Manufacturing Of A Ceramic Turbine Rotor For A Compact Jet Engine, Bryan T. Leicht
Theses and Dissertations
The primary goal of this study was to develop a low-cost, timely, scalable manufacturing method that produced a ceramic turbine that can be tested as a drop-in replacement on a JetCat P400 small scale gas turbine engine. This research compared two processes for manufacturing a ceramic turbine utilizing a pour casting method and 3D printing using stereolithography ceramic manufacturing (SLCM). The pour casting method used Silicon Nitride to create a cast turbine using a sacrificial 3D printed mold. The SLCM method evaluated producing an alumina turbine using an ADMATEC Admaflex 300 SLCM printer to directly print a ceramic turbine. This …
Thermal Considerations For Film Cooling Materials With Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity, Carol E. Bryant
Thermal Considerations For Film Cooling Materials With Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity, Carol E. Bryant
Theses and Dissertations
Higher performance requirements and reduced core sizes are driving increases in turbine inlet temperature in gas turbine engines, surpassing the melting point of advanced materials. Newer materials, such as composites, are being introduced into the hot sections of gas turbine engines. Components in the hot section use film cooling to prevent melting. One unique aspect of some high-temperature composites is they have a bulk anisotropic thermal conductivity, therefore heat flow differs relative to traditional metallic components. Film cooling designs can be revolutionized by leveraging anisotropy in high-temperature materials. The purpose of this research is to examine thermal considerations for using …

Theses and Dissertations
Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) have the potential to be utilized in applications such as hypersonic vehicles, aircraft leading edges, hot sections of engines, and rocket nozzles. Of particular interest are advanced SiC/SiC composites that can withstand the elevated temperatures and harsh oxidizing environments while maintaining their properties and structural integrity under an applied load. Steam, a major component of combustion environment, is one such aggressive oxidizing environment. As steam passes through the SiC/SiC composite, entering the composite interior through the cracks in the SiC matrix, it becomes saturated with silicic acid, Si(OH)4. Before incorporating SiC/SiC composites in the …

Theses and Dissertations
The tension-tension fatigue behavior of two oxide-oxide ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) was investigated at 1200°C in laboratory air and steam. Both composites consist of a porous oxide matrix reinforced with laminated, woven mullite/alumina (NextelTM720) fibers. The first composite had an alumina matrix, while the second had an alumina-mullite matrix. First, we assessed the effects of incorporating mullite into the matrix material on fatigue performance by studying the tension-tension fatigue behavior of alumina-mullite matrix CMC. Second, we evaluated the effects of effusion holes on the alumina matrix CMC's fatigue performance. Specimens containing an array of 17 effusion holes of 0.5-mm diameter …

Fatigue Behavior Of An Advanced Melt-Infiltrated Sic/Sic Composite With Environmental Barrier Coating At 1200°C In Air And In Steam, Thaddeus M. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Advanced aerospace applications such as aircraft turbine engine components, hypersonic flight vehicles, and spacecraft reentry thermal protection systems require structural materials that have superior long-term mechanical properties under high temperature, high pressure, and varying environmental factors, such as moisture. Because of their low density, high strength and fracture toughness at high temperatures SiC fiber-reinforced SiC matrix composites are being evaluated for aircraft engine hot-section components. In these applications the composites will be subjected to various types of mechanical loadings at elevated temperatures in oxidizing environments. Because their constituents are intrinsically oxidation-prone, the most significant problem hindering SiC/SiC composites is oxidation …
Interlaminar Damage Detection In Composite Materials, Hariharan Rangarajan

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Using ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for high-temperature applications in jet engines increases durability and reduces weight and cooling requirements resulting in improved efficiency and fuel savings. Understanding, detecting, and monitoring different types of damage is essential to achieve optimal performance of CMC components. The Direct Current Potential Drop (DCPD) method is a non-destructive technique of estimating damage in composite materials.
DCPD technique works by measuring nodal potential differences when current is flown through the material. Direct current spreading in different woven and laminate composites is modeled to follow a ladder resistor network in which the nodal voltages decrease exponentially as …

