Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft play a key role in urban air mobility (UAM), which aims to alleviate traffic congestion in urban areas. Despite their value, eVTOL aircraft suffer from battery energy consumption, which affects their range and endurance in real world flight tasks. Especially, the takeoff process has been identified for excessive power demands. Multidisciplinary analysis and optimization manage to discover optimal takeoff trajectories with minimum energy consumption while balancing multidisciplinary trade-offs, such as short distance takeoff and passengers' comfort. However, conventional parametrization methods (such as B-spline curves) leverage an empirically high-dimensional design space to include real …

Design problems in aerospace engineering often require numerous evaluations of expensive to-evaluate high-fidelity models, resulting in prohibitive computational costs. One way to address the computational cost is through building surrogates, such as deep neural networks (DNNs). However, DNNs may only be an effective surrogate when sufficient evaluations of the high-fidelity model are required such that the up-front training cost is amortized, or in situations that require real-time responses (such as interactive visualizations). Typically, the data requirements for adequately accurate training of DNNs are often impractical for engineering applications. To alleviate this issue, the proposed work utilizes output dimensionality reduction along …
Physics-Constrained Generative Artificial Intelligence For Rapid Takeoff Trajectory Design, Samuel Sisk, Xiaosong Du
Physics-Constrained Generative Artificial Intelligence For Rapid Takeoff Trajectory Design, Samuel Sisk, Xiaosong Du
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The urban air mobility (UAM) industry is rapidly growing to alleviate regional transportation congestion. Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft plays a critical role in this growth due to their efficiency and reduced operating cost. However, excessive energy demands by the takeoff phase impact the practicality of the aircraft. Conventional multidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO) identifies a minimum energy trajectory but can be computationally intensive due to iteratively evaluating high-fidelity simulation models. In addition, complex constraints in practical MDAO pose crucial challenges to the already demanding process. Surrogate models enable efficient design optimization, but complex constraints could prohibit surrogate-based …

Fuel–air mixing remains a critical challenge in the development of high-speed air-breathing propulsion due to the extremely short residence times in supersonic combustors. Experimental studies are essential to investigate the underlying mixing mechanisms, but they require injection systems that can deliver repeatable and controlled flow conditions. In this work, we present the design of a modular strut-type injection platform developed for the Missouri S&T Supersonic Wind Tunnel. In its initial configuration, the platform features a planar trailing-edge slit to generate a two-dimensional jet and includes interchangeable trailing-edge modules to support a wide range of geometries and flow-control strategies. Designed with …

Numerical Investigation Of Wind Disturbance Around A Multirotor Uav In Crosswind And Vertical Flight, Garrison Page
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being increasingly utilized in a wide range of research applications, especially in meteorology. This is due to such factors as their ease of use, maneuverability compared to other forms of data collection, and for rotor- craft, the ability to hover. However, the rotorwash generated by UAVs can introduce significant disturbances, potentially affecting measurement accuracy from sensors. While several studies have investigated the rotorwash of individual UAVs utilizing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), there is limited exploration into how different rotor configurations and external wind conditions influence regions of turbulent flow around …

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Pulsating Flow In Curved Pipes: Insights Into Aortic Dissection In Humans, Gokul Anugrah Gopakumar
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
This dissertation investigates the hemodynamics of pulsating blood flow in curved vessels through direct numerical simulations (DNS), with the overarching aim of uncovering fluid dynamic mechanisms linked to the onset and progression of aortic dissection in humans. The work is structured in two parts: (i) fundamental studies in idealized geometries and (ii) preliminary investigations in patient-specific anatomies. In the first part, curved pipe models representing the aortic arch are used to isolate the effects of pulsation frequency, amplitude ratio, and curvature ratio on transitional and turbulent flow dynamics. The simulations reveal that curvature-driven centrifugal forces shift the peak velocity toward …

Simulation-To-Hardware Validation Of Mpc For Binary Thruster 2d Cubesat Control, Aevar Amundinusarson Oefjoerd
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Small satellites must execute precise, fuel-limited maneuvers under strict actuation and operational constraints. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a suitable approach because it optimizes future actions while explicitly enforcing these limits. This work evaluates (1) whether MPC can operate in real time using binary (on/off), asymmetric thrusters, and (2) whether a high-fidelity digital twin can be used to tune and validate the controller prior to hardware testing.
An MPC framework was implemented on a planar satellite prototype that floats on air bearings, operates at 16.7 Hz (60 ms period), and uses eight binary thrusters exhibiting up to 13.2% variation in …
Damping Modulation Of Dampened Kapton Surfaces, Sebastian Esteban
Damping Modulation Of Dampened Kapton Surfaces, Sebastian Esteban
Honors Undergraduate Theses
When droplets are vibrated or disturbed, they can exhibit a complex sloshing motion, an understudied behavior in drop physics. Droplet sloshing involves a complex combination of transverse and longitudinal motion that changes the droplet's effective weight on the surface the droplet is on. Our current understanding stems from preliminary work focusing on a cantilever beam of fixed thickness and variable viscosity of the liquid being sloshed. This investigation will focus on how variable cantilever thickness and constant viscosity for a liquid being sloshed affects the beam's deflection under consistent vibration. It will also investigate how the natural frequency of a …

