An Investigation Of Damage Arrestment Devices On Carbon Fiber Sandwich Specimens Under Dynamic Loading, Gabriel Sabino Sanchez Jun 2012

An Investigation Of Damage Arrestment Devices On Carbon Fiber Sandwich Specimens Under Dynamic Loading, Gabriel Sabino Sanchez

Master's Theses

This research studies the effects of a damage arrestment device embedded between a carbon fiber facesheet and foam core to find whether there is an increase in the structural integrity of the sandwich composites. Experimental and theoretical finite element analyses are implemented for two different composite sandwich geometries; plates and beams. Each structure consisted of the same loading criteria and was restricted to the same vibration fixture during the experiment. An accelerometer was placed on the composite plate to record the amplitude and the natural frequencies of the composite structure. Each composite specimen is then fixed to the surface of …

Analysis And Testing Of Heat Transfer Through Honeycomb Panels, Daniel D. Nguyen

Aerospace Engineering

This project attempts to simulate accurately the thermal conductivity of honeycomb panels in the normal direction. Due to the large empty space of the honeycomb core, the thermal radiation mode of heat transfer was modeled along with conduction. Using Newton’s Method to solve for a steady state model of heat moving through the honeycomb panel, the theoretical effective thermal conduction of the honeycomb panel was found, ranging from 1.03 to 1.07 Q/m/K for a heat input of 2.5 W to 11.8 W. An experimental model was designed to test the theoretical results, using a cold plate and a heat plate …

Design Of Orbital Maneuvers With Aeroassisted Cubesatellites, Stephanie Clark May 2012

Design Of Orbital Maneuvers With Aeroassisted Cubesatellites, Stephanie Clark

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances within the field of cube satellite technology has allowed for the possible development of a maneuver that utilizes a satellite's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and increased atmospheric density to effectively use lift and drag to implement a noncoplanar orbital maneuver. Noncoplanar maneuvers typically require large quantities of propellant due to the large delta-v that is required. However, similar maneuvers using perturbing forces require little or no propellant to create the delta-v required. This research reported here studied on the effects of lift on orbital changes, those of noncoplanar types in particular, for small satellites without orbital maneuvering thrusters. …

This design permits to operate the engine in four different modes: traditional compression ignition (CI), diffusion, Diesel-like (M1); mixed gasoline/Diesel-like (M2); traditional spark ignition (SI), premixed, …

Evaluation Of Turbulence Variable Distributions For Incompressible Fully Rough Pipe Flows, Emilie B. Fowler May 2012

Evaluation Of Turbulence Variable Distributions For Incompressible Fully Rough Pipe Flows, Emilie B. Fowler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The specific turbulent kinetic energy, root-mean-square fluctuating vorticity, and mean-vortexwavelength distributions are presented for fully rough pipe flow. The distributions of these turbulence variables are obtained from a proposed turbulence model. Many of the turbulence models commonly used for computational fluid dynamics are based on an analogy between molecular and turbulent transport. However, traditional k-ε and k-ω models fail to exhibit proper dependence on the molecular viscosity. Based on a rigorous application of the Boussinesq’s hypothesis, Phillips proposed a vorticity-based transport equation for the turbulent kinetic energy. The foundation for this vorticity-based transport equation is presented. In future development of …

Characterization Of Centrifugally-Loaded Flame Migration For Ultra-Compact Combustors, Kenneth D. Lebay

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has designed an Ultra Compact Combustor (UCC) showing viable merit for significantly reducing gas turbine combustor length making it a viable candidate for implementation as an inter-turbine burner and realization of efficiency benefits from the resulting near constant temperature cycle. This concept uses an off-axis combustor cavity and projects approximately 66% length reduction over a conventional combustor. The annular nature of the cavity creates high angular acceleration levels, on the order of 500-3500 g's, resulting in strong centrifugal and buoyant forces. This unique combination works to significantly reduce the required burn time and subsequently …

The purpose of this project is to design and construct a composite structure for an electrically-powered …

Microgas Turbine Engine Characteristics Using Biofuel, Edmond Ing Huang Tan, William W. Liou Feb 2012

Microgas Turbine Engine Characteristics Using Biofuel, Edmond Ing Huang Tan, William W. Liou

The Hilltop Review

Aviation fuels commonly used today are extracted from the kerosene fraction of the crude oil that is distilled between the gasoline and the diesel. Crude oil is not renewable and the world oil reserve is generally believed to be on the decline. In 2006, 6.3% of the world's refinery production was used for aviation fuel (Nygren et. al., 2009). At an estimated rate of 3% increase of fuel demand per year, aviation use alone will consume the world fuel production by 2026. Therefore, there is a need for the aviation industry to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and, perhaps, …

Direct numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the effect of turbulence-radiation interaction in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers, representative of the Orion crew exploration vehicle at the peak heating condition during reentry. Both the effects of emission and absorption are considered by solving the radiative transfer equation using the tangent slab approximation and a spectral model with line-by-line accuracy. Nondimensional governing parameters to measure the significance of turbulence-radiation interaction are proposed, and the direct numerical simulation fields with and without radiation coupling are used to assess turbulence-radiation interaction. Is it found that the fluid medium within the boundary layer is optically …

