Application Of Ti/Ruo2-Iro2-Sno2-Sb2O5 Anode In Rural Drinking Water Disinfection, Jing-Ru Guo, Xue-Jiao Zhang, Shuai Liao, Xue-Ming Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Sodium hypochlorite disinfection has many advantages, including reliable operation, low cost, easily available raw materials. It is, therefore, suitable for disinfection of drinking water in remote rural areas. The service life and chlorine evolution efficiency of the anode are the main factors restricting the performance of the sodium hypochlorite generator. The special conditions of frequent shutdown and low electrolyte concentration in the rural drinking water application also put forward high requirements on the performance of the anode. In this study, Ti/RuO2-IrO2-SnO2-Sb2O5,a new-type and efficient chlorine evolution anode, was prepared by …

Plasma Treatment Of High-Density Polyethylene, Linear Low-Density Polyethylene, And Polyvinyl Chloride Geomembranes By Air And Oxygen, Merve Koca Uyar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

High-density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) geomembranes were treated with air and oxygen plasma. The purpose of air and oxygen plasma treatment of geomembrane surface is to increase the surface wettability of these materials, thereby increasing adhesive properties. Increasing adhesive properties enables a surface to be coated with a desired material with antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV resistant characteristics, without changing bulk material properties. To protect the geomembranes from oxidation degradation, UV degradation and biological degradation, it is important to increase the antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV resistant properties of geomembrane. Before and after the plasma treatments …

Furthermore, Cu(II) ion solution would impact the quenching activity with F-COF-PT3, and NaOH treated F-COF-PT3 has the 5.6 m2/g capacity of uptake CO2. Finally, the zeta potential and particle diameter of original and treated F-COF-PT3s …

Material And Topographically Optimized Thermal Dissipation For High-Performance Electronic Devices Utilizing Vapor Chambers, Derek Joseph Daniels

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Advances in materials science and engineering in the field of thermal transport and dissipation enable the use of higher-performance electronic devices that are smaller and generate more heat. Phase change thermal transport systems such as heat pipes and vapor chambers enable passive dissipation from devices that generate excessive heat without the need for actively pumped cooling systems. Properly designed vapor chamber enabled systems easily exceed the thermal conductivity of manufactured diamond at a small fraction of the cost.[1][2][3] While heat pipe phase change systems are generally one-dimensional with a limited cross section, vapor chambers are generally two-dimensional with a small …

Thermoelectric devices provide the means for direct conversion between heat and electricity. The device conversion efficiency, or performance, is directly related to the thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, of the working materials. Bismuth telluride alloys are the materials currently in use in most thermoelectric devices for near room temperature solid-state refrigeration and power conversion applications. The vast majority of publications in the literature on thermoelectricity report on investigations towards developing new materials with enhanced thermoelectric properties, however Bi2Te3 alloys have been used in thermoelectric devices for decades.

In this thesis, an investigation of crystallographic texturing on large …

Customizable Aptamer Transducer Network Designed For Feed-Forward Coupling, Tim Hachigian, Drew Lysne, Elton Graugnard, Jeunghoon Lee

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Solution-based biosensors that utilize aptamers have been engineered in a variety of formats to detect a range of analytes for both medical and environmental applications. However, since aptamers have fixed base sequences, incorporation of aptamers into DNA strand displacement networks for feed-forward signal amplification and processing requires significant redesign of downstream DNA reaction networks. We designed a novel aptamer transduction network that releases customizable output domains, which can then be used to initiate downstream strand displacement reaction networks without any sequence redesign of the downstream reaction networks. In our aptamer transducer (AT), aptamer input domains are independent of output domains …

Chitosan Graphene Composite Fabrication And Characterization For Treatment Of Harmful Algal Blooms And Toxins, Sarah Zetterholm

Master's Theses

Chitosan graphene composites were fabricated and characterized as a management strategy for harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by various species of cyanobacteria. These chitosan graphene materials were compared to previously studied chitosan graphene-oxide composites in both material properties and HAB treatment. In previous studies, adsorption of the cyanobacteria onto the surface of the composite materials has been observed. Investigations of the pure materials for these composites are also included in this study to determine whether removal is a result of charge interactions with the composite, or as an inherent property of the graphene or graphene oxide. Initial results suggest that …

Machine Learning For High-Fidelity Prediction Of Cement Hydration Kinetics In Blended Systems, Rachel Cook, Taihao Han, Alaina Childers, Cambria Ryckman, Kamal Khayat, Hongyan Ma, Jie Huang, Aditya Kumar

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), the most broadly utilized man-made material, has been scrutinized due to its contributions to global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Thus -- to mitigate CO2 emissions -- mineral additives have been promulgated as partial replacements for OPC. However, additives -- depending on their physiochemical characteristics -- can exert varying effects on OPC's hydration kinetics. Therefore -- in regards to more complex systems -- it is infeasible for semi-empirical kinetic models to reveal the underlying nonlinear composition-property (i.e., reactivity) relationships. In the past decade or so, machine learning (ML) has arisen as a promising, …

Makara Journal of Science

The emerging technology in biomedical engineering requires biocompatible materials, which are also referred to as biomaterials. For a material to be considered biocompatible, it should not interact with human tissues in a harmful way, and vice versa. Various properties of biocompatible materials, such as mechanical and optical properties, have to be considered for different biomedical applications. One of the most popular applications of biomaterials is for contact lenses. Hydrogels, specifically poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogels, are among the most popular ones in ophthalmologic applications, especially in soft contact lenses. This paper reviews the use of PHEMA hydrogels as one of the …