Creep Of Hi-Nicalon™ S Ceramic Fiber Tows At 1100°C In Air And In Silicic Acid-Saturated Steam, Logan M. Gumucio
Theses and Dissertations
Innovations in SiC based ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) have yielded exceptional high-temperature properties and performance in aggressive oxidizing environments. These material characteristics provide potential avenues for future advancements in many applications where current metallic alloys perform near their operating temperature limits in a harsh environment. As steam (typically present in these environments) enters through cracks in the matrix of a SiC/SiC composite, it leaches Si and becomes saturated with silicic acid, Si(OH)4, prior to attacking the reinforcing SiC fibers. Therefore, it is paramount that a thorough understanding of the performance and durability of SiC fibers be obtained under …

Creep Of Hafnium Diboride -20 Vol% Silicon Carbide At 1500°C In Air, Glen E. Pry
Theses and Dissertations
Refractory metal borides, commonly referred to as Ultra High Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs), exhibit a number of unique properties, such as extremely high melting temperature and hardness, chemical stability, high electrical and thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance. It has been demonstrated that the addition of SiC improves the oxidation resistance of ZrB2- and HfB2-based UHTCs above 1200°C by modifying the composition of the oxide scale. Addition of SiC retards the oxidation rate of ZrB2 and HfB2 by forming a protective layer of borosilicate glass. Creep deformation is one of the critical criterion for structural application of ceramics at elevated temperatures. Compression …

Theses and Dissertations
Advanced SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are being considered for a variety of applications. Of interest is their ability to withstand exposure to high temperature in an aggressive oxidizing environment. The presence of steam creates such an environment. As steam traverses across a SiC/SiC composite and through cracks in the SiC matrix, it becomes saturated with silicic acid, Si(OH)4. It is essential to understand the long-term impacts and durability of SiC/SiC CMCs that have been exposed to such a demanding environment. The present research investigated creep of Hi-Nicalon™ S SiC fibers at 1000°C in air and in silicic …

Aircraft structural and engine components are subjected to elevated temperature and steam environments during operation. Turbine blades experience particularly harsh conditions that are approaching the operating temperature limits of current Nickel-based superalloys even with active cooling. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), which demonstrate high specific strength and specific stiffness and maintain these properties at elevated temperatures such that active cooling is not required, are prime candidates to replace superalloys as the materials for turbine blades. Ceramic matrix composites are composite materials that consist of a ceramic matrix with fiber reinforcement. This research investigated a silicon carbide (SiC) fiber, Hi-Nicalon™ S, which …

Studies Of Dynamic Crack Propagation And Crack Branching With Peridynamics, Youn Doh Ha, Florin Bobaru
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
In this paper we discuss the peridynamic analysis of dynamic crack branching in brittle materials and show results of convergence studies under uniform grid refinement (m-convergence) and under decreasing the peridynamic horizon (δ-convergence). Comparisons with experimentally obtained values are made for the crack-tip propagation speed with three different peridynamic horizons. We also analyze the influence of the particular shape of themicro-modulus function and of different materials (Duran 50 glass and soda-lime glass) on the crack propagation behavior. We show that the peridynamic solution for this problem captures all the main features, observed experimentally, of dynamic crack propagation and branching, as well …

Investigation Into The Behavior Of Geometrically Nonlinear Composite Arches, John C. Bailey
Investigation Into The Behavior Of Geometrically Nonlinear Composite Arches, John C. Bailey
Theses and Dissertations
This research modifies the existing finite element formulation of a potential energy based large deformation and moderate rotation theory. Hermitian shape functions replace the existing linear bending angle interpolations. Negligible differences between the two formulations indicate the underlying kinematics limit the accuracy, not the finite element interpolations. Using the new program, numerous nonlinear arch geometries are modeled to investigate the effects of arc length and thickness variations. Local and global snapping phenomena are captured as well as through the thickness shear driven nonlinearities.

Characterization Of Fatigue Behavior Of 2-D Woven Fabric Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Daniel J. Groner
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the fatigue behavior and associated damage mechanisms in notched and unnotched enhanced Sic-SiC ceramic matrix composite specimens at 1100°C. Stiffness degradation, strain variation, and hysteresis were evaluated to characterize material behavior. Microscopic examination was performed to characterize damage mechanisms. During high cycle-low stress fatigue tests, far less fiber-matrix interface debond was evident than in low cycle-high stress fatigue tests. Notched specimens exhibited minimal stress concentration during monotonic tensile testing and minimal notch sensitivity during fatigue testing. Damage mechanisms were also similar to unnotched.
