Exploring Metal Additive Manufacturing In Martian Atmospheric Environments, Zane Mebruer May 2025

Exploring Metal Additive Manufacturing In Martian Atmospheric Environments, Zane Mebruer

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

On-surface manufacturing is key to the success of a planetary colonization, especially that of Mars. However, traditional subtractive manufacturing processes are equipment, energy, and material intensive, meaning novel additive manufacturing (AM) processes must be pursued for this end. Selective laser melting, one of the most effective and versatile AM methods, would be incredibly beneficial to a Martian mission but requires an artificial argon atmosphere to create effective parts. The purpose of this study was to examine if carbon dioxide, the gas that makes up over 95% of Mars’ surface atmosphere, would be a sufficient substitute for argon in SLM fabrication. …

Settingsorder Article Reprints Open Accessarticle A Model To Account For The Effects Of Load Ratio And Hydrogen Pressure On The Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior Of Pressure Vessel Steels, Ashok Saxena, Kip O. Findley

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A phenomenological model for estimating the effects of load ratio R and hydrogen pressure PH2 on the hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack growth rate (HA-FCGR) behavior in the transient and steady-state regimes of pressure vessel steels is described. The "transient regime" is identified with crack growth within a severely embrittled zone of intense plasticity at the crack tip. The "steady-state" behavior is associated with the crack growing into a region of comparatively lower hydrogen concentration located further away from the crack tip. The model treats the effects of R and PH2 as being functionally separable. In the transient …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Intelligent materials discovery and design plays a pivotal role in advancement of spintronics, optoelectronics and thermoelectric devices and technology. In this study, we investigate three types of materials using first principles calculations. First, the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of CrTiCoZ (Z = Al, Si) equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloys were investigated. CrTiCoAl compound was found to exhibit a half metallic ferromagnetic structure and Curie temperature above room temperature, which makes it an ideal candidate for magnetic tunnel junction, the basic building block of Spintronic devices. Second, we use Green’s function to obtain the finite temperature phonons by including quartic anharmonicity …

Development Of Iii-V And Iv Epitaxy On Sapphire Technology, Emmanuel Wangila

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research presents comprehensive insights into the epitaxial growth of germanium (Ge) on c-plane sapphire substrates using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The direct growth of Ge on sapphire typically yields three-dimensional (3D) Ge islands with diverse growth directions, multiple primary domains, and twinned crystals. However, incorporating a thin AlAs nucleation layer proves instrumental in enhancing surface and material quality. With a 10 nm AlAs layer, the achieved surface exhibits improved characteristics, including a smoother surface, single epitaxial orientation, sharper rocking curve, and a single domain. This study surpasses previous works by achieving a single primary domain and reducing twinning. Furthermore, …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The light-based nanowelding of metallic nanoparticles is of particular interest because it provides convenient and controlled means for the conversion of nanoparticles into microstructures and the fabrication of nanodevices. In this study, we investigated the wavelength dependence of laser-induced nanowelded shapes of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). We observed that the nanowelded microstructures illuminated with only a 405 nm laser were more branched than those formed via illumination using both the 405 nm and 532 nm lasers. We quantified this observation by two compactness descriptors and examined the dependence of the power of the 532 nm laser. More importantly, to understand the …

Direct band gap GeSn alloys have recently emerged as promising lasing source materials for monolithic integration on Si substrate. In this work, optically pumped mid-infrared GeSn lasers were studied with the observation of dual-wavelength lasing at 2187 nm and 2460 nm. Two simultaneous lasing regions include a GeSn buffer layer (bulk) and a SiGeSn/GeSn multiple quantum well structure that were grown seamlessly using a chemical vapor deposition reactor. The onset of dual lasing occurs at 420 kW/cm2. The wider bandgap SiGeSn partitioning barrier enables the independent operation of two gain regions. While the better performance device in terms …

A Study On Interactions Between Metal-Organic Frameworks And Biological Materials, Josh Phipps Dec 2022

A Study On Interactions Between Metal-Organic Frameworks And Biological Materials, Josh Phipps

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Metal-organic frameworks or MOFs are an extremely useful tool in many areas of applications. Their popularity in recent years has arisen from their high efficiency in catalytic chemical reactions. This is made possible due to their porous interior and the ability of the MOFs components to be functionalized. These same traits make MOFs excellent for use in protein encapsulation or immobilization and have the potential to become excellent drug carriers. Their development in this utilization has been limited dramatically compared to MOFs chemical applications. This is due in part to the nature of biological processes taking longer to study, but …

