An Integration Of A Modern Flight Control System Design Technique Into A Conceptual Design Stability And Controls Tool, Aeromech, Amen Omoragbon

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The aircraft conceptual design (CD) phase is the most abstract, thus challenging phase of the entire aircraft design process. It is the responsibility of the CD engineer to identify and then to explore various aircraft concepts with the goal of arriving at the most promising concept for further evaluation. During this early design phase, the discipline stability and control tends to be underrepresented due to the lack of non-linear aerodynamic and inertia data. The methodology and software AeroMech is a vehicle configuration independent aircraft conceptual design stability and control tool, developed to help the conceptual designer to address stability and …

Imbalance Response Of A Four Degree Of Freedom Rigid Rotor Supported By Hybrid Three Pad Air Foil Bearing, Prajwal Krishna Shetty Jan 2010

Imbalance Response Of A Four Degree Of Freedom Rigid Rotor Supported By Hybrid Three Pad Air Foil Bearing, Prajwal Krishna Shetty

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Air foil bearings (AFB's) are widely used in small to midsized turbomachinery. They provide safer, cleaner and cheaper bearing operation. They are simple in construction, offer very low drag friction and have very high reliability at high speed operations. A major advantage of air foil bearings compared to conventional rigid surface bearings is their superior dynamic performance in rotor bearing systems. Since there is no contact between the rotor and bearing surface, the air foil bearings have a higher service life compared to rigid surface bearings. Hybrid AFB's operate under both hydrodynamic and hydrostatic condition. The present study is a …

Laminar-Turbulent Transition For Attached And Separated Flow, Qian Zhang Jan 2010

Laminar-Turbulent Transition For Attached And Separated Flow, Qian Zhang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A major challenge in the design of turbomachinery components for aircraft gas turbine engines is high cycle fatigue failures due to flutter. Of particular concern is the subsonic/transonic stall flutter boundary which occurs at part speed near the stall line. At these operating conditions the incidence angle is large and the relative Mach number is high subsonic or transonic. Viscous effects dominate for high incidence angles.

In order to predict the flutter phenomena, accurate calculation of the steady and unsteady aerodynamic loading on the turbomachinery airfoils is necessary. The development of unsteady aerodynamic models to predict the unsteady forces and …

Processing Of Zrb2-Zrc-Zrxsiy Ceramic By Reactive Metal Penetration, Nischel B. Maheswaraiah

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The processing of ZrB2-ZrC-ZrxSiy composite by reactive metal penetration was investigated as a successor to the ZrB2-SiC composites for hypersonic vehicles application, which cannot be used for extended time at temperatures greater than 1600C due to formation of SiO and CO gases. Zirconium (Zr), zirconium disilicide (ZrSi2), and boron carbide (B4C) were reacted in graphite crucibles for 60, 120, 180, and 240 minutes. Microscopy and x-ray diffraction (XRD) deduced the formation of a heterogeneous microstructure of ZrB2-ZrC-ZrxSiy precipitates surrounded by a solidified Zr-Si melt. Unreacted boron carbide was observed in samples held at 1860C for 60 minutes and 120 minutes, …

Influence Of Interactions Between Turbulence And Radiation On Transmissivities In Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers, A. M. Feldick, L. (Lian) Duan, M. F. Modest, M. P. Martín, D. A. Levin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the current paper, a high-fidelity large eddy simulation solver is coupled to our modified line-by-line radiative transport equation solver to study the effects of absorption turbulence-radiation interations in a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer, representative of the Orion CEV entering Earth's atmosphere, at peak heating condition. The turbulent and radiation fields represent extreme conditions typical of Orion, as the simulated boundary layer represents the region of high turbulence coupled to region of highest incident radiation. A simplification in the calculation of molecular spectra with a single temperature property database in allows for tractable calculation of spectral properties. A comparison of …

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers. Part 2. Effect Of Wall Temperature, L. (Lian) Duan, I. Beekman, M. P. Martín Jan 2010

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers. Part 2. Effect Of Wall Temperature, L. (Lian) Duan, I. Beekman, M. P. Martín

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we perform direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent boundary layers at Mach 5 with the ratio of wall-to-edge temperature T w/T ℘ from 1.0 to 5.4 (Cases M5T1 to M5T5). The influence of wall cooling on Morkovin's scaling, Walz's equation, the standard and modified strong Reynolds analogies, turbulent kinetic energy budgets, compressibility effects and near-wall coherent structures is assessed. We find that many of the scaling relations used to express adiabatic compressible boundary-layer statistics in terms of incompressible boundary layers also hold for non-adiabatic cases. Compressibility effects are enhanced by wall cooling but remain insignificant, and the …

Studies Of Dynamic Crack Propagation And Crack Branching With Peridynamics, Youn Doh Ha, Florin Bobaru

