Development And Characterization Of Ceramic Devices For Capillary Action In Microgravity For The Purpose Of Growing Vegetables In Space, Lucas S. Mougeot
Development And Characterization Of Ceramic Devices For Capillary Action In Microgravity For The Purpose Of Growing Vegetables In Space, Lucas S. Mougeot
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The future of humanity is often rendered in spectacular visions of a multiplanetary civilization with a booming space economy. Reaching this reality requires addressing one of the core needs of survival: food. Porous ceramics used for Passive Porous Tube Nutrient Delivery Systems (PPTNDS) offer a promising solution. In microgravity environments such as the International Space Station (ISS), fluid dynamics and liquid coagulation do not support conventional agricultural practices. Porous ceramic materials present a solution that enables nutrient solution diffusion via capillary action.
In this research, it was determined that extruding a wadding ceramic tube and sintering it at 1900 °F …
Near-Earth Ion Irradiation Effects On Functional Ceramic Materials: A Combined Experimental-Monte Carlo Approach, William J. Sands
Near-Earth Ion Irradiation Effects On Functional Ceramic Materials: A Combined Experimental-Monte Carlo Approach, William J. Sands
All Theses
The near-Earth space radiation environment is a complex system that creates a harmful environment for materials to operate in. Motivated by the search for using optical defects as an indicator of radiation damage, five single-crystal functional ceramic materials were selected to undergo ion irradiation at conditions found in the near-Earth space environment. Due to the complex nature of ion irradiation effects in ceramic materials, a host of calculations and experimental characterization methods were used. Calculations using the 2013 SRIM code were used to evaluate the ion projected range and the type and number of defects (vacancies) created by ion irradiation. …
Mechanical Properties Of Boride Based Ceramics, Alec Murchie
Mechanical Properties Of Boride Based Ceramics, Alec Murchie
Doctoral Dissertations
“This research focuses on the elevated mechanical properties of diboride based materials at room and elevated temperatures. These materials include a ZrB2 ceramic, a ZrB2-WC-SiC ceramic, and a (Hf,Mo,Nb,Ta,W,Zr)B2 high entropy boride (HEB). The room temperature flexural strength for the ZrB2 ceramic was 447 MPa and the fracture toughness was 2.3 MPa·m1/2. The strength decreased to 196 MPa at 1800°C, and then increased to 360 MPa at 2300°C. The fracture toughness increased to 3.1 MPa·m1/2 at 2200°C. The strength up to 1800°C was likely controlled by a combination of effects: surface damage …

Mechanical Engineering
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL) has several steps in the production process for ceramic nanofiber tubes that they would like to improve - electrospinning, cutting, rolling, sealing and heat treating. We undertook the challenge to deliver LLNL with a semi-automated process that efficiently integrates the steps of cutting, rolling, and sealing to save time and improve control over end dimensions. In this document, we discuss the technical background of the manufacturing steps currently followed to create nanofiber tubes, identify which steps are incorporated in our prototype and explain how they will interface with one another, define the design requirements, present …
Electroless Nickel Plating And Spark Plasma Sintering Of Nano Zro2 For Mechanical Property Enhancement, Kunlong Jia
Electroless Nickel Plating And Spark Plasma Sintering Of Nano Zro2 For Mechanical Property Enhancement, Kunlong Jia
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
A new approach of combined electroless nickel plating (ENP) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) was used to determine the feasibility of fracture toughness improvement of ZrO2. Nano-grained yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) particles of 100nm average diameter were coated with about 1-5 nm of nickel coating by ENP. To reduce nano particle agglomeration throughout the ENP process; vigorous agitation with an ultrasonic horn was used. The coated powder was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study the microstructure and coating characteristics. The coating was identified to be predominantly nickel and of …
Measuring Characteristic Shrinkage Variability Due To Metal Loading Effects In Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic Using Image Processing, John Ezekiel Zumbro
Measuring Characteristic Shrinkage Variability Due To Metal Loading Effects In Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic Using Image Processing, John Ezekiel Zumbro
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) has many benefits when it comes to electronic packaging due to the low dielectric loss, reliability in extreme environments, and high breakdown voltage. Though the ceramic has a lot of benefits it is not widely used due to the high cost and complexities associated with manufacturing. One of these issues with manufacturing is compensating for the shrinkage of the ceramic, this is accomplished by using an expansion factor, creating the “green” or manufactured design. This expansion factor is approximated through knowledge of the ceramic factors such as the metal loading, layers of ceramic tape, firing …

