Preparation And Lithium Storage Performance Of Sn-Snsb Nanoparticles, Yao Xiao, Jiao-Hong Wu, Qi Wang, Ling Huang, Jun-Tao Li, Shi-Gang Sun
Journal of Electrochemistry
Tin was widely studied as alternative anode material to carbon for lithium-ion batteries thanks to its much higher theoretical capacity. However, a pure tin electrode suffers severely from its poor cycleability due to mechanical fatigue caused by volume change during lithium insertion and extraction processes. Tin-based alloy may improve the cycleability property of tin electrode. In this article, we report facile synthesis of spherical Sn-SnSb nanopartciles using a simple solvent-thermal approach. It is amazing to find that the spherical Sn-SnSb nanoparticles can circumvent volume changes effectively during charge-discharge process. Electrochemical discharge/charge results show that the spherical Sn-SnSb nanoparticles electrode exhibits …
Electrochemical Fabrication Of Two-Dimensional Flower-Like Pt Nanostructures For Methanol Electrocatalytic Oxidation, Xia Wang, Jun Hu, Yong-Jun Li
Electrochemical Fabrication Of Two-Dimensional Flower-Like Pt Nanostructures For Methanol Electrocatalytic Oxidation, Xia Wang, Jun Hu, Yong-Jun Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Two-dimensional flower-like Pt nanostructures (2D FPNs) were fabricated on glassy carbon substrates by galvanostatical electrochemical technique. The electrolyte was the HAuCl4 + HClO4 aqueous solution without addition of any structure-directing organic reagent, which made as-prepared Pt nanostructures cleaner, exhibiting much higher reactivity. Scanning electron microscopic images revealed that 2D FPNs were spherical Pt nano-flowers constructed by the smallest building blocks, nano-leaves. The number density of spherical Pt nano-flowers can be tuned by controlling the electrodeposition time. High resolution transmission electron microscopic images indicated that each nano-leaf was formed by growing along Pt(111) direction. Electrocatalytic activities of as-prepared 2D …

High Sensitive Detection Of Cd(Ii) And Pb(Ii) Based On Antimony-Film Covered Pencil Core Electrodes, Shan Chen, Zhao-Yan Zheng, Yi-Min Fang, Li-Qing Zheng, Jian-Jun Sun
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this paper, a pencil core was used as the substrate for an antimony-film electrode for simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). With the deposition time of 180 s, the low limit of detection (LOD) for the electrode was determined to be 0.075·g?L-1 for Cd(II), while 0.13·g·L-1 for Pb(II) with good reproducibility in low pH solutions (pH = 2). The results show a much lower LOD than that of bismuth-film pencil core electrode. Finally, this antimony-film electrode was successfully applied to determine Cd(II) and Pb(II) in tap water.

Effecting Of Dissolved Oxygen On Microbial Fuel Cells Based On Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Chang-Li Cao, Li-Xiang Chen, Ran-Ran Wu, Ken-Lin Chang, Feng Zhao
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this work, the reaction between the electron shuttle secreted by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and anode was studied by measuring cyclic voltammogram and open circuit potential. The effect of dissolved oxygen on the oxidation reaction of anode was explored. It was demonstrated that the reaction was a diffusion-controlled and reversible process. The anode was a little affected when the dissolved oxygen of inocula was low (0 ~ 1.6 mg·L-1). The polarization curves showed that the current output of microbial fuel cells decreased 7% with the impact of dissolved oxygen.

