Structural, Magnetic And Microstructural Studies Of Composition-Modified Sm–Co Ribbons, Xiujuan Jiang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

There is an increasing interest in developing desirable microstructures in hard magnetic materials. Sm-Co-based magnets, bearing superior intrinsic magnetic properties, are good candidates for further development. Two Sm-Co-based alloys, (Sm12Co88)100-x-yCryCx (taking SmCo7 phase) and SmCo4-xFexB (a derivative of SmCo5 phase), were produced using melt-spinning technique. The magnetic properties are correlated to the structural and microstructural properties.

Within the SmCo7 stoichiometry, cumulative effects of Cr and C additions on the structural and magnetic properties have been investigated. Experimental results have shown that these additions along …

A predictive model, based on a Cellular Automaton (CA) - Finite Element (FE) method, has been developed to simulate microstructure evolution during metal solidification for a laser based additive manufacturing process. The macroscopic FE calculation was designed to update the temperature field and simulate a high cooling rate. In the microscopic CA model, heterogeneous nucleation sites, preferential growth orientation and dendritic grain growth kinetics were simulated. The CA model was able to show the entrapment of neighboring cells and the relationship between undercooling and the grain growth rate. The model predicted the dendritic grain size, structure, and morphological evolution during …

Effect Of Zinc Galvanization On The Microstructure And Fracture Behavior Of Low And Medium Carbon Structural Steels, Ignatius C. Okafor, Ronald J. O'Malley, Kaushal R. Prayakarao, Heshmat A. Aglan Aug 2013

Effect Of Zinc Galvanization On The Microstructure And Fracture Behavior Of Low And Medium Carbon Structural Steels, Ignatius C. Okafor, Ronald J. O'Malley, Kaushal R. Prayakarao, Heshmat A. Aglan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microstructure and fracture behavior of ASTM 572 Grade 65 steels used for wind tower applications have been studied. Steels of two carbon level chemistries designed for this grade were used in the study. Fracture toughness of the steels was studied using 3-point bend test on samples coated with zinc and not coated with zinc. Lower carbon steel showed higher resistance to fracture than medium carbon steel after zinc galvanization. SEM study suggests that zinc and zinc bath additives that migrated to crack tips are responsible for the loss in ductility. The phenomenon of Liquid Metal Embrittlement (LME) is suggested to …

Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of A Friction Stir Processed Ti-6al-4v Alloy, Jianqing Su, Jiye Wang, Rajiv S. Mishra, Ray Xu, John A. Baumann

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Friction stir processing (FSP) trials were performed on 2mm-thick Ti-6Al-4V sheets using various processing parameters including tool rotational speed (800-1000RPM) and tool traverse speed (1-4IPM). A processing window was established with the W-1% La2O3 tool to produce defect-free friction stir processed (FSP'd) materials. The stir zone (SZ) material of the FSP'd samples showed a fully Β transformed microstructure characterized by typical basket-weave lamellar α/Β structure. The prior Β grains in the SZs contained multiple α variants, and the average sizes ranged from 12μm to 38μm influenced by the processing parameters. Based on metallurgical evaluation, the microstructural evolution …

Microstructure Selection Of Sm–Co–Al Alloys To Increase Magnetization, Brian Dick Apr 2012

Microstructure Selection Of Sm–Co–Al Alloys To Increase Magnetization, Brian Dick

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

An ever increasing demand for higher performing magnets drives the need for new and innovative methods to achieve this goal. Sm-Co rare earth permanent magnets have a unique eutectic microstructure that, through refinement, could become a two-phase magnet which would significantly increase their energy product. The eutectic structure of Sm8Co92 is comprised of αCo rods embedded within a Sm2Co17 matrix. If the rods are small enough to encourage exchange coupling and the matrix is smaller than the single domain limit, then an efficient two-phase magnet is created.

Refining the Co rods and matrix size …

Effect Of Process Parameters On Abnormal Grain Growth During Friction Stir Processing Of A Cast Al Alloy, S. Jana, Rajiv S. Mishra, J. A. Baumann, G. Grant Nov 2010

Effect Of Process Parameters On Abnormal Grain Growth During Friction Stir Processing Of A Cast Al Alloy, S. Jana, Rajiv S. Mishra, J. A. Baumann, G. Grant

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of process parameters and friction stir processing (FSP) run configurations on the stability of nugget microstructure at elevated temperatures were evaluated. Cast plates of an Al-7Si-0.6Mg alloy were friction stir processed using a combination of tool rotation rates and tool traverse speeds. All single pass runs showed some extent of abnormal grain growth (AGG), whereas multi-pass runs were more resistant to AGG. Additionally, higher tool rotation rate was found to be beneficial for controlling AGG. These effects were analyzed by comparing the result of this work with other published results and AGG models. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Effect Of Friction Stir Processing On Fatigue Behavior Of An Investment Cast Al-7si-0.6 Mg Alloy, S. Jana, Rajiv S. Mishra, J. B. Baumann, G. Grant Feb 2010

Effect Of Friction Stir Processing On Fatigue Behavior Of An Investment Cast Al-7si-0.6 Mg Alloy, S. Jana, Rajiv S. Mishra, J. B. Baumann, G. Grant

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cast aluminum alloys in general show poor fatigue performance due to the presence of defects. Friction stir processing (FSP) can be used as a tool to enhance the mechanical properties of cast alloys by eliminating such defects. in the present study FSP led to a five times improvement in fatigue life of an investment cast Al-7Si-0.6 Mg hypoeutectic alloy. the reason for such an enhancement was linked to the closure of casting porosities, which acted as crack nucleation sites in the as cast condition. Porosities acted as notches in the as cast alloy and led to an order of magnitude …

Effect Of Stress Ratio On The Fatigue Behavior Of A Friction Stir Processed Cast Al-Si-Mg Alloy, S. Jana, Rajiv S. Mishra, J. B. Baumann, G. Grant

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of friction stirs processing (FSP) on the fatigue life of a cast Al-7Si-0.6 Mg alloy at stress ratios of R = 0 and R = -1 was evaluated. Two types of specimen geometry were used for the FSPed condition, through thickness processed and partial thickness processed. at R = 0, the microstructural refinement enhanced the fatigue life by a factor of 15, whereas at R = -1 the improvement in fatigue life was 5-fold. in light of these observations, various closure mechanisms were examined. © 2009 Acta Materialia Inc.

Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (LAMP) can be applied to repair steel die/molds which are currently repaired using traditional welding process in industry. In order to fully understand the advantages of laser deposition repair process over traditional welded-repair process, the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and hardness of H13 tool steel samples produced by these two processes were investigated. The microstructure and fracture surface of the samples were analyzed using optical microscope and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). Moreover, depositions on substrates with different shapes were studied to evaluate the performance of LAMP on damaged parts with complicated geometric shape.

Investigation Of The Platinum-Rich Portion Of The Platinum-Tantalum Phase Diagram, Bob Dean Browning Aug 1961

Investigation Of The Platinum-Rich Portion Of The Platinum-Tantalum Phase Diagram, Bob Dean Browning

Theses and Dissertations

The Pt-Ta binary system was investigated at two isotherms;1000°C and 1500°C, and at eleven alloy compositions in the range of 50 to 100 atomic percent platinum. The alloys were examined by x-ray diffraction and metallography. Three intermetallic compounds, Pt2Ta, Pt3Ta, and Pt4Ta were found to exist in this composition range. The Pt4Ta intermetallic appeared only at the 1500°C isotherm. Platinum dissolved tantalum substitutionally to 90 atomic percent at 1500 °C and to approximately 80 atomic percent at 1000 °C.