Material Properties Design Using Simulations And Experiments For Powder Injection Molding Of Lead Zirconate Titanate (Pzt)., Bhushan Pramod Bandiwadekar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Powder injection molding (PIM) process simulations can be performed to minimize the number of injection molding experiments by estimating material properties necessary for PIM simulations. In current work, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) powder-polymer binder feedstock was compounded for 45 vol. % and 52 vol. % solids loading. PIM experiments on designed micro-pillar array geometry were performed using 52 vol. % PZT. Using PIM experiments results as basis, PIM simulations were performed on designed micro-pillar array geometries to understand the effectiveness of PIM simulations with the use of estimated feedstock properties in predicting molding behavior that have micro-features. Additionally, PIM simulations …

The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of hot embossing on alumina based ceramics as a cost-efficient procedure for manufacturing microfluidic testing components. Alumina ceramics were used as an exploratory phase for the final objective of the project, manufacturing of Berea sandstone based ceramic samples. These testing components are vital to the growth of various fields ranging from the retrieval of oil and natural gas to studying the water purification process of aquifers. Previous research has shown potential in using hot embossing on Alumina based ceramics; however, complications with extrusion and micro-structure quality were observed. For this …
Controlling Properties Of Agglomerates For Chemical Processes, Joseph A. Halt
Controlling Properties Of Agglomerates For Chemical Processes, Joseph A. Halt
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Iron ore pellets are hard spheres made from powdered ore and binders. Pellets are used to make iron, mainly in blast furnaces. Around the time that the pelletizing process was developed, starch was proposed as a binder because it’s viscous, adheres well to iron oxides, does not contaminate pellets and is relatively cheap. In practice, however, starch leads to weak pellets with rough surfaces – these increase the amount of dust generated within process equipment and during pellet shipping and handling. Thus, even though the usual binder (bentonite clay) contaminates pellets, pelletizers prefer it to starch or other organics.

Design And Testing Of A Top Mask Projection Ceramic Stereolithography System For Ceramic Part Manufacturing, Dylan Robert De Caussin
Design And Testing Of A Top Mask Projection Ceramic Stereolithography System For Ceramic Part Manufacturing, Dylan Robert De Caussin
Master's Theses
Ceramic manufacturing is an expensive process with long lead times between
the initial design and final manufactured part. This limits the use of ceramic as a viable material unless there is a large project budget or high production volume associated with the part. Ceramic stereolithography is an alternative to producing low cost parts through the mixing of a photo curable resin and ceramic particles. This is an additive manufacturing process in which each layer is built upon the previous to produce a green body that can be sintered for a fully dense ceramic part.
This thesis introduces a new approach …
Effective Dielectric Constant Of Two Phase Dielectric Systems, Vladimir Petrovsky, Piotr Jasinski, Fatih Dogan
Effective Dielectric Constant Of Two Phase Dielectric Systems, Vladimir Petrovsky, Piotr Jasinski, Fatih Dogan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Various theoretical approaches are implemented for electrical characterization of two-phase material systems. Most of these approaches do not include possibility of percolation of the dispersed material. In this article brick wall model is extended on the systems exhibiting percolation. Transition from brick wall geometry to corresponding equivalent circuits provides final equations for effective dielectric constant. Comparison of theoretical results with experimental data shows that developed equations provide good fitting of effective dielectric constant to experimental values. Dielectric constants of both phases and percolation threshold calculated from the fitting match the corresponding experimental values of the phases.

Aqueous-Based Extrusion Fabrication is an additive manufacturing technique that extrudes ceramic slurries of high solids loading layer by layer for part fabrication. The material reservoir in a previously developed system has been modified to allow for starting and stopping of extrusion process on demand. Design pros and cons are examined and a comparison between two material reservoir designs is made. Tests were conducted to determine the optimal deposition parameters for starting and stopping of the extrudate on demand. The collected test data is used to create a process model that describes the relationship between ram velocity and material extrusion rate. …
