The Effect Of Electrodes On The Thermally Stimulated Currents In Sodium Silicate Glass, Ruth Mogrovejo Cuzmar Jan 1985

The Effect Of Electrodes On The Thermally Stimulated Currents In Sodium Silicate Glass, Ruth Mogrovejo Cuzmar

Masters Theses

“Electrodes play an important role in the study of alkali ion motion in glasses when TSPC/TSDC techniques are used. Silver, gold and combinations of them were used in the study of Na+ motion in Na2O·3SIO2 glass. The lower temperature peak is not affected by any of these electrodes, so it is attributed to the bulk glass. A second and third peak are strongly dependent on the kind of electrode used. A gold anode is a blocking electrode, and a gold cathode, is partially blocking. There is a tendency for a space charge polarization to form when …

Sintering Of Catio₃ With The Addition Of Caco₃ And Lif, Surapol Pleekram Jan 1985

Sintering Of Catio₃ With The Addition Of Caco₃ And Lif, Surapol Pleekram

Masters Theses

"The densification of CaTiO3 with the addition of 4.74, 5.90, 6.88 mol% CaCO3 and 22 mol% LiF was investigated over the temperature range 800° to 1050°C, for sintering times ranging from 1 to 216 hours. It was found that CaCO3 reacts with LiF and to form a liquid at a temperature of about 450°C. This liquid enhances the densification of CaTiO3 . The densification process was followed by making weight loss, shrinkage and porosity measurements. The microstructural development was determined by scanning electron microscope examination of both fractured and polished surfaces. X-ray diffraction and DTA/TGA were …

Thermally Stimulated Current Studies Of Barium Titanate Capacitors, Patrick Donald Martin Jan 1984

Thermally Stimulated Current Studies Of Barium Titanate Capacitors, Patrick Donald Martin

Masters Theses

"Thermally stimulated polarization current (TSPC) and thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurements were used to study sample current behavior based on the thermally activated release of trapped charges and polarization mechanisms. Samples studied included laboratory-prepared barium titanate samples (the barium to titanium ratio ranging from 0.96 to 1.04) and commercial ceramic capacitors. Both TSPC and TSDC showed the current spectra of the barium titanate samples were a function of crystal structure and the Ba/Ti ratio. The TSPC/TSDC results of the ceramic capacitors showed differences between capacitor formulations. TSPC/TSDC results also showed differences between good capacitors (physically and electrically) and capacitors …

Development Of Glass Microspheres For Radiotherapeutic Applications, Thomas A. Wetteroth Jan 1983

Development Of Glass Microspheres For Radiotherapeutic Applications, Thomas A. Wetteroth

Masters Theses

"Oxide glasses make excellent candidates for radiotherapeutic microspheres used in liver cancer treatment because of their generally high chemical durability and safety of manufacture. From the compositions containing ~5 wt% P2O5 studied, magnesium alumino silicate glass microspheres and magnesium alkali silicate glass microspheres with 4 wt% ZrO2 had acceptably low releases of both elemental phosphorus in deionized water at 50°C, and radioactive 32P in human blood plasma at 37°C. The relative ranking of glass compositions in the elemental phosphorus leach test shows good agreement with the rankings of compositions in the radioactive 32P leach …

Thermodynamic calculations were performed to compare this model to the experimental results with reasonable success"--Abstract, page iii.

Mechanical Properties Of Alumina For Orthopedic Implant Use, Ho Tong Fang Jan 1983

Mechanical Properties Of Alumina For Orthopedic Implant Use, Ho Tong Fang

Masters Theses

"The static fatigue, flexural strength and chemical corrosion of three commercially prepared, polycrystalline aluminas, two of orthopedic implant grade, were measured in demineralized water at 37°C and 70°C. The dissolution of a Ca-rich impurity phase, probably a glass, segregated at the grain boundaries and external surface, appears at least partially responsible for the significant difference in static fatigue of these three aluminas. The present results indicate that the minimum static fatigue in demineralized water, and the highest flexural strength in demineralized water and HF solution are both achieved by the alumina characterized by a low concentration of Ca at the …

Sintering Of Lif-Fluxed Srtio₃, Marie-Christine P. Proudian Jan 1983

Sintering Of Lif-Fluxed Srtio₃, Marie-Christine P. Proudian

Masters Theses

"Lithium fluoride (LiF) is used to enhance the sinterability of perovskites, as it results in the formation of a liquid phase. In this study, the mechanism and kinetics of sintering for LiF-fluxed strontium titanate (SrTiO3) were investigated. The Sr/Ti ratio was varied between 0.98 and 1.03, and the LiF content in the green compact ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 weight percent. Sintering was conducted at temperatures between 695° and 925°C for isothermal dilatometric shrinkage measurements for time intervals of 6000 seconds or less. Weight loss, shrinkage, density and porosity measurements were conducted on samples isothermally sintered between 690° …

Sessile Drop Studies Of Gallium On Alumina, Timothy John Snyder Jan 1982

Sessile Drop Studies Of Gallium On Alumina, Timothy John Snyder

Masters Theses

"The liquid-vapor and solid-vapor interfacial energies of the system Ga-Al2O3 were determined by the sessile drop technique. The interfacial energies were found to decrease with increasing temperature and P02.