Recent Progress In The Mechanistic Understanding Of Formic Acid Oxidation On Pt Electrode, Jie Xu, Dao-Chuan Jiang, Dong Mei, Zheng-Da He, Yan-Xia Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
This article reviews the recent progress in understanding of the mechanisms for formic acid oxidation on Pt electrode. There are two pathways for formic acid oxidation on Pt electrode: (1) Indirect Pathway through which HCOOH is oxidized to CO2 through COad intermediate. This pathway contributes only 1% of the total current; (2) Direct Pathway where HCOOH is oxidized directly to CO2. The results from IR Spectroscopy, single-crystal electrochemistry and DFT calculation all support that the bridge-bonded formate is neither the intermediate of direct pathway nor the precursor for COad formation in indirect pathway. Possible mechanism …

Preparation Of Pt-Tio2/Graphene Composites With High Catalytic Activity Towards Methanol Oxidation And Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Li Qi, Ying Yin, Wen-Guang Tu, Bing-Bing Wu, Zhao-Sheng Wang, Jian-Guo Liu, Jun Gu, Zhi-Gang Zou
Journal of Electrochemistry
A series of graphene-supported TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2/G) with different TiO2 contents were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method, and then the Pt-TiO2/G catalysts were successfully prepared by reducing Pt-precursor with microwave technique. Compared with Pt-G catalysts, the catalytic performance toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) of Pt-TiO2/G catalysts was improved due to the addition of TiO2. However, the excessive TiO2 would lead to a poor catalytic performance of Pt-TiO2/G catalysts because of the low electrical conductivity of TiO2.

A Sensitive And Label-Free Electrochemical Aptasensor Based On Signal Amplification Of Carbon Nanotubes, Chun-Yan Deng, Hui-Min Fan, Juan Xiang, Yuan-Jian Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
A label-free electrochemical sensing electrode for highly sensitive detection of adenosine was constructed based on the signal amplification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The change in the interfacial feature of the modified electrode was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Using [Ru(NH3)6]3+ as the signaling moiety, adenosine with concentrations as low as 0.027 nmol·L-1 can be selectively detected. Additionally, the fabrication of this present aptasensor was simple, time-saving and cost-effective. Compared with other reported aptasensors, the proposed aptasensor had advantages of excellent sensitivity, selectivity and simplicity, which plays a potential role in development of aptasensor.

Effects Of Thermal Boundary Conditions During Finite Element Modeling Of Physical Vapor Transport, Wade Luhman
Effects Of Thermal Boundary Conditions During Finite Element Modeling Of Physical Vapor Transport, Wade Luhman
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Physical vapor transport (PVT) is a material processing method commonly used to produce different types of semiconductor materials. Computer modeling of PVT is important to understand the fundamentals of the processing method. Due to the large amount of computer processing power and storage needed to solve the computer models many of the previously solved simulations have been simplified to efficiently utilize computer usage. Previous PVT computer simulations of mercurous chloride (Hg2Cl2) have assumed constant temperature profiles on the source and crystal substrate for simplicity. These simulations were performed using the FIDAP computational fluid dynamics software package. In this research the …

Oxidation-Resistant, Solution-Processed Plasmonic Ni Nanochain-SioX (X < 2) Selective Solar Thermal Absorbers, Xiaobai Yu, Xiaoxin Wang, Qinglin Zhang, Juchuan Li, Jifeng Liu
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Metal oxidation at high temperatures has long been a challenge in cermet solar thermal absorbers, which impedes the development of atmospherically stable, high-temperature, high-performance concentrated solar power (CSP) systems. In this work, we demonstrate solution-processed Ni nanochain-SiOx (x < 2) and Ni nanochain-SiO2 selective solar thermal absorbers that exhibit a strong anti-oxidation behavior up to 600 °C in air. The thermal stability is far superior to previously reported Ni nanoparticle-Al2O3 selective solar thermal absorbers, which readily oxidize at 450 °C. The SiOx (x < 2) and SiO2 matrices are derived from hydrogen silsesquioxane and tetraethyl orthosilicate precursors, respectively, which comprise Si-O cage-like …
Single Cuo Nanowires Electrical Properties And Application On Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting, Junnan Wu
Single Cuo Nanowires Electrical Properties And Application On Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting, Junnan Wu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Charge transport in single crystal, p type copper oxide (CuO) nanowires (NWs) was studied through temperature based (120 K – 400 K) current-voltage (I-V) measurements of 2-terminal single NW devices. Individual CuO NWs with an average diameter of 220 nm were attached to Au electrodes 2.5 µm apart, using a dielectrophoresis method. I-V curves showed a transition from linear behavior at low bias to strong power law dependence (I ~ Va) at high bias, which can be attributed to space charge limited current (SCLC) mechanism. At low electrical fields (< 0.89 × 103 V·cm-1), the number of …