This study investigates the mechanical behavior of additively manufactured (AM) 17-4 PH (AISI 630) stainless steels and compares their behavior to traditionally produced wrought counterparts. The goal of this study is to understand the key parameters influencing AM 17-4 PH steel fatigue life under ULCF conditions and to develop simple predictive models for fatigue-life estimation in AM 17-4 steel components. In this study, both AM and traditionally produced (wrought) material samples are fatigue tested under fully reversed (R = −1) strain controlled (2–4% strain) loading and characterized using micro-hardness, x-ray diffraction, and fractography methods. Results indicate decreased fatigue life for …

Electrochemical Deposition In Energy Storage Devices, Witness Atutala Martin Jul 2021

Electrochemical Deposition In Energy Storage Devices, Witness Atutala Martin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Metals, whether in a solid or soluble ion form, are a vital part of any electrochemical storage system. More so, Li metal is widely considered as the ideal anode because of its low density and low electrochemical potential (-3.04 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode – SHE). However, just like most metals, it does not plate or strip evenly during cycling which can lead to cycling performance issues, short cycling lifespans, and even safety concerns brought about by dendrites that can cause internal short-circuiting within cells. This research focused on investigating the electroplating of metals in both aqueous and non-aqueous …

A Computational Study Of Radiation Damage In Bilayer Silicon-Gold Structures, Cameron Hopper Jul 2021

A Computational Study Of Radiation Damage In Bilayer Silicon-Gold Structures, Cameron Hopper

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Irradiation from sources such as nuclear reactors bombard materials with neutrons and heavy ions. The primary consequence of this irradiation is the displacement of atoms from their atomic structure. As the structure becomes damaged, the mechanical properties can change. Eventually, this can result in a failure due to embrittlement. This type of damage is hard to detect and can result in sudden, unexpected failure. Therefore, focusing on managing the consequences of irradiation has been a heavily researched topic. To manage irradiation, the focus is primarily to manage the voids and interstitials that appear during irradiation. Grain boundaries and amorphous regions …

Morphology (core shell and alloy) and metal molar ratio (Ni2Fe10, Ni5Fe10, and Ni10Fe10) were tested as key nanoparticle properties. The shelf life of the nanoparticles was tested over a 3-week period, and the effect of initial nanoparticle concentration on dye removal was evaluated. The highest initial nanoparticle concentration (1000 mg/L) showed consistent Orange G removal and the greatest extent of dye removal, as compared to the other tested concentrations (i.e., 750 mg/L, 500 mg/L, and 250 mg/L) for the …

Optimization Of The Practice Of Slow Cooling Steel Bars: A Redesign And Modernization Of Materials, Eryn Johnston Dec 2018

Optimization Of The Practice Of Slow Cooling Steel Bars: A Redesign And Modernization Of Materials, Eryn Johnston

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Throughout the process of steel making, certain grades of steel are a higher risk for defects caused by the inability to quickly diffuse hydrogen through the steel when cooled to room temperature at a normal rate based on the ambient air temperature. To reduce the hydrogen flaking defects that are caused due to hydrogen entrapment in the steel, the process of slow cooling is utilized. This process reduces the cooling rate of steel bars by keeping them at a higher temperature for extended periods and in turn gives the hydrogen a chance to fully dissipate from the steel. In many …

The results of this work show that adding graphene powder improved the performance of LiCoO¬2 as a cathode material. With the incorporation of different weight percentages of graphene powder, the LiBs showed distinct changes in their charging …

Self-Assembled Barium Titanate Nanoscale Films By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Timothy Allen Morgan May 2018

Self-Assembled Barium Titanate Nanoscale Films By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Timothy Allen Morgan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One challenge of investigating ferroelectrics at the nanoscale has been controlling the stoichiometry during growth. Historically, the growth of barium titanate (BaTiO3) by molecular beam epitaxy has relied on a growth technique called shuttered RHEED. Shuttered RHEED controls the stoichiometry of barium titanate through the precise deposition of alternating layers of BaO and TiO2. While this approach has achieved 1% control of stoichiometry, finding self-limiting mechanisms to lock-in stoichiometry has been the focus of the growth community. The Goldschmidt tolerance factor predicts an unstable perovskite when barium sits in the titanium lattice site. The BaO-TiO2 phase diagram predicts a low-solubility …

Dynamical Properties Of Ferroelectric Perovskites (Ba,Sr)Tio3 And Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 Systems From First Principles, Jeevaka Weerasinghe

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A first-principles-based effective Hamiltonian scheme which incorporates coupling between ferroelectric (FE) and antiferrodistortive (AFD) motions is applied to Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 alloys. It validates the existence of two modes of E symmetry (rather than the single E(1TO) soft mode) in the 50-75 cm-1 range for temperatures smaller than 200 K and for compositions falling within the Rhombohedral R3c phase. Coupling between long-range-ordered FE and AFD motions is shown to be the cause of the additional mode and more insight into its nature is provided. This scheme is further used to reveal a field-induced anticrossing involving FE and AFD degrees of …
