Interstitial Silicon Ions In Rutile Tio2 Crystals, Eric M. Golden, Nancy C. Giles, Shan Yang, Larry E. Halliburton
Faculty Publications
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to identify a new and unique photoactive silicon-related point defect in single crystals of rutile TiO2. The importance of this defect lies in its assignment to interstitial silicon ions and the unexpected establishment of silicon impurities as a major hole trap in TiO2. Principal g values of this new S=1/2 center are 1.9159, 1.9377, and 1.9668 with principal axes along the [¯110],[001], and [110] directions, respectively. Hyperfine structure in the EPR spectrum shows the unpaired spin interacting equally with two Ti nuclei and unequally with two Si nuclei. These silicon …

During the Coptic period in Fayum Egypt, encaustic (i.e. wax) mummy portraits were painted onto wooden panels or linen and attached to the mummy trappings of the deceased. One such portrait, “32.6: The Bearded Man” (c. 170-180 AD), features an unidentified Roman-Egyptian displaying a purple clavi. The trace swath of purple in the portrait provides evidence as to the origins of the painting and the identity of the man. Nanoscale analysis of the pigment suggests a red organic material was color shifted using a metal salt to produce a “poor man’s purple” as opposed to the expensive murex purple traditionally …

Towards Molecular Modification Of Carbon Nanotube Junctions In Thin Film Transistors, Noelia Caloca, A. Nicole Chang, Kari Mclaughlin, David Estrada
College of Engineering Presentations
Carbon nanotube thin film transistors have recently been used on flexible and transparent substrates for applications in integrated circuits and display drivers. Such networks are of interest due to their relatively high carrier mobility and mechanical flexibility. However, the ION/IOFF ratio of these networks varies inversely with the carrier mobility, and advances in reducing the electrical and thermal resistance of nanotube junctions are needed to improve the device performance and reliability. The objective of this work is create a process to improve CNT TFT device performance by using 0-dimensional molecules to modify the physical properties of the …

Towards The Perfect Optical Fiber, John Ballato
Towards The Perfect Optical Fiber, John Ballato
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Optical fibers are being used in an ever more diverse array of applications today. Many of these modern applications are in high-power and, particularly, high power-per-unit-bandwidth systems where optical nonlinearities historically have not limited overall performance. Today, however, nominally weak effects, such as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), are restricting continued scaling to higher optical powers. To address these limitations, the optical fiber industry has focused on fiber geometry-related solutions such as large mode area (LMA) designs. However, since all linear and nonlinear optical phenomena are fundamentally materials-based in origin, this paper identifies material solutions to present and future performance limitations …

Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Nickel Based Alloys Via Spark Plasma Sintering, Somayeh Pasebani, Aniket K. Dutt, Jatuporn Burns, Indrajit Charit, Rajiv S. Mishra
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) nickel based alloys were developed via mechanical milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS) of Ni–20Cr powder with additional dispersion of 1.2 wt% Y2O3 powder. Furthermore, 5 wt% Al2O3 was added to Ni–20Cr–1.2Y2O3 to provide composite strengthening in the ODS alloy. The effects of milling times, sintering temperature, and sintering dwell time were investigated on both mechanical properties and microstructural evolution. A high number of annealing twins was observed in the sintered microstructure for all the milling times. However, longer milling time contributed to improved hardness and narrower …

Tip-Based Nanofabrication Of Arbitrary Shapes Of Graphene Nanoribbons For Device Applications, Huan Hu, Shouvik Banerjee, David Estrada, Rashid Bashir, William P. King
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have promising applications in future nanoelectronics, chemical sensing and electrical interconnects. Although there are quite a few GNR nanofabrication methods reported, a rapid and low-cost fabrication method that is capable of fabricating arbitrary shapes of GNRs with good-quality is still in demand for using GNRs for device applications. In this paper, we present a tip-based nanofabrication method capable of fabricating arbitrary shapes of GNRs. A heated atomic force microscope (AFM) tip deposits polymer nanowires atop a CVD-grown graphene surface. The polymer nanowires serve as an etch mask to define GNRs through one step of oxygen plasma etching …
Assessing Viscoelastic Properties Of Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms) Using Loading And Unloading Of The Macroscopic Compression Test, Mustafa Fincan
Assessing Viscoelastic Properties Of Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms) Using Loading And Unloading Of The Macroscopic Compression Test, Mustafa Fincan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mechanical properties were measured using custom-built compression test device. PDMS elastic modulus can be varied with the elastomer base to the curing agent ratio, i.e. by changing the cross-linking density. PDMS samples with different crosslink density in terms of their elastic modulus were measured. In this project the PDMS samples with the base/curing agent ratio ranging from 5:1 to 20:1 were tested. The elastic modulus varied with the amount of the crosslinker, and ranged from 0.8 MPa to 4.44 MPa. The compression device was modified by adding digital displacement gauges to measure the lateral strain of the sample, …

The elastic coefficients and mechanical properties (bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio) of Ti2Al(CxN1−x) continuous solid solutions for x from 0 to 1 are calculated using ab initio DFT methods on 4×4×1 supercell models. It is shown that the properties of these solid solutions do not vary linearly with x. Although the lattice constant c is almost constant for x≤0.5, a increases linearly. For x>0.5, c starts to increase with x while the rate of increase in a slows down. For x between 0.5 and 0.85, the elastic coefficients and the mechanical parameters show interesting dependence …

Noise Control By Structure And Material, Brian Tarling
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
An acoustic impedance testing tube is designed and constructed to test noise absorption properties of selected materials. The structure will be made to be convenient for demonstration purposes and real testing procedures while following ASTM E1050 standards as closely as possible. An engineering drawing as well as a 3D-‐CAD model of the structure is developed. Testing is conducted on selected materials; mainly ones that will allow obtained results to be compared to results found by other parties. Various sounds will be generated using Mathematical programming; the types of sound will include single frequency, wide band and narrow band noises. Microphones …