Encyclopedia Of Mathematics And Society: 'Engineering Design', Kimberly Edginton Bigelow Jan 2012

Encyclopedia Of Mathematics And Society: 'Engineering Design', Kimberly Edginton Bigelow

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Engineers design everything from automobiles and bridges to prosthetic limbs and sporting equipment. Designing is different from simply building in that it requires the adherence to a very systematic, yet iterative, process known as the “engineering design process.” This process is to engineers what the scientific method is to scientists-guiding steps that help ensure that the end result is the best it can be. When a new product is created without following the steps of the engineering design process, there is a higher likelihood that the product designed will lack some important aspect: the end product may not appropriately account …

Cfd Study On Aerodynamic Effects Of A Rear Wing/Spoiler On A Passenger Vehicle, Mustafa Cakir Jan 2012

Cfd Study On Aerodynamic Effects Of A Rear Wing/Spoiler On A Passenger Vehicle, Mustafa Cakir

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

Aerodynamic characteristics of a racing car are of significant interest in reducing car-racing accidents due to wind loading and in reducing the fuel consumption. At the present, modified car racing becomes more popular around the world. Sports cars are most commonly seen with spoilers, such as Ford Mustang, Subaru Impreza, and Chevrolet Corvette. Even though these vehicles typically have a more rigid chassis and a stiffer suspension to aid in high-speed maneuverability, a spoiler can still be beneficial. One of the design goals of a spoiler is to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency. Many vehicles have a fairly steep …

Passive Wireless Antenna Sensors For Crack Detection And Shear/Compression Sensing, Irshad Mohammad Jan 2012

Passive Wireless Antenna Sensors For Crack Detection And Shear/Compression Sensing, Irshad Mohammad

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Despite the fact that engineering components and structures are carefully designed against fatigue failures, 50 to 90% of mechanical failures are due to fatigue crack formation. The severity of the failure depends on both the crack length and its orientation with respect to the loading direction. Many types of sensors are available that can detect fatigue crack propagation. But, crack orientation detection has been rarely reported in the literature. We evaluated a patch antenna sensor capable of detecting crack propagation as well as crack orientation changes. The aim of the sensors would be to evaluate the real-time health condition of …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Mass Transfer In Microreactors, Wei-Tsen Han Jan 2012

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Mass Transfer In Microreactors, Wei-Tsen Han

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In this work, two types of microreactors for reactions have been studied, which were involving multiple fluid phases: liquid-liquid (immiscible liquids) phase and gas-liquid phase. Investigation of mass transfer within reacting flows in microreactors has been carried out in these two multiphase systems. For the liquid-liquid phase, a microfluidic system was designed and fabricated to generate a slug flow pattern of immiscible liquids. This system was used to demonstrate the effect of the flow pattern on mass transfer and the effect on chemical reaction rate for a simple acid-base reaction. The reaction progression was tracked by measuring the pH along …

Experimental Identification Of Force Coefficients Of Hybrid Air Foil Bearings, Yu Ping Wang Jan 2012

Experimental Identification Of Force Coefficients Of Hybrid Air Foil Bearings, Yu Ping Wang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Successful applications for air foil bearings in small to midsize turbo-machinery have been acknowledged. Air foil bearings do not require oil lubricant thus they are capable of operating under much higher temperature than oil-lubricated bearings and they entail less maintenance costs if well-designed. However, when rotor size increases beyond 100 mm in diameter, reliability becomes an issue due to comparable increase in rotor weight with respect to increase in load capacity of the bearing. Furthermore, dry rubbing during starts and stops also causes concerns due to typical slow acceleration and deceleration characteristics of large turbo-machinery. The concept of hybrid air …

Experimental Feasibility Study Of Radial Injection Cooling Of Three-Pad Radial Air Foil Bearings, Suman K. Shrestha Jan 2012

Experimental Feasibility Study Of Radial Injection Cooling Of Three-Pad Radial Air Foil Bearings, Suman K. Shrestha

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Air foil bearings use ambient air as a lubricant allowing environment-friendly operation. When they are designed, installed, and operated properly, air foil bearings are very cost effective and reliable solution to oil-free turbomachinery. Because air is used as a lubricant, there are no mechanical contacts between the rotor and bearings and when the rotor is lifted off the bearing, near frictionless quiet operation is possible. However, due to the high speed operation, thermal management is one of the very important design factors to consider. Most widely accepted practice of the cooling method is axial cooling, which uses cooling air passing …

Thermal Behavior Of Dielectric Materials During Rapid Heating, Daipayan Sarkar

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The objective of this research is to understand the temperature variation in dielectric materials of different geometry. The work is divided into three major segments. The Thermal Wave model has been taken into consideration as the classical Fourier law of heat conduction breaks down when a dielectric material of sub-micron geometry is heated rapidly. The first partof the work discusses primarily about the temperature distribution in a semi-infinite dielectric material, followed by the temperature profile in a finite body (plate) and finally mathematical formulation is presented for a two-layered body. The thermal wave equation is used because in dielectric materials …