Optical Resonators And Fiber Tapers As Transducers For Detection Of Nanoparticles And Bio-Molecules, Huzeyfe Yilmaz
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In recent years, detection of biological interactions on single molecule level has aspired many researchers to investigate several optical, chemical, electrical and mechanical sensing tools. Among these tools, toroidal optical resonators lead the way in detection of the smallest particle/molecule with the real time measurements. In this work, bio-sensing capabilities of toroidal optical resonators are investigated. Bio-sensing is realized via measuring the analyte-antigen interaction while the antigen is immobilized through a novel functionalization method.
Not long ago, detection of single nanoparticles using optical resonators has been accomplished however the need for cost-effective and practical transducers demands simpler tools. A tapered …
Three Dimensional Transient Asymmetric Flowfields In Physical Vapor Transport, Joseph Dobmeier
Three Dimensional Transient Asymmetric Flowfields In Physical Vapor Transport, Joseph Dobmeier
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Physical Vapor Transport is a manufacturing process used to produce single crystals of semiconductor materials such as mercurous chloride (Hg2Cl2). In the past this time-varying process has been studied with numerical simulation by considering three dimensional flow using an axi-symmetric two dimensional model or by restricting the simulation to asymmetric two dimensional flow and dropping the assumption of axi-symmetry from the model. It is generally agreed that neither of these methods accurately represent the true behavior of the process. The purpose of this research was to extend the asymmetric two dimensional model to three dimensions thereby obtaining a solution which …

A Non-Destructive Method For Measuring The Mechanical Properties Of Ultrathin Films Prepared By Atomic Layer Deposition, Qinglin Zhang, Xingcheng Xiao, Yang-Tse Cheng, Mark W. Verbrugge
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The mechanical properties of ultrathin films synthesized by atomic layer deposition (ALD) are critical for the liability of their coated devices. However, it has been a challenge to reliably measure critical properties of ALD films due to the influence from the substrate. In this work, we use the laser acoustic wave (LAW) technique, a non-destructive method, to measure the elastic properties of ultrathin Al2O3 films by ALD. The measured properties are consistent with previous work using other approaches. The LAW method can be easily applied to measure the mechanical properties of various ALD thin films for multiple …

Surgical Adhesive From Mussel Mimetic Polymer, Jenna Desousa, Cori Jenkins, Jonathan Wilker
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Injuries involving damaged tissues are currently repaired through an invasive technique involving the use of screws, plates and sutures as support, which can damage these tissues. The biomedical field currently lacks an adhesive that can replace harmful implants. A surgical adhesive can provide a quick and easy alternative, which will minimize the risk of damaging healthy tissue in surgery. Inspiration for such materials can be found by looking at marine mussels as they are able to stick to nearly any surface, even in wet environments. Marine mussels affix themselves to different surfaces using adhesive plaques consisting of various proteins. Polymer …

