Topological insulators, a new quantum state of matter, create exciting opportunities for studying topological quantum physics and for exploring spintronic applications due to their gapless helical metallic surface states. Here, we report the observation of weak anti-localization and quantum oscillations originated from surface states in Bi2Se2Te crystals. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on cleaved Bi2Se2Te crystals show a well-defined linear dispersion without intersection of the conduction band. The measured weak anti-localization effect agrees well with the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka model and the extracted phase coherent length shows a power-law dependence with temperature ( ∼T−0.44), indicating the presence of the surface states. …

A Simplified Approach For Negative Skin Friction Calculation Of Special-Shaped Pile Considering Pile-Soil Interaction Under Surcharge, Gang-Qiang Kong, Hang Zhou, Han-Long Liu, Xuan-Ming Ding, Robert Liang
Robert Y. Liang
A simplified approach was proposed to analyze the negative skin friction calculation of special-shaped pile considering pile-soil interaction under surcharge. Based on the concentric cylinder shearing theory, considering the changes of pile shape (such as, taper angle and diameters of pile base, etc.), the load-transfer of special-shaped pile was built. The accuracy of the developed simplified approach was verified by numerical simulation model with the same condition. Then, the influence factors, such as, taper angles, the diameter of pile base, surcharge, and pile-soil interface parameters were analyzed and discussed. The results show that the developed simplified approach can calculate NSF …

A Case Study Of Heat Treatment On Aisi 1020 Steel, Sayed Shafayat Hossain, Md. Maksudul Islam, Md. Sajibul Alam Bhuyan
Md. Maksudul Islam
Proper heat treatment of steels is one of the most important factors in determining how they will perform in service. Engineering materials, mostly steel, are heat treated under controlled sequence of heating and cooling to alter their physical and mechanical properties to meet desired engineering applications. In this study we have chosen AISI 1020 steel as for our research work and we have tried to find out the mechanical properties (hardness) and micro structural properties (martensite formation, carbon self-locking region) by means of appropriate heat treatment process (annealing, normalizing & hardening). Here the steel specimens were heat treated in a …

Professor David Lynch
Reflectance difference (RD) spectra for the a–b plane of the single crystals of Gd5Si2Ge2and b–c planes of Gd5Si2Ge2 and Tb5Si2.2Ge1.8 were obtained in the photon energy range of 1.5–5.5 eV. Several peaks were observed for these crystals in the measured spectrum range. Similar features were observed in the RD spectra for the b–c planes ofGd5Si2Ge2 and Tb5Si2.2Ge1.8, while different features were observed for the a–b plane and b–c plane of Gd5Si2Ge2. The RD spectra for the crystals arise not only from the surface anisotropy but also from the bulk anisotropy due to the monoclinic structure of the bulk crystal.

Strain-Driven Transition From E-Type To A-Type Magnetic Order In Ymno₃ Epitaxial Films, F. Jiménez-Villacorta, J. A. Gallastegui, I. Fina, X. Marti, J. Fontcuberta

Single-crystal (100)-oriented YMnO3 thin films grown on (110)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates have been studied by polarized extended x-ray absorption fine structure to determine the Mn-O bond lengths. Using a simple geometrical model and previously reported x-ray diffraction data on the same samples, the Mn-O-Mn bonding angles are calculated. We show that the epitaxy-induced in-plane anisotropic strain has a dramatic impact on the bonding angles, allowing the rationalization of the reported existence of cycloidal magnetic order and concomitant ferroelectricity in moderately strained films and the gradual suppression by larger strains. We shall argue that epitaxial strain allows shifting YMnO3 from an E-type …

Hfco7-Based Rare-Earth-Free Permanent-Magnet Alloys, Bhaskar Das
B. Das
This study presents the structural and magnetic properties of melt-spun HfCo7,HfCo7-xFex (0.25 ≤ × ≤ 1) and HfCo7Six(0.2 ≤ × ≤1.2) alloys. Appreciable permanent-magnet properties with a magnetocrystalline anisotropy of about 9.6-16.5 Mergs/cm3, a magnetic polarization Js ≈ 7.2-10.6 kG, and coercivities Hc = 0.5-3.0 kOe were obtained by varying the composition of these alloys. Structural analysis reveals that the positions of x-ray diffraction peaks of HfCo7 show good agreement with those corresponding to an orthorhombic structure having lattice parameters of about α = 4.719 Å, b = 4.278 Å, and c = 8.070 Å. Based on these results, a …

Kinetics Of Spinel Formation And Growth During Dissolution Of Mgo In Cao-Al2o3-Sio2 Slag, Sharon Nightingale, B. J. Monaghan
Brian Monaghan
The formation and growth of MgAl2O4 spinel crystals on a single crystal MgO substrate submerged in a 40% CaO, 40% SiO2 and 20% Al2O3 slag was directly observed using high temperature microscopy. This showed that the crystals initially form on the MgO surface, but may break off and be carried out into the liquid slag. Still pictures extracted from digitally recorded images were used to measure the size of these crystals at 1420, 1440 and 1460oC as a function of time. Growth of the crystals was found to follow the parabolic rate law, with rates increasing with temperature. An estimate …

Determination Of The Thermal Histories Of Coke In A Blast Furnace Through X-Ray Analysis, B. J. Monaghan, Robert J. Nightingale, V. Daly, E. Fitzpatrick
Brian Monaghan
A study has been undertaken to identify the source of coke fines sampled from the deadman area of the blast furnace. Using measurements of the coke crystallite dimension LC, it was established that some of the fines found in the deadman area of a blast furnace were not simply the degradation products of the lump coke in this area. The LC was measured using standard X-ray analysis techniques. The coke fines had a higher LC than the coke lump and therefore have experienced a higher maximum temperature than the associated coke lump. This finding has been interpreted as at least …
Formation Of A Mineral Layer During Coke Dissolution Into Liquid Iron And Its Influence On The Kinetics Of Coke Dissolution Rate, M. Chapman, B. J. Monaghan, S A. Nightingale, J. Mathieson, Robert J. Nightingale
Formation Of A Mineral Layer During Coke Dissolution Into Liquid Iron And Its Influence On The Kinetics Of Coke Dissolution Rate, M. Chapman, B. J. Monaghan, S A. Nightingale, J. Mathieson, Robert J. Nightingale
Brian Monaghan
The formation and development of the mineral layer that forms between coke and liquid iron during carbon dissolution has been characterised. Coke particles (-2mm, +0.5mm) were added to the top surface of an iron 2 mass% C melt at representative ironmaking temperatures, for periods of time between 2 minutes and 120 minutes, before being quenched. The quenched samples were then sectioned and the solidified coke-melt interfacial region analysed in the SEM. Analysis showed that a mineral layer was present at the interface at all experimental temperatures (1450-1550oC) from 2 minutes and persisted beyond 120 minutes. The mineral layer was found …

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the impact of continuous casting technology on emissions of air pollutants from "Katowice" Steelworks in Dąbrowa Górnicza (Poland). Sources of emissions occurring in the manufacturing process and emissions levels have been identified. Implementation of continuous casting of steel has increased the efficiency of production and brought substantial ecological effects.
English title: Direct and indirect effects of introduction of continuous casting of steel in the balance sheet of pollutant emissions from "Katowice" Steelworks.
