf-Based Attitude Estimation Algorithm For Exploiting Multiple Attitude Sensor Configurations, Sharanabasaweshwara Asundi, Norman Fitz-Coy, Haniph Latchman
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Pico- and nano-satellites, due to their form factor and size, are limited in accommodating multiple or redundant attitude sensors. For such satellites, Murrell's implementation of the extended Kalman filter (EKF) can be exploited to accommodate multiple sensor configurations from a set of non redundant attitude sensors. The paper describes such an implementation involving a sun sensor suite and a magnetometer as attitude sensors. The implementation exploits Murrell's EKF to enable three sensor configurations, which can be operationally commanded, for satellite attitude estimation. Among the three attitude estimation schemes, (i) sun sensor suite and magnetometer, (ii) magnetic field vector and its …
Study Of The Mechanlsm Of Flow-Induced Vibrations Of A Cylinder In Proximity To A Wall, Jonathan M. Chambers
Study Of The Mechanlsm Of Flow-Induced Vibrations Of A Cylinder In Proximity To A Wall, Jonathan M. Chambers
Master’s Theses
Flexible bluff bodies exposed to a uniform fluid flow undergo vibration due to vortex-shedding from the body. This phenomenon is known as vortex-induced vibration (VIV). Structural members, such as cables, conduits, and pipes, are susceptible to VIV. Vortex-induced vibrations result in structural stresses due to elastic structural deformation from the flow-induced loading. Cylindrical structures in proximity to planar surfaces can undergo vortex-induced vibrations when the gap between the cylinder and the planar surfaces is above a critical value. This laboratory study investigated the mechanism of vibration and planar wall proximity effect on the cylinder response to the vortex shedding process. …
Fluid-Wall Interactions In Pseudopotential Lattice Boltzmann Models, Cheng Peng, Luis F. Ayala, Orlando M. Ayala
Fluid-Wall Interactions In Pseudopotential Lattice Boltzmann Models, Cheng Peng, Luis F. Ayala, Orlando M. Ayala
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Designing proper fluid-wall interaction forces to achieve proper wetting conditions is an important area of interest in pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann models. In this paper, we propose a modified fluid-wall interaction force that applies for pseudopotential models of both single-component fluids and partially miscible multicomponent fluids, such as hydrocarbon mixtures. A reliable correlation that predicts the resulting liquid contact angle on a flat solid surface is also proposed. This correlation works well over a wide variety of pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann models and thermodynamic conditions.

Design And Testing Of A Feed-Forward Control System For Deployable Vortex Generators Dependent On Angle Of Attack, Solomon B. Whitmire, Christopher J. Chapanar, Kirklin M. Anderson, Nickalus R. Amon, Daniel W. Chech
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
A vortex generator (VG hereafter) is a common feature of an aircraft wing that disturbs the flow on the leading edge of the wing, thus energizing the boundary layer and reducing flow separation. For an aircraft experiencing flow separation, VGs can increase the lift-to-drag ratio of the wing and prevent stall; however, if flow separation isn’t an issue, the unnecessary frontal area of the VGs has the potential to produce parasitic drag. This study seeks to determine whether the use of a deployment system can improve the performance of VG’s by raising or lowering them depending on the angle of …

For this project, we set out to create a lightweight carrying case that would be mounted to a DJI Phantom 3. This case is designed to transport small packages, such as medications, from a delivery vehicle to their final destination. Based on our maximum drone lifting capacity of 600 grams, our case, servomotor, and contents had to weigh less than or equal to that value. The coronavirus pandemic has led to an increase in contactless delivery options along with the push for immunocompromised people to avoid contact with people that may be sick. Our product would help transport necessary supplies …

Development Of Triangular And Tetrahedral Finite Elements For Solutions To Thermoelastic Instabilities Using Hotspotter, Cortney Samuel Leneave
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of the work presented in this thesis is to develop first-order triangular and tetrahedral elements for solutions to Thermoelastic Instabilities (TEI) regarding sliding friction systems in Hotspotter.
Hotspotter software uses a finite element method and an eigenvalue method and is an important tool because currently no other commercial software exists which solves the TEI problem for critical velocities and wave numbers of a system. Hotspotter currently uses quadrilateral and hexahedral elements for two and three dimensional analysis, respectively. Typically, tri and tet elements are used in industry when doing static and dynamic stress analysis. Therefore, the Hotspotter user …

Multidisciplinary And Multi-Objective Optimal Design Of A Cascade Control System For A Flexible Wing With Embedded Control Surfaces Having Actuator Dynamics, Christopher Stephen Greer
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
A multidisciplinary and multi-objective optimization approach that integrates the design of the control surfaces’ sizes, active control systems, and estimator for an aircraft’s wing with three control surfaces is developed. Due to its attractive stability robustness properties, a control system based on the LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulator) is built for each control surface. The geometrical parameters of the control surfaces such as the span wise and chord lengths, the design details of the LQR penalty matrices, and the locations of the estimator poles are tuned by a widely used multi-objective optimization algorithm called NSGA-II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm). Four objectives …
