Composite Recycler: Delamination, Nathan Sauer Jan 2019

Composite Recycler: Delamination, Nathan Sauer

All Undergraduate Projects

A great deal of composite waste is generated in the construction of wings for the Boeing 777. These carbon fiber “wing trimmings” are currently being disposed of in a landfill. These carbon fiber boards are made of several layers laminated together, making them very rigid and hard to recycle. This report proposes a method to delaminate the layers of these composite wing trimmings using a hydraulic press and a V-shaped steel die so that they may be more easily shredded and thus recycled. A top, “male” die with two points is pressed into a bottom, “female” die with three points …

From Statistical Correlations To Stochasticity And Size Effects In Sub-Micron Crystal Plasticity, Hengxu Song, Stefanos Papanikolaou Jan 2019

From Statistical Correlations To Stochasticity And Size Effects In Sub-Micron Crystal Plasticity, Hengxu Song, Stefanos Papanikolaou

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Metals in small volumes display a strong dependence on initial conditions, which translates into size effects and stochastic mechanical responses. In the context of crystal plasticity, this amounts to the role of pre-existing dislocation configurations that may emerge due to prior processing. Here, we study a minimal but realistic model of uniaxial compression of sub-micron finite volumes. We show how the statistical correlations of pre-existing dislocation configurations may influence the mechanical response in multi-slip crystal plasticity, in connection to the finite volume size and the initial dislocation density. In addition, spatial dislocation correlations display evidence that plasticity is strongly influenced …

Atomistic Simulations Of Nanoindentation Response Of Irradiation Defects In Iron, M. Mustafa Azeem, Qingyu Wang, Muhammad Zubair Jan 2019

Atomistic Simulations Of Nanoindentation Response Of Irradiation Defects In Iron, M. Mustafa Azeem, Qingyu Wang, Muhammad Zubair

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Radiation response of a material is a consequence of defects' evolution in any radiation damage event. The radiation-induced defects can significantly alter the mechanical properties of a material. Radiation damage initiates from incident neutron by bombardment on solid material causing production and evolution of Frenkel defects. Since voids are formed due to aggregation of a large number of vacancies that cause dimensional changes and hence irradiation-induced swelling. In order to characterize the effect of irradiation defects, we have performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate nanoindentation response of point defects and voids in Fe and their effects on mechanical parameters. …

Electric Solid Propellant Ablation In An Arc Discharge, Matthew S. Glascock, Joshua L. Rovey, Kurt A. Polzin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electric solid propellants are advanced solid chemical rocket propellants that can be controlled (ignited, throttled, and extinguished) through the application and removal of an electric current. Electric solid propellants are also being considered for pulsed arc ablation electric thrusters, such as the pulsed plasma thruster. The focus of this work is the electrical and ablation characteristics of electric solid propellant within an arc discharge. Arc discharges of 5–20 J per pulse were created within a cylindrical cavity, and results for the electric solid propellant are compared with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is a traditional propellant in ablative pulsed plasma thrusters. The …

Experimental Investigation Of Mixtures Of 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Ethyl Sulfate And Ethylammonium Nitrate With Electrospray Propulsion Applications, Mitchell J. Wainwright, Joshua L. Rovey, Shawn W. Miller, Benjamin D. Prince

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Physical properties, performance metrics, and mass spectra of mixtures of two ionic liquids (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl-sulfate aka [Emim][EtSO4] and ethyl ammonium nitrate aka EAN) are investigated from the standpoint of electrospray propulsive characteristics. Spectra suggest that as the [Emim][EtSO4] mixture fraction increases, the intensity of [Emim][EtSO4] related species in the plume also increases, while the presence of EAN decreases. Spectra also show presence of both EAN proton transfer species and species related to chemical reaction of [EtSO4] and water. Despite the volatility of EAN, it emits stably into vacuum at low flow rates when mixed with 25% [Emim][EtSO4]. Spectra also show …

Hydroxylammonium Nitrate Species In A Monopropellant Electrospray Plume, Mitchell J. Wainwright, Joshua L. Rovey, Shawn W. Miller, Benjamin D. Prince, Steven P. Berg

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate ([Emim][EtSO4]) and hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN) is an energetic monopropellant potentially suitable in a multi-mode chemical-electric microtube-electrospray micro propulsion system. In this work, electrospray plume mass spectra are compared between the monopropellant mixture and neat [Emim][EtSO4]. This comparison clearly indicates new and additional species present in the plume due to the addition of HAN. Mass spectra from 20-600 amu/q were obtained over a variety of angles and flow rates from 2 pL/sec to 3 nL/sec in both cation and anion extraction modes. Mass spectrum dependence on flow rate and angular orientation agree qualitatively well with …