Investigation Of The Performance Of Different Types Of Zirconium Microstructures Under Extreme Irradiation Conditions, Eric M. Acosta, Osman J. El-Atwani
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The safe and continued operation of the US nuclear power plants requires improvement of the radiation resistant properties of materials used in nuclear reactors. Zirconium is a material of particular interest due to its use in fuel cladding. Studies performed on other materials have shown that grain boundaries can play a significant role on the radiation resistant properties of a material. Thus, the focus of our research is to investigate the performance of different zirconium microstructures under irradiation conditions similar to those in commercial nuclear reactors. Analysis of the surface morphology of zirconium both pre- and post-irradiation was conducted with …
Building Predictive Chemistry Models, Christopher Browne, Nicolas Onofrio, Alejandro Strachan
Building Predictive Chemistry Models, Christopher Browne, Nicolas Onofrio, Alejandro Strachan
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations allow for sophisticated modeling of chemical interactions, but the extreme computational cost makes it inviable for large scale applications. Molecular dynamics models, specifically ReaxFF, can model much larger simulations with greater speed, but with lesser accuracy. The accuracy of ReaxFF can be improved by comparing predictions of both methods and tuning ReaxFF’s parameters. Molecular capabilities of ReaxFF were gauged by simulating copper complexes in water over a 200 ps range, and comparing energy predictions against ReaxFF. To gauge solid state capabilities, volumetric strain was applied to simulated copper bulk and the strain response functions used …
Biological Implications Of Satellite Cells For Scaffold-Based Muscle Regenerative Engineering, Maggie R. Del Ponte, Charter Chain, Meng Deng Dr., Feng Yue Dr., Shihuan Kuang Dr.
Biological Implications Of Satellite Cells For Scaffold-Based Muscle Regenerative Engineering, Maggie R. Del Ponte, Charter Chain, Meng Deng Dr., Feng Yue Dr., Shihuan Kuang Dr.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Satellite cells are anatomically localized along the surface of muscle fibers and have been regarded as a population of muscle-specific progenitors that are responsible for muscle regeneration. In response to muscle injuries, satellite cells are activated to enter the cell cycle, then proliferate and differentiate into mature muscle cells to regenerate damaged myofibers. Unfortunately, this natural repair mechanism is interrupted in conditions such as muscle degenerative diseases or volumetric muscle loss. The function of stem cells is regulated by signals from their local microenvironment which is called the stem cell niche. Current satellite cell-based strategies such as direct cell transplantation …
Fiber Length And Orientation In Long Carbon Fiber Thermoplastic Composites, Imad Hanhan, Connor Sullivan, Bhisham Sharma, Michael Sangid
Fiber Length And Orientation In Long Carbon Fiber Thermoplastic Composites, Imad Hanhan, Connor Sullivan, Bhisham Sharma, Michael Sangid
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Carbon fiber composites have become popular in aerospace applications because of their lightweight yet strong material properties. The injection molding process can be used to produce discontinuous fiber composites using less time and resources than traditional methods, thereby broadening carbon fiber composites’ applications in different industries. Utilization of longer fibers offers more load carrying capability and superior strength properties for injected molded composites. Since the fiber length and the orientation distribution in Long Fiber Thermoplastics (LFTs) directly affects LFT composites’ material properties, there is a need to study the microstructure of LFTs and characterize fiber length and orientation distributions. Therefore, …

Polymer-Based Thermoelectric Devices, Stuart W. Hilsmier, Edward P. Tomlinson, Bryan Boudouris
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Currently, over 50% of all energy generated in the US is lost as waste heat, and thermoelectric generators offer a promising means to recoup some of this energy, if their efficiency is improved. While organic thermoelectric materials lack the efficiency of their inorganic counterparts, they are composed of highly abundant resources and have low temperature processing conditions. Recently, a new class of redox-active polymers, radical polymers, has exhibited high electrical conductivity in an entirely amorphous medium. In addition, these radical polymers have a simple synthetic scheme and can be highly tunable to provide desired electrical properties. In this study, the …
Finite Element Analysis Of Bolted Connections Under Fire, Ke Liu, Qiaqia Zhu, Amit H. Varma
Finite Element Analysis Of Bolted Connections Under Fire, Ke Liu, Qiaqia Zhu, Amit H. Varma
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Over the course of human history, fire disasters are one of the major catastrophes that causes loss of lives and properties. In order to ensure building safety against fire, civil engineers seek to understand the behavior of structures at high temperatures. Moreover, they need to study the behavior of bolted connections, given the important role it plays in steel structures. Sarraj (2007) proposed a plate-bearing computational model used to describe this behavior; however, it has never been experimentally verified. Prior to this specific project, a series of single-bolted connection tests at 400°C and 600°C were conducted in the Bowen Laboratory …
Development Of A Nanomanufacturing Process To Produce Atomically Thin Black Phosphorus, Andrew Stephens, Zhe Luo, Xianfan Xu
Development Of A Nanomanufacturing Process To Produce Atomically Thin Black Phosphorus, Andrew Stephens, Zhe Luo, Xianfan Xu
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Atomically thin black phosphorus (phosphorene) has both unique and desirable properties that differ from bulk black phosphorus. Unlike graphene, phosphorene has a bandgap, which makes it potentially useful for applications in the next generation of transistors. Large-scale applications of phosphorene, like other 2D materials, are limited by current production methods. The most common method of making phosphorene is mechanical exfoliation, which can only produce small and irregular quantities. In this work we investigate a top-down method of producing phosphorene by using a scanning ultrafast laser to thin black phosphorus flakes. Because the bandgap of phosphorene increases as layers are removed, …

