Creep And Oxidation Of Hafnium Diboride-Based Ultra High Temperature Ceramics At 1500°C, Anthony J. Degregoria

Theses and Dissertations

Ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are leading candidates for aerospace structural applications in high temperature environments, including the leading edges of hypersonic aircraft and thermal protection systems for atmospheric re-entry vehicles. Before UHTCs can be used in such applications, their structural integrity and environmental durability must be assured, which requires a thorough understanding and characterization of their creep and oxidation behavior at relevant service temperatures.

Effects Of Temperature On Aqueous Freeform Extrusion Fabrication, Jie Li, Ming-Chuan Leu, Greg Hilmas Aug 2015

Effects Of Temperature On Aqueous Freeform Extrusion Fabrication, Jie Li, Ming-Chuan Leu, Greg Hilmas

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of temperature on ceramic parts produced by paste extrusion based additive manufacturing followed by sintering. A computer-controlled gantry system equipped with a piston extruder was used to extrude aqueous alumina paste. The system includes a temperature control subsystem that allows for freeform extrusion fabrication inside a low-temperature (<0°C) chamber. It can also be used for fabricating parts on a hot plate at ambient or higher temperatures (≥20°C). Test specimens were fabricated from aqueous aluminum pastes at -20°C in the low-temperature chamber and also on the hot plate at 40°C. The minimum angles achievable by these two processes for part fabrication, without use of support material, were compared. Also compared were the relative density and mechanical properties of the parts obtained after sintering. Microstructures were examined via scanning electron microscopy in order to obtain a deeper understanding of the effect of fabrication temperature.

Freeform Extrusion Fabrication Of Titanium Fiber Reinforced Bioactive Glass Scaffolds, Albin Thomas, Krishna C. R. Kolan, Ming-Chuan Leu, Greg Hilmas

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although implants made with bioactive glass have shown promising results for bone repair, their application in repairing load-bearing long bones is limited due to their low fracture toughness and fairly fast degradation response in vivo. In this paper, we describe our investigation of freeform extrusion fabrication of silicate based 13-93 bioactive glass scaffolds reinforced with titanium fibers. A composite paste was prepared with 13-93 bioactive glass filled with titanium fibers (~16 µm in diameter and aspect ratio of ~250) having a volume fraction of 0.4 vol. %. This paste was then extruded to fabricate scaffolds with an extrudate diameter …

Grain Boundary Migration Of Nio-Mgo Alloys, Xin Li Phuah, David Lowing, John Blendell Aug 2015

Grain Boundary Migration Of Nio-Mgo Alloys, Xin Li Phuah, David Lowing, John Blendell

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Grain boundary engineering offers enhanced control of microstructure development during processing, leading to improved final material properties. However, using the effects of the interfacial energy anisotropy on grain boundary mobility to control microstructure development is not well understood. The NiO-MgO system is studied as it has complete solid solubility and a transition in the faceting behavior with composition due to changes in the interfacial energy anisotropy. NiO-MgO powders were produced through the amorphous citrate process and modifications to the process were made to reduce particle and agglomerate size. The powders were pressed and sintered in various conditions to produce fine …

Burner, Emitter, And Recuperator Development For Lightweight Thermophotovoltaic Power Supply, Lewis Fraas, Leonid Minkin, J. Avery, Hui She, L. Ferguson, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Like batteries, thermophotovoltaic generators produce DC electricity quietly. TPV uses infrared photovoltaic cells to convert infrared radiation from a combustion heated ceramic IR emitter. However, because the specific energy in a hydrocarbon fuel like propane or butane is 12,900 Wh/kg, much larger than the specific energy of 145 Wh/kg for a Li-ion battery, TPV is very promising as a lightweight DC power supply. A portable cylindrical thermophotovoltaic (TPV) battery replacement concept has been previously described. It consists of a cylindrical TPV receiver assembly using simple diffused junction GaSb IR cells along with a novel omega recuperator and a novel doped …

Tensile Test Design To Measure Interlayer Adhesion In Investment Casting Shells For Spalling Mitigation, Shelby Boyd, Alex Miller, Jameson Senger