A maximum liquid-vapor interfacial energy of 581 ergs/cm² was found for a clean sessile drop at 1227°C. Values for Γ0, the excess concentration of oxygen, were calculated for both the liquid-vapor and solid-liquid interfaces. The work of adhesion between molten Ga and Al2O3 was found to increase with decreasing P02 with a maximum of 576 ergs/cm2 occurring …

The Influence Of Manganese Oxide On Sintering Of A Commercial Natural Magnesite., Alamar Kasan Duarte

Masters Theses

"Sintering studies on a commercial natural magnesite have been done to investigate the influence of MnO doping (MnO concentration from 0.16 to 2.50 wt.%) on the densification process over the temperature range 1520 to 1760°C , over periods of time from 3,600 to 57,600s in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres (Air and PO2 = 10-7 KPa. In an air atmosphere the additions of MnO enhances the densification process. This fact may be associated with an increase in lattice diffusion of Mg ions due to an increase in cation vacancies in the MgO lattice from the presence of …

Structure And Properties Of Neodymium Chromite, David Charles Hitchcock Jan 1981

The crystal structure and lattice parameters were determined by x-ray diffraction. All compositions were orthorhombic Pbnm.

Pellets were pressed from powders of each composition and sintered to high density in a reducing atmosphere. When a small amount of Fe was substituted for Cr, the powder could be sintered in air.

Electrical conductivity for acceptor doped NdCrO3 varied from about 1 (ohm cm)-1 at room temperature to about 10 (ohm cm)-1 at 900°C, about two orders of magnitude higher than the electrical conductivity of the …

Properties Of High Alumina Refractories After Exposure To Steam/H₂ Atmospheres, David W. Lang Jan 1980

Properties Of High Alumina Refractories After Exposure To Steam/H₂ Atmospheres, David W. Lang

Masters Theses

"Selected properties of a dense fired alumina, a phosphate-bonded ramming mix, and a calcium aluminate cement-bonded castable were evaluated after exposure at 260°C and 538°C to steam/H2 atmospheres (2.58, 5.17, and 6.89) MPa. Chemical reactions in the refractories were determined by x-ray diffraction, DTA/TGA, and changes in physical properties. The modulus of rupture (MOR) of the dense alumina decreased with increasing steam pressure and degree of saturation. The calcium aluminate cement phases in the castable were most reactive in 260°C steam and formed several hydrated phases which generally resulted in a higher MOR. The MOR of the ramming mix …

Calcium Migration In Dense Alumina Aged In Water And Physiological Media, Heidi H. Osterholm Jan 1980

Calcium Migration In Dense Alumina Aged In Water And Physiological Media, Heidi H. Osterholm

Masters Theses

"The flexural strength and relative Ca concentration at the external surface were measured for a dense alumina aged in deionized water and Ringer's solution at 40⁰C for 60 weeks and at 80⁰C for 45 weeks. Changes in the Ca concentration at the external surface and flexural strength during aging were attributed to the dissolution of the calcium impurity believed to be present in a glass phase of unknown composition. Auger electron spectroscopy was used to investigate the relative concentration of the calcium impurity at the external and fracture surfaces of a dense alumina after in vivo exposure for 6, 12 …

Microwave Sintering Of Batio₃ Ceramics, Kurt Duane Humphrey Jan 1980

Microwave Sintering Of Batio₃ Ceramics, Kurt Duane Humphrey

Masters Theses

"Barium titanate and BaTiO₃-based multilayer capacitors were sintered in a commercial microwave oven. The oven was equipped with a 2.45 GHz continuous-wave magnetron with a maximum power output of 650 watts.