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

In this paper we discuss the peridynamic analysis of dynamic crack branching in brittle materials and show results of convergence studies under uniform grid refinement (m-convergence) and under decreasing the peridynamic horizon (δ-convergence). Comparisons with experimentally obtained values are made for the crack-tip propagation speed with three different peridynamic horizons. We also analyze the influence of the particular shape of themicro-modulus function and of different materials (Duran 50 glass and soda-lime glass) on the crack propagation behavior. We show that the peridynamic solution for this problem captures all the main features, observed experimentally, of dynamic crack propagation and branching, as well …

Discrete Film Cooling In A Rocket With Curved Walls, Jonathan F. Mccall Dec 2009

Discrete Film Cooling In A Rocket With Curved Walls, Jonathan F. Mccall

Theses and Dissertations

This study quantified the effects of discrete wall-based film cooling in a rocket with curved walls. Simulations and experiments showed decreasing with wall radius of curvature, holding jet diameter constant, improves net heat flux reduction (NHFR) and adiabatic effectiveness (η) for 90˚ compound injected cylindrical jets, though η is reduced at the highest curvature. NHFR and η improved further with a high favorable stream-wise pressure gradient (K=2.1x10-5) at all tested blowing ratios, but were affected little by a high density ratio (DR=1.76) using carbon dioxide as the coolant. Experiments were run at a Reynolds number of 31K and …

Thermal Modeling Of Lithium-Ion Energy Storage Systems For Hybrid Electric Vehicles Using Computational Fluid Dynamics With Conjugate Heat Transfer, Craig R. Czlapinski Oct 2009

Thermal Modeling Of Lithium-Ion Energy Storage Systems For Hybrid Electric Vehicles Using Computational Fluid Dynamics With Conjugate Heat Transfer, Craig R. Czlapinski

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The success and performance of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) relies largely on its Energy Storage System (ESS). High temperatures and thermal variations can significantly affect a battery's performance and lifecycle. An effective thermal management system is vital to the health and safe operation of the ESS's batteries. A well designed thermal management system begins with the accurate prediction of the battery's thermal conditions. In hot climates, HEVs may be required to operate within ten degrees Celsius of the maximum safe operating temperature of their batteries. This study aims to evaluate the thermal management system of a lithium-ion based energy …

Reinforcement-Learning-Based Output-Feedback Control Of Nonstrict Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems With Application To Engine Emission Control, Peter Shih, Brian C. Kaul, Jagannathan Sarangapani, J. A. Drallmeier Oct 2009

Reinforcement-Learning-Based Output-Feedback Control Of Nonstrict Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems With Application To Engine Emission Control, Peter Shih, Brian C. Kaul, Jagannathan Sarangapani, J. A. Drallmeier

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel reinforcement-learning-based output adaptive neural network (NN) controller, which is also referred to as the adaptive-critic NN controller, is developed to deliver the desired tracking performance for a class of nonlinear discrete-time systems expressed in nonstrict feedback form in the presence of bounded and unknown disturbances. The adaptive-critic NN controller consists of an observer, a critic, and two action NNs. The observer estimates the states and output, and the two action NNs provide virtual and actual control inputs to the nonlinear discrete-time system. The critic approximates a certain strategic utility function, and the action NNs minimize the strategic utility …

Phase Change Mechanisms During Femtosecond Laser Pulse Train Ablation Of Nickel Thin Films, Xin Li, Lan Jiang, Hai-Lung Tsai Sep 2009

Phase Change Mechanisms During Femtosecond Laser Pulse Train Ablation Of Nickel Thin Films, Xin Li, Lan Jiang, Hai-Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanisms of nickel thin films irradiated by femtosecond laser pulse trains are studied by a model using molecular dynamics simulations and two-temperature model. It is found that the pulse train technology can change energy transport and corresponding phase change processes. Compared with single pulse ablation at the same total fluence, the pulse trains lead to (1) lower ablation rate with more and smaller uniform nanoparticles, (2) higher film surface temperatures and longer thermalization time, (3) much lower electron thermal conductivity that can further control heat-affected zone, (4) significantly smaller film compressive stresses and tensile stresses which reduce microcracks, and …

Rayleigh Flow Of Two-Phase Nitrous Oxide As A Hybrid Rocket Nozzle Coolant, Lauren May Nelson Sep 2009

Rayleigh Flow Of Two-Phase Nitrous Oxide As A Hybrid Rocket Nozzle Coolant, Lauren May Nelson

Master's Theses

The Mechanical Engineering Department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo currently maintains a lab-scale hybrid rocket motor for which nitrous oxide is utilized as the oxidizer in the combustion system. Because of its availability, the same two-phase (gas and liquid) nitrous oxide that is used in the combustion system is also routed around the throat of the hybrid rocket’s converging-diverging nozzle as a coolant. While this coolant system has proven effective empirically in previous tests, the physics behind the flow of the two-phase mixture is largely unexplained. This thesis provides a method for predicting some of its …

Evaluation Of Direct Diode Laser Deposited Stainless Steel 316l On 4340 Steel Substrate For Aircraft Landing Gear Application, Tian Fu, Todd E. Sparks, Frank W. Liou, Joseph William Newkirk, Zhiqiang Fan, Syamala Rani Pulugurtha, Jianzhong Ruan, Hsin-Nan Chou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

