Characterization Of Cermet Fuel For Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (Ntp), James Floyd Mudd
Masters Theses
“A manned flight to Mars is met with many technical challenges, not the least of which is the development of propulsion technology capable of moving a transit vehicle from Earth orbit to Mars orbit. NASA is investigating Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) as a way of reducing flight time and providing the option for a mid-mission abort. NTP, which uses a high temperature nuclear reactor to heat a propellant, requires advanced fuel materials capable of withstanding temperatures well in excess of 2000 K. Among the fuel options are ceramic metal (cermet) composites composed of refractory metals and Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs). …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Split Hopkinson Bar (SHB) methods are widely used to experimentally characterize the mechanical properties of materials such as metals, concrete, and ceramics undergoing rapid deformation. NIU had a split-Hopkinson tensile apparatus that can conduct coarse tensile test, but it can’t output the useful signal. The aim of this thesis is to optimize the existing apparatus, so the high strain rate tensile tests for the stainless steel 304 can be conducted and useful signal can be got. The alignment of the bars is critical for a good signal that has less noise. To eliminate the noise signal, some accurate fixture is …

Precision Machining Of Polymer Matrix Composites, Victor Martinez Polanco
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This experiment was started to figure how the precision machining of polymer matrix composites differ from metals such as aluminum and steel. Polymer matrix composites are highly used in powered vehicles for their strength and light weight properties, but they are typically not machined to their final product how metals are. Polymer matrix composites are typically manufactured near their final shape, with some trimming involved to complete its shape. This research machined carbon fiber manufactured through a wet layup and through resin infusion, as well as aluminum and steel to compare their machineability and their surface finish. These materials were …

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a polymer that is expansively employed in denture base construction due to its low cost, aesthetics, lightweight, reparability, and processability. Nevertheless, this material is not ideal to fulfill the mechanical and physical characteristics of dental restorations. Despite the popularity of the thermal polymerization method, the main shortcoming is the prolonged curing period. Thus, correctly selecting a polymerization cycle and post-polymerization treatment is needed to achieve promising outcomes. In autoclave polymerization, pressure plays a crucial function in accelerating the initial polymerization as well as decreasing the pores and remaining monomer level, thereby improving the flexural strength. Besides, …

This research aims to reduce production capital costs and added value to natural products. The bio-mulching film was prepared by bacterial cellulose (BC) “Acetobacter xylinum”, extracted from three rotten fruits, grape, coconut, and pineapple under standard tests in the laboratory. The analysis from the FTIR technique confirmed to cellulose molecular vibration of BC films. XRD pattern was matched to structure crystallinity of JCPDS standard file which possessed a high percentage of crystallinity. The SEM micrographs were also revealed the 3D nanofiber network structure. The absorption capability of BC films could highly hold water in its structure. In addition, …

Two different pore modifiers (PM), artificial pozzolan (AP) and modified aluminum salt (MA), were introduced into the composition of a High Performance Cement Mortar (HPCM). The chemical compositions of raw materials, ordinary Portland cement (OPC), sea sand, AP, and MA were identified by X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). The hydration kinetics resulting from each PM added to the HPCM was investigated by the relevance of hydration temperature. The mechanical properties such as compressive strength, dynamic modulus of rupture, and dynamic modulus of elasticity were measured as well as water absorption and density. Additionally, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) were …

In this study, double intercritical annealing was applied to modify the mechanical properties of 0.107%C-2.39%Mn-0.453%Si dual phase steel. The effects of the double intercritical annealing (DIA) method were investigated via microstructure observation and tensile test, and then compared with the single intercritical annealing (SIA) method. By increasing the intercritical annealing temperature, yield and tensile strengths increase while ductility decreases primarily due to the increase of martensite fraction. DIA leads to a slight reduction of the ferrite size and the martensite fraction regardless of the intercritical annealing temperature. Tensile results showed that DIA increases ductility without losing significant amount of strength. …

Rubber tree bark (RTB) is a biomass that consists of wood and rubber parts, with high volatile and ash contents. This research reports the utilization of RTB as a carbon source in Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking processes. RTB was mixed with coal at a ratio of 1:1 by weight, and heated at 1000℃ under an argon atmosphere for 1 h. The chars were brought to contact with Electric Arc Furnace slag (37.86 wt% Fe2O3) at 1550℃ for 15 min to investigate their interaction and compared to coal. Coal showed short slag foaming behavior with a foaming time of 4 min, …