Microwave-absorbing setters made of SiC were used to offset thermal losses from the samples and allow sintering temperatures (>1325°C) to be achieved. Pure samples were pressed from commercial BaTiO₃ powder and microwave sintered to about 90% of theoretical density. Multilayer capacitors were obtained from commercial manufacturers and used in all sintering experiments. A comparison between microwave sintered material and identical samples sintered in a conventional electric furnace revealed …

Development Of Impervious Low Thermal Expansion Petalite Bodies, Suchinda Chotipanich Jan 1979

Development Of Impervious Low Thermal Expansion Petalite Bodies, Suchinda Chotipanich

Masters Theses

"Impervious petalite bodies were formulated from petalite, lithium aluminosilicate frit and kaolin. Thermal expansion coefficients for selected bodies were less than 2 x 10⁻⁶ /°C(20 - 600 °C). Mineralogy and the reactions in systems containing petalite, lithium aluminosilicate frit and kaolin were observed. Silica-poor high quartz solid solution was found to be the reaction product formed from the reaction between frit and kaolin before conversion to ß-spodumene solid solution at higher temperatures. The crystallization of the ß-spodumene solid solution phases in this system did not occur at the same temperature resulting in variation in the size of the crystallites. The …

Boehmite-Bonded High-Alumina Refractories, Gerhard H. Schiroky Jan 1979

Boehmite-Bonded High-Alumina Refractories, Gerhard H. Schiroky

Masters Theses

"High-alumina refractories (99+ % Al₂O₃) were produced by pressing a mixture of 70% tabular alumina and 30% reactive alumina and autoclaving in saturated steam at 1.4 MPa (200 psia)/194 °C to 3.4 MPa (500 psia)/242 °C for 12 to 96 h. Autoclaving converted the reactive alumina to boehmite which acted as the bond phase. At room temperature the MOR ranged up to 37 MPa depending upon boehmite content. The hot-MOR decreased steadily with increasing temperature, but was still 8 MPa at 1400 °C which exceeds that of comparable cement-bonded or conventionally fired high-alumina refractories. The estimated autoclaving costs are lower …

An X-Ray Diffraction Analysis Of The Lacro₃-Laalo₃ Solid Solution Series, Robin Ashley Murphy Jan 1978

An X-Ray Diffraction Analysis Of The Lacro₃-Laalo₃ Solid Solution Series, Robin Ashley Murphy

Masters Theses

"A crystallographic study was made of powders from the LaCr1-x AlxO₃, La.90(Mg.05 Cr1-x Alx ).95O2.83 , and La1±xCrO₃ systems. The relationships between composition and thermal expansion, electrical conductivity, and vaporization were also investigated. The x-ray diffraction data of the LaCrCO₃ - LaAlO₃ compounds showed the system to form a single phase solid solution for any given sample from the series. The orthorhombic to rhombohedral phase transition was depressed to below room temperature at approximately 13% Al+3 substitution"--Abstract, page ii.

The Influence Of Oxygen Activity On Sintering Of Strontium Doped Lanthanum Chromite., Leslie Groupp Jan 1975

The Influence Of Oxygen Activity On Sintering Of Strontium Doped Lanthanum Chromite., Leslie Groupp

Masters Theses

"The influence of oxygen activity upon the sintering of lanthanum chromite (La1-xSrx CrO3) with x ranging from Oto 0.2 was investigated using chemically prepared powders of <0.1 microns particle size. The results show that at a temperature of 1740 ° C densities of >92% of theoretical could be achieved if the oxygen activities were maintained in the 10-11 to 10-12 atm. range. If oxygen activity exceeds 10-10 atm., densities of not >80% theoretical could be obtained. For the compositions studied, room temperature X-ray analysis of both the starting powders and sintered compacts show the compositions to be orthorhombic and single phase. The ambient lattice parameters and resistivity measurements decreased …

Effect Of Temperature, Aging, And Composition On Phase Development In The System Al₂O₃-P₂O₅-H₂0., John Allan Middleton Jan 1975

Effect Of Temperature, Aging, And Composition On Phase Development In The System Al₂O₃-P₂O₅-H₂0., John Allan Middleton

Masters Theses

The chemical and physical conditions for the formation of various phases of aluminum phosphate were studied. Mixtures of Al2O3 and H3PO4 were aged in sealed containers and examined for phase development by X-ray diffraction. The results revealed the aging of samples to be a critical process for the formation of equilibrium phase assemblages at low temperatures, Initial composition becomes important as equilibrium is neared and at elevated temperatures when the molar ratios of Al2O3, P2O5, and H2O determine what phases will be formed. Temperature …

Masters Theses

"The ionic thermal current (ITC) method has been employed to study alkali ion motion in a sodium silicate glass and two sodium-rubidium silicate glasses over the temperature range 110 ° K to 400 ° K. T wo peaks and three peaks were observed in a l.0Na2O-3.0SiO2 glass and a 0.75Na2O-0.25Rb2O-3.0SiO2 glass, respectively. Only one peak and a high temperature shoulder were observed in the 0.50Na2O-0.50Rb2O-3.0SiO2 glass. These peaks were attributed to orientation and space charge polarization with each peak associated with a particular movement of the sodium …

Effect Of Dissolved Water On Physical Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, E Richard Reynolds Jan 1974

Effect Of Dissolved Water On Physical Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, E Richard Reynolds