Materials Engineering

We designed a tensile test fixture for a 112 lbf capacity Instron load frame that imparts a normal force on the face of a button epoxied to an investment casting shell sample, delaminating the shell area attached to the button. Using a green standard shell (Group 1), a partially fired standard shell (Group 2), and a green shell with a different third coat (Group 3), we verified that the fixture can measure differences in strength between sample groups. We attached steel buttons to leveled samples with 0.05 mL of Hysol-Loctite 9340 epoxy, let it cure for 48 hours, and tested …

Here the polymerization of 8-amino-2-naphthol (AN) is reported without use of an additional external template, surfactants or functional dopants. For this, NaOCl and hydrochloride acid solution (1.0 M) were used as oxidant and reaction medium, respectively. The structure of oligomer was elucidated by FT-IR, UV–vis and 1 H-NMR techniques. The number average molecular weight of oligomer was found to be 2200Da with a polydispersity index of 1.4 by size exclusion chromatography. This oligomer exhibited a multicolor emission behavior as it was excited at different wavelengths. Redox states were clarified by cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique and the relationship between anodic/cathodic peak …

Comparison Of Low-Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic And Direct Bonded Copper For Single Ended Primary Inductance Topology, Kristopher Cody Johnson

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This work examines the thermal dissipation characteristics of Low-Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) and Direct Bonded Copper (DBC) with the implementation of a Single Ended Primary Inductance Converter (SEPIC) topology. The advantages and disadvantages of the two substrates will be explored in addition to a description of the design and control of the SEPIC. It will be shown that the DBC implementation is superior with regards to thermal dissipation, but that LTCC has advantages in high- density packaging, RF applications, and embedded components. These substrates and converters provide many advantages in industrial applications that include automotive and grid level implementations. Additional …

Reaction Kinetics Of Rare Earth And Actinide Materials, Brian Jon Jaques May 2015

Reaction Kinetics Of Rare Earth And Actinide Materials, Brian Jon Jaques

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the effects of atmosphere, time, and energy input (thermal and mechanical) on the kinetics of gas-solid and solid-solid reactions in systems of dysprosium, uranium, oxygen, and nitrogen. Accordingly, Chapter Two presents a novel synthesis technique used to form DyN via a gas-solid reaction between dysprosium and nitrogen. DyN was rapidly formed through a mechanochemical process in a high energy ball mill at ambient temperatures. The progress of the reaction was quantified using in situ temperature and pressure measurements coupled with microscopy and x-ray diffraction. It was found that the rate of the nitridation reaction is controlled by …

Kinetics Of Corrosion Of Bn-Zro2-Sic Ceramics In Contact With Si-Killed Steel, Abhishek Kumar, Vivek Thapliyal, David G.C. Robertson, Jeffrey D. Smith

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanism and kinetics of corrosion of BN-ZrO2-SiC (MYCROSINT®SO43) by molten Si-killed steel was studied. Isothermal corrosion tests were performed for duration between 2 and 8 h. Refractory and steel composition and morphology changes were investigated. A kinetic model using process simulation software METSIM and thermochemical software FactSage was developed to understand refractory-steel interactions. The corrosion process showed a deviation from parabolic kinetics and was fitted by a combination of linear and parabolic terms. It was determined that corrosion of the BN-ZrO2-SiC refractory was governed by dissolution of SiC and BN and removal of ZrO2 …

High Pressure Behavior Of Mullite-Type Oxides: Phase Transitions, Amorphization, Negative Linear Compressibility And Microstructural Implications, Patricia Kalita

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Even though mullite occurs rarely in nature, it is perhaps one of the most important phases in both traditional and advanced ceramics. Existing and emerging applications of mullite and mullite-type materials include: high-temperature composites, aerospace materials, ballistic shielding for military applications and even non-linear optical materials. There are many uncertainties regarding the basic physical properties of mullite-type materials, particularly in terms of their high-pressure structural stability and mechanical behavior that are important to address for emerging applications of mullites as engineering materials. This work is the first reported comprehensive investigation of the high –pressure structural behavior of several different mullites …