Linking Molecular Structure Evolution To Mechanical Degradation During Environmental Aging In Conventional And Recyclable Epoxy Systems, Ben T. Jewell
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The long-term performance of polymeric materials in extreme environments is governed by complex chemical and physical aging processes that alter their molecular structure and mechanical integrity. Conventional thermoset epoxies, while widely used in structural applications, are particularly susceptible to oxidative degradation at elevated temperatures, leading to embrittlement and loss of structural integrity. In the first part of this work, diffusion-limited oxidation (DLO) in a bulk structural epoxy was systematically investigated to establish the link between heterogeneous microstructural evolution and macroscopic mechanical degradation. High-temperature oxidation experiments were conducted in a controlled environmental chamber, and the resulting chemical, thermal, and mechanical changes …

Review: Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Actuators For In-Flight Applications, Sabeel Saleem Mohammed
Anthós
Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is a phenomenon observed when high voltage is passed through a dielectric barrier at high frequencies. Current DBD plasma actuators (PAs) excel at laminar fluid boundary layer control but suffer from limited momentum flux and fluid mechanic inefficiencies. In this article, Mohammed analyzes previous discourse on DBD PAs and offers directions for future research and potential DBD PA applications. Previous work on DBD PAs documented thrust generation at high voltages and frequencies, thrust in varying fluid compositions, and vortex generation. However, certain arrangements hinder flow magnitudes, limiting the use of multiple DBD PAs in close proximity. …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study investigates the aerodynamic effects of a bio-inspired airfoil design based on the microstructure of a secondary feather from a female wood duck. The research hypothesized that incorporating barbs and barbules into an airfoil design would modify boundary layer behavior by introducing localized flow disturbances. To test this, a bio-inspired airfoil was developed by integrating the microstructure into a NACA 0012 airfoil and analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations at angles of attack of 0°, 5°, 10°, and 15°. The results showed that the bio-inspired airfoil influenced boundary layer behavior, producing localized flow disturbances near x/c = 0.7 …

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) are widely used in aerospace, automotive, and other engineering applications due to their lightweight characteristics and superior mechanical properties. Traditional FRCs employ a fixed fiber orientation in each layer, and while different layup sequences can tailor performance, the mechanical properties remain spatially uniform. Tow-steered composites, which enable fibers to follow curvilinear paths, offer the potential for spatially varying stiffness and strength, improving structural performance.
This dissertation addresses key challenges in modeling and designing tow-steered composite structures, including the lack of commercial design tools, the high computational cost of design optimization, and the need to efficiently evaluate manufacturing …

Gas-Generating Reactive Materials: Design, Evaluation And Effect Of Morphology On Their Ignition And Combustion, Purvam Mehulkumar Gandhi
Dissertations
This work investigates optimizing gas-generating reactive materials, focusing on particle morphology's effect on ignition and combustion behavior. Metal-based gas-generating energetic materials (EMs) are promising alternatives to replace traditional CHNO compounds. Design of advanced metal-based EMs requires consistent ways of evaluating how their characteristics affect their ignition and combustion. Many relevant evaluation approaches exist; however, the results may be difficult to compare directly across different studies. Commonly, experimentalists ignite metal-based EMs in enclosed chambers and report pressures, P. However, direct comparison of these pressures is hindered by variations in the chamber volume, V, and the EM mass, m. To standardize the …

Qualitative Analysis Of The Circuits Of Autonomous Inverters With Shut-Off Valves, Shukhrat Badreddinovich Umarov
Technical science and innovation
The article presents the results of a qualitative analysis of circuits of autonomous current and voltage inverters with cut-off valves; the influence of the charge value of the switching capacitor in parallel and series equivalent circuits on the restoration of the switching properties of the thyristors of the inverter power circuit is studied. It is shown that due to the energy periodically accumulated in the inductive elements of the load, the voltage on the switching capacitor in the cut-off state is greater than in a conventional parallel autonomous current inverter. This circumstance ensures an increase in the switching stability of …

A major challenge faced by composite materials is impact, which can result in unexpected damage and degradation. Impact events can cause significant structural damage that may not be immediately visible, leading to a reduction in the material’s mechanical properties and overall performance. This paper presents an impact assessment method using acoustic emission (AE) sensing technology. The primary goal of this approach is to determine the extent of impact damage on composite components by analyzing AE signals produced under operating stress conditions. An advanced algorithm is proposed to predict the probability that the damage falls into various damage categories, providing a …

Citizen science has become a valuable and reliable method for interpreting and processing big datasets, and is vital in the era of ever-growing data volumes. However, there are inherent difficulties in the generating labels from citizen scientists, due to the inherent variability between the members of the crowd, leading to variability in the results. Sometimes, this is useful — such as with serendipitous discoveries, which corresponds to rare/unknown classes in the data — but it might also be due to ambiguity between classes. The primary issue is then to distinguish between the intrinsic variability in the dataset and the uncertainty …

Microstructured Microstructure: Effects Of Concentration Variations On Shock Initiation Of Hmx-Based Plastic Explosives, Dana D. Dlott, Lawrence Salvati, Siva Kumar Valluri
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We studied shock-compressed plastic-bonded explosives (PBX) consisting of HMX (cyclotetramethylene-tetranitramine) with PDMS (poly-dimethylsiloxane) binder, where we varied the HMX weight percent (wt%) up to a maximum of 60 wt%. In this lower-concentration regime, HMX particle clustering causes the PBX structure to consist of HMX clusters and PDMS islands. Structural analysis by optical microscopy allowed us to compute a radial correlation function that gives the mean distance from an average HMX particle to the nearest polymer island. Short-duration 20 GPa shocks (4 ns) created hot spots, and time-resolved thermal emission was used to obtain the growth rate of the subsequent deflagration. …
