Congenital Epidermoid Cyst Results In Muscle Fusion Defect In The Upper Lip, Fatih Dogan, Ibrahim Hakan Bucak

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Epidermoid cysts are rarely detected malformations in the oral cavity. Their development sites are the sublingual, submaxillary, and submandibular spaces. In this paper, we report a three-month-old infant who was admitted to our hospital due upper lip swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that she had a two-centimeter cystic lesion and fusion defects of orbicularis oris muscle. The cyst was surgically removed, and histopathological diagnosis was “epidermoid cyst.” In recent literature, we could not find reports related to orbicularis oris muscle fusion defects because of epidermoid cyst.

Interaction Of Bn-Zro2-Sic Ceramics With Inclusions In Si-Killed Steel, Abhishek Kumar, Vivek Thapliyal, Jeffrey D. Smith

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Boron nitride (BN)-based ceramics are often used as containment refractory in thin-strip steel production. The interaction of this material (BN-ZrO2-SiC: -MYCROSINT® SO43) was studied using a steel-inclusion system in a laboratory setup. Isothermal interaction tests were performed to evaluate the interaction of inclusions with this refractory. It was determined that corrosion of the BN refractory occurs through a dissolution mechanism and it was more severe in contact with steel compared to slag. A thermodynamic model was developed using FactSage to study the change in liquid steel/slag composition with refractory interaction. Thermodynamic predictions were in agreement with the experimental …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The pore geometry of bioactive glass scaffolds intended for use in bone repair or replacement is one of the most important parameters that could determine the rate of bone regeneration. The pore geometry would also affect the mechanical properties of the scaffolds and their rate of degradation. Scaffolds with five different architectures, having ~50% porosity, were fabricated with silicate (13–93) and borate (13–93B3) based bioactive glasses using a laser sintering process. An established, late-osteoblasts/early-osteocytes cell line was used to perform cell proliferation tests on the scaffolds. The results indicated that the cells proliferate significantly more on the scaffolds which mimic …

Modulating Notochordal Differentiation Of Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Using Natural Nucleus Pulposus Tissue Matrix, Yongxing Liu, M. N. Rahaman, B. Sonny Bal

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) can differentiate into notochordal cell (NC)-like cells when cultured in the presence of natural porcine nucleus pulposus (NP) tissue matrix. The method promises massive production of high-quality, functional cells to treat degenerative intervertebral discs (IVDs). Based on our previous work, we further examined the effect of cell-NP matrix contact and culture medium on the differentiation, and further assessed the functional differentiation ability of the generated NC-like. The study showed that direct contact between hiPSCs and NP matrix can promote the differentiation yield, whilst both the contact and non-contact cultures can generate functional NC-like cells. …

Characterizing The Pore Structure Of Carbonated Natural Wollastonite, Chiara Villani, Robert Spragg, Raikhan Tokpatayeva, Jan Olek, W. Jason Weiss

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

This paper focuses on examining the pore structure of a cementitious paste made with a calcium silicate (wollastonite) that reacts with carbon dioxide and water to form a hardened solid. The pore structure of the hardened solid has been characterized using vapor sorption and desorption, low-temperature differential scanning calorimetry (LT-DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The total porosity was also measured using mass measurement in oven-dry and vacuum-saturated conditions. Evidence exists that support the hypothesis that the solid has two main pore sizes: large macropores (>10 nm) appear to form between the initial calcium silicate particles and small micropores …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

High energy ball milling is a broad family of well-known techniques for materials processing that includes mechanochemical synthesis, in which the milled materials react during milling. The latter may involve components reacting in the solid, liquid, or gas phases, and the operative kinetics have hardly been studied. Several manufacturers of high energy ball mills have recently made available instrumented milling vessel lids. These lids are able to monitor the temperature of the lid and the gas pressure within the vessel in situ during milling experiments. This ability is a significant improvement over the ad hoc instrumentation setups sometimes discussed in …

Phase Transformations In Calcium Substituted Lanthanum Ferrite, Patrick M. Price May 2014

Phase Transformations In Calcium Substituted Lanthanum Ferrite, Patrick M. Price

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Increasing world energy demands are still heavily dependent on fossil fuels. To meet these demands, crude oil is increasingly being extracted from remote locations where natural gas pipelines do not exist. It is not profitable for oil and gas companies to transport natural gas by ship or truck from these remote locations so it is combusted on site in the form of gas flares. Critics oppose this practice due to the environmental impact from pollution and carbon emissions created during the flaring process. Oil and gas companies are eager to find profitable ways to eliminate natural gas lines in order …

Freeze Thaw Durability Of Internally Cured Concrete Made Using Superabsorbent Polymers, Wesley A. Jones, W. Jason Weiss Jan 2014

Freeze Thaw Durability Of Internally Cured Concrete Made Using Superabsorbent Polymers, Wesley A. Jones, W. Jason Weiss

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

The use of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) to produce internally cured concrete has been shown to be effective in reducing the potential for restrained shrinkage cracking of high performance concrete mixtures. However, not much is known regarding the freeze–thaw durability of concrete mixtures that incorporate SAPs for internal curing (IC). When SAP particles desorb (or partially desorb) the “water” (pore fluid) they contain for the purposes of IC, some believe that the void space created by these particles can provide enough empty voids to accommodate the additional volume caused by water expansion upon freezing. This paper investigates the freeze–thaw durability of …