Enhanced Surface Integrity With Thermally Stable Residual Stress Fields And Nanostructures In Cryogenic Processing Of Titanium Alloy Ti-6al-4v, James R. Caudill

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Burnishing is a chipless finishing process used to improve surface integrity by severe plastic deformation (SPD) of surface asperities. As surface integrity in large measure defines the functional performance and fatigue life of aerospace alloys, burnishing is thus a means of increasing the fatigue life of critical components, such as turbine and compressor blades in gas turbine engines. Therefore, the primary objective of this dissertation is to characterize the burnishing-induced surface integrity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy in terms of the implemented processing parameters. As the impact of cooling mechanisms on surface integrity from SPD processing is largely unexplored, a particular emphasis …

Abstract

This paper analyses the results of the computational analysis between a single planar and a wrap-around fin mounted on a semi-cylindrical body. A free-stream Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was simulated for both cases in the Mach 0.4-3.0M range at 0°Angle of attack, in which, the behavior of flow around the fin was investigated using a turbulence model of higher order discretization. The post-processing shows all the possible views of the flow dynamics around the fins, as well as the missile body. The aerodynamic drag and the rolling moment characteristics of the planar and the wrap-around fin have been …

Simulations On Optimization Of Liquid Spray Burners & Operating Parameters, Pallavi Gajjar, Vinayak Malhotra

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Spray burners form an essential part of any liquid propulsion system as they are responsible for injecting, atomizing, mixing and combusting the liquid fuel. Spray combustion used in aerospace applications like the liquid rocket engines, gas turbines or any other controlled environment for that matter places a huge emphasis on safe and effective operations. These applications make use of relatively small amounts of propellant volumes to generate enormous amounts of energy through combustion for producing thrust. For such cases involving enormous energy interactions, combustion comes with its own set of challenges. The predominant challenge among them all is that of …

Gnss/Lidar-Based Navigation Of An Aerial Robot In Sparse Forests, Antonio C. Chiella, Henrique N. Machado, Bruno O.S. Teixeira, Guilherme A.S. Pereira

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Autonomous navigation of unmanned vehicles in forests is a challenging task. In such environments, due to the canopies of the trees, information from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be degraded or even unavailable. Also, because of the large number of obstacles, a previous detailed map of the environment is not practical. In this paper, we solve the complete navigation problem of an aerial robot in a sparse forest, where there is enough space for the flight and the GNSS signals can be sporadically detected. For localization, we propose a state estimator that merges information from GNSS, Attitude and Heading …

Electric solid propellants are advanced solid chemical rocket propellants controlled by electric current. Electric solid propellants may also be used in an electric propulsion system, specifically, an ablative pulsed plasma thruster. Previous experiments with the electric solid propellant HIPEP suggest its ablation processes are similar to traditional propellant polytetrafluoroethylene (C2F4). Better understanding of the ablation and resulting propulsion performance of HIPEP requires a model of its vapor composition and transport properties. This paper reports on the development of such a model. The model was validated by comparing results for C2F4 with literature, which showed agreement with multiple models described. Transport …

Interlaminar Damage Detection In Composite Materials, Hariharan Rangarajan Jan 2019

Interlaminar Damage Detection In Composite Materials, Hariharan Rangarajan

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Using ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for high-temperature applications in jet engines increases durability and reduces weight and cooling requirements resulting in improved efficiency and fuel savings. Understanding, detecting, and monitoring different types of damage is essential to achieve optimal performance of CMC components. The Direct Current Potential Drop (DCPD) method is a non-destructive technique of estimating damage in composite materials.

DCPD technique works by measuring nodal potential differences when current is flown through the material. Direct current spreading in different woven and laminate composites is modeled to follow a ladder resistor network in which the nodal voltages decrease exponentially as …

Bayesian Model Averaging Based Storage Lifetime Assessment Method For Rubber Sealing Rings, Di Liu, Shaoping Wang, Chao Zhang, Mileta M. Tomovic

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Rubber sealing ring is one of the most widely used seals. It is always stored for a period of time before put into use, especially in aeronautic and aerospace applications. It is necessary to evaluate the storage lifetime of rubber sealing rings. However, due to the long storage lifetime of rubber sealing rings, two issues need to be handled, including model uncertainty and lack of storage lifetime data. A Bayesian model averaging based storage lifetime assessment method for rubber sealing rings is proposed in this article. The Gamma distribution model and Weibull distribution model are selected as the candidate models …