300M steel is used extensively for aircraft landing gears because of its high strength, ductility and toughness. However, like other high-strength steels, 300M steel is vulnerable to corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion cracking, which can lead to catastrophic consequences in the landing gear. Stainless steels offer a combination of corrosion, wear, and fatigue properties. But for an aircraft landing gear application a higher surface hardness is required. A laser cladding process with fast heating and cooling rates can improve the surface hardness. AISI 4340 steel is used as a lower cost alternative to 300M due to its similar composition. In …

Stability Analysis, Modeling, Simulation And Experimental Testing Of An Ems Maglev System With Structural Flexibility, Aravind M. Hanasoge Jul 2009

Stability Analysis, Modeling, Simulation And Experimental Testing Of An Ems Maglev System With Structural Flexibility, Aravind M. Hanasoge

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Vehicle-guideway interaction studies of Magnetically Levitated (Maglev) vehicles indicate that structural flexibility can adversely affect the overall stability and performance of such systems. This is one of the reasons why guideways are generally made very rigid. This in turn leads to increased cost of the overall system since guideway construction forms a significant portion of the overall cost. In this dissertation, the influence of structural flexibility on the stability of Electromagnetic Suspension (EMS) Maglev systems is studied. It is shown how inherently unstable and flexible structure EMS Maglev systems can achieve guaranteed stability by using collocated actuators and sensors, along …

A New State Observer And Flight Control Of Highly Maneuverable Aircraft, S. N. Balakrishnan, Ming Xin Jun 2009

A New State Observer And Flight Control Of Highly Maneuverable Aircraft, S. N. Balakrishnan, Ming Xin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a new nonlinear observer (θ-D observer) is proposed to estimate the feedback states for optimal control of a highly maneuverable aircraft. This observer is derived by constructing the dual of a recently developed nonlinear optimal control technique-known as the θ-D technique. The θ-D optimal control approach provides an approximate closed-form solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. An optimal flight controller using this technique is designed for a highly maneuverable aircraft operating at high angle of attack where the θ-D observer is employed to estimate the states for feedback. The structure of this observer is similar to the …

A Microfabricated Segmented-Involute-Foil Regenerator For Enhancing Reliability And Performance Of Stirling Engines: Phase Iii Final Report For The Radioisotope Power Conversion Technology Nra Contract Nas3-03124, Mounir B. Ibrahim, David Gedeon, Gary Wood, Jeffrey Mclean Jun 2009

A Microfabricated Segmented-Involute-Foil Regenerator For Enhancing Reliability And Performance Of Stirling Engines: Phase Iii Final Report For The Radioisotope Power Conversion Technology Nra Contract Nas3-03124, Mounir B. Ibrahim, David Gedeon, Gary Wood, Jeffrey Mclean

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Under Phase III of NASA Research Announcement contract NAS3-03124, a prototype nickel segmented-involute-foil regenerator was microfabricated and tested in a Sunpower Frequency-Test-Bed (FTB) Stirling convertor. The team for this effort consisted of Cleveland State University, Gedeon Associates, Sunpower Inc. and International Mezzo Technologies. Testing in the FTB convertor produced about the same efficiency as testing with the original random-fiber regenerator. But the high thermal conductivity of the prototype nickel regenerator was responsible for a significant performance degradation. An efficiency improvement (by a 1.04 factor, according to computer predictions) could have been achieved if the regenerator was made from a low-conductivity …

Design Of A "Figure-8" Spherical Motion Flapping Wing For Miniature Uav's, Zohaib Parvaiz Rehmat May 2009

Design Of A "Figure-8" Spherical Motion Flapping Wing For Miniature Uav's, Zohaib Parvaiz Rehmat

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Hummingbirds and some insects exhibit a Figure-8 motion, which allows them to undergo variety of maneuvers including hovering. It is therefore desirable to have flapping wing miniature air vehicles (FWMAV) that can replicate this unique wing motion. In this research, a design of a flapping wing for FWMAV that can mimic Figure-8 motion using a spherical four bar mechanism is presented. To produce Figure-8 motion, the wing is attached to the coupler point of the spherical four bar mechanism and driven by a DC servo motor. For verification of the design, a prototype of the wing and mechanism is fabricated …

Multiscale Modeling Of Impact On Heterogeneous Viscoelastic Solids With Evolving Microcracks, Flavio V. Souza Apr 2009

Multiscale Modeling Of Impact On Heterogeneous Viscoelastic Solids With Evolving Microcracks, Flavio V. Souza

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Multiscale computational techniques play a major role in solving problems related to viscoelastic composite materials due to the complexities inherent to these materials. In the present work, a numerical procedure for multiscale modeling of impact on heterogeneous viscoelastic solids containing evolving microcracks is proposed in which the (global scale) homogenized viscoelastic incremental constitutive equations have the same form as the local scale viscoelastic incremental constitutive equations, but the homogenized tangent constitutive tensor and the homogenized incremental history dependent stress tensor depend on the amount of damage accumulated at the local scale. Furthermore, the developed technique allows the computation of the …