Electrochemical Capture Of Co2 From Natural Gas Using A High-Temperature Ceramic-Carbonate Membrane, Jingjing Tong, Lingling Zhan, Jie Fang, Minfang Han, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

This study reports the first investigation of using a ceramic-carbonate dual-phase membrane to electrochemically separate CO2 from a simulated natural gas. The CO2 permeation flux density was systematically studied as a function of temperature, CO2 partial pressure and time. As expected, the flux density was observed to increase with temperature and CO2 partial pressure. Long-term stability test showed that flux density experienced an initial performance-improving “break-in” period followed by a slow decay. Post-test microstructural analysis suggested that a gradual loss of carbonate during the test could be the cause of the flux-time behavior observed.

Methods Of Extrusion On Demand For High Solids Loading Ceramic Paste In Freeform Extrusion Fabrication, Wenbin Li, Amir Ghazanfari, Ming Leu, Robert Landers Jan 2015

Methods Of Extrusion On Demand For High Solids Loading Ceramic Paste In Freeform Extrusion Fabrication, Wenbin Li, Amir Ghazanfari, Ming Leu, Robert Landers

Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering

Fabrication of highly dense parts with complex geometry by paste-extrusion-based solid freeform fabrication processes requires a precise control of the extrusion flow rate to dispense material on demand, which is often referred as Extrusion-On-Demand (EOD). The extrusion process for aqueous ceramic pastes is complex and difficult to control due to their non-Newtonian behavior, compressibility and inhomogeneity. In this study, three methods of EOD (based on ram extruder, needle valve, and auger valve) are introduced and investigated for the extrusion of high solids loading (i.e., >50%, volumetric) aqueous alumina paste. Optimal extrusion process parameters for these methods are determined through printing …

Subcutaneous microvascular responses to bioactive glass microfibers (45S5, 13-93B3, and 13-93B3Cu) and bioactive glass beads (13-93, 13-93B3, and 13-93B3Cu) were assessed via: noninvasive imaging of skin microvasculature; histomorphometry of microvascular densities; and quantitative PCR measurements of mRNA expression of VEGF and FGF-2 cytokines. Live imaging via dorsal skin windows showed the formation at two weeks of a halo-like structure infused with microvessels surrounding implanted borate-based 13-93B3 and 13-93B3Cu glass beads, a response not observed with …

Fundamental Studies Of Surfactant Templated Metal Oxide Materials Synthesis And Transformation For Adsorption And Energy Applications, Saikat Das Jan 2015

Fundamental Studies Of Surfactant Templated Metal Oxide Materials Synthesis And Transformation For Adsorption And Energy Applications, Saikat Das

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

This work addresses fundamental aspects of designing templates and curing conditions for the synthesis of mesoporous metal oxide thin films. The first section addresses selection of cationic-carbohydrate surfactant mixtures to synthesize templated silica thin films for selective adsorption of simple carbohydrates based on molecular imprinting. Nuclear magnetic resonance and fluorescence spectroscopy results suggest a novel structure for mixtures of alkyl glucopyranosides or xylopyranosides with cationic (trimethylammonium) surfactants. Despite thermodynamically favorable mixing, the carbohydrate headgroups in the mixed micelle adopt an inverted configuration with their headgroups in the micelle core, and therefore are inaccessible for molecular imprinting. This orientation occurs even …

Fusion Welding Of Diboride-Carbide Ceramic Composites, Derek Scott King Jan 2015

Fusion Welding Of Diboride-Carbide Ceramic Composites, Derek Scott King

Doctoral Dissertations

"Plasma and pulsed plasma arc welding (PAW and PPAW) processes were used to fusion weld ZrB2 containing 20 vol% ZrC. Varying welding parameters resulted in changes in weld pool shape and size, and the size of ZrB2 grains within the fusion zone. For PAW processes that resulted in a keyhole fusion zone (full penetration), the arc to workpiece power transfer efficiency was estimated to be 2 grain lengths were observed to decrease between binary PAW FZs (~1 mm in length), and binary PPAW FZs (~0.8 mm in length), and an increasing aspect ratio for ZrB2 grains in …