Masters Theses

"The effect of dissolved water on borate glasses containing 4-20 mol % Ag2O was investigated. Water was dissolved in the glasses by bubbling with a carrier gas (oxygen) containing different partial pressures of water vapor. A minimum in water solubility was found at 11 mol % Ag2O. Water contents in excess of 0.5 mol % H2O did not have a great effect on the transition temperature or the dilatometric softening point. Below 15 mol % Ag2O, the water content had no effect on the thermal expansion coefficients. Beyond 15 mol % Ag …

Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Strontium Titanate By Capacitance Manometry, Douglas Bugh Schwarz Jan 1974

Determination Of Oxygen Chemical Diffusion Coefficients In Single Crystal Strontium Titanate By Capacitance Manometry, Douglas Bugh Schwarz

Masters Theses

"The use of the tensi-volumetric apparatus to study the non-stoichiometric behavior of strontium titanate was discussed. Oxidation kinetics of reduced single crystal strontium titanate were measured with an ultrasensitive capacitance manometer as the sample absorbed oxygen in response to a changing oxygen activity.

The oxidation kinetics were found to fit a solution to Fick's second law for rectangularly shaped samples....

The procedure selected for measurement of the oxidation kinetics, and the method of obtaining diffusion coefficients from the oxidation data was discussed along with potential sources of error of the system"--Abstract, page ii.

Characterization Of A Mexican Halloysitic Clay And Behavior In Dry Pressing, Jesus L. Derat Jan 1973

Characterization Of A Mexican Halloysitic Clay And Behavior In Dry Pressing, Jesus L. Derat

Masters Theses

"A Mexican clay, intended to be used as refractory raw material, was identified. Problems encountered in the characterization of halloysitic clays are discussed and emphasis is made on the use of the electron microscope (scanning or transmission type) as a definite evidence of the existence of halloysite due to its unique morphology within the kaolinite group of clay minerals.

Beneficiation of this particular clay was carried out on a small scale hydrocyclone equipment and the results are discussed.

In an attempt to increase the green density in dry pressing of this halloysitic clay, mixtures with grog were prepared using different …

Under the same sintering conditions ferrites with higher dopant levels also sintered with normal growth but sintered to lower densities.

Due to discontinuous …

The Effect Of Porosity On Strength Degradation In Thermally Shocked Alumina, Russell David Smith Jan 1973

The Effect Of Porosity On Strength Degradation In Thermally Shocked Alumina, Russell David Smith

Masters Theses

"Strength degradation and crack propagation in Al2O3 are shown to depend on the initial strength and porosity of the material. Specimens were fabricated containing between 0 and 5% induced cylindrical, two dimensional, and spherical porosity. The strengths of the various porosity samples decreased discontinuously at a critical quenching temperature. No difference was observed in the critical temperature for the various aluminas; initial strength decrease occurred between 165°C and 175°C temperature differential. The strength retained after thermal shock decreased with increasing initial strength. The degree of damage sustained upon shocking was also characterized by crack density and crack …

Phase Transformations In The System Zro₂-Cao, Damri Sukhotanang Jan 1972

Phase Transformations In The System Zro₂-Cao, Damri Sukhotanang

Masters Theses

"Thermal expansion, thermal hysteresis, and the monoclinic tetragonal phase transformation of ZrO₂ have been studied with high temperature x-ray diffractometry. The initial transformation temperature in pure ZrO₂, on heating, is about 1150ºC. The transformation occurs over a 100ºC temperature range and thermal hysteresis occurs on heating and cooling. The mechanism of the transformation is related to preferred vibrational modes of atoms on the AO -CO plane of the monoclinic structure. Because the monoclinic BO axis is parallel with the tetragonal [110] axis, structural relationships can be seen to be a controlling factor in the transformation. Initiation of …

A Mass Spectrometric Characterization Of Positive Ions Created In Simple Vacuum Diodes Incorporating Oxide Cathodes With Supplementary Analysis Of Background Gases, Larry A. Addington Jan 1972

A Mass Spectrometric Characterization Of Positive Ions Created In Simple Vacuum Diodes Incorporating Oxide Cathodes With Supplementary Analysis Of Background Gases, Larry A. Addington

Masters Theses

"Simple diodes were constructed utilizing oxide cathodes and nickel anodes. The cathodes were obtained by applying a mixture of barium, strontium, and calcium carbonates to a nickel filament and decomposing them to yield the oxides. The products of decomposition were analyzed by monitoring the composition of the background gases in the vacuum chamber. A portion of the flux of positive ions bombarding the cathode during diode operation was analyzed. It was possible to determine the region of origin of the ions and their potential energy at the time of formation. Positive ions of chlorine, fluorine, sodium, potassium, and rubidium were …