Molecular Exploration Tool, Weiyi Cao, Nicolas Onofrio, Alejandro Strachan
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Density Functional Theory (DFT) which is based on quantum mechanics theory has been broadly used to compute the energy and the structure of molecules and solids. However, the DFT method is limited when running calculations for a large system and only thousands of atoms can be solved. Alternatively, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation can be used to investigate the properties of the atomic system for large systems in the classical mechanics approximation. When running the MD simulation, the electronic structure is approximated by Force Fields (FF) which can be parametrized against DFT calculations. Nevertheless, the accuracy of the MD results and …

Materials that are impact resistant enough for personal protection in sports, transport, and combat are not also lightweight, strong, tough, and impact tolerant. Nature can provide inspiration for novel materials that can meet these needs. The hierarchical composite of the stomatopod’s, or mantis shrimp’s, dactyl club has been shown to have high impact resistance and damage tolerance due to its helicoidal fiber reinforcement(1,2). Analyzing helicoidal composites of different pitch angles (angles between adjacent rows of fibers) under quasi-static, displacement-controlled loading has provided insights into the fracture mechanisms of the composite structure and how they affect the macroscopic properties of the …

Electron microscopy has a crucial role in the field of materials science and structural biology. Although electron microscopy gives lots of important results and findings, some additional simulations and image processing/reconstruction is required to get more information from the data that are collected from the experiments. For this purpose, researchers are using IMOD1 and QSTEM2 for electron microscopy analysis and simulation. IMOD is a set of programs used for tomographic reconstruction and 3D visualization and QSTEM is used for quantitative simulations of TEM and STEM images. However, IMOD and QSTEM are hard to install or use for beginners …

Crystalline films grown epitaxially on substrates consisting of a different crystalline material are of considerable interest in optoelectronic devices and the semiconductor industry. One way to progress in this field is to develop simulation tools based on specially designed numerical method. A nanoHUB simulation tool was developed based on the phase field theory, which considers the propagation of dislocations inside the crystalline film. However, the current tool needs several improvements to be more realistic and user-friendly. First, the inputs of the simulation tool are adjusted so that the user can use this tool directly without any additional calculation. The output …

Higher melting point (3695K), lower sputtering yield and most importantly, lower in-bulk, and co-deposit retention at elevated temperature makes tungsten (W) as a potential candidate for plasma-facing component (PFC) in the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER)-divertor. Helium ion (He+) bombardment on W can cause wide variety of microstructural evolution, such as dislocation loops, helium holes/bubbles and fibre-form nanostructures (Fuzz) etc. In this work, 100 eV He+ ion irradiation, at temperature ranges from 500°C to 1000°C, will be performed on mechanically polished mirror like W surfaces. The surface modification and compositional analysis, due to ion irradiation, will be …

Microstructure Development Of Granular System During Compaction, Chen Shang, Marcial Gonzalez
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Granular materials is the second most manipulated material in the industry today. They are easy to transport and more and more newly developed materials cannot stand the process of traditional casting, like energetic materials and bio-materials, but will survive the powder compaction process. Having a better understanding of the microstructure development of granular systems during compaction process, especially for particles that will heavily deform under loading, will give an insight of how to better process the powders to produce materials with overall better performance comparing to bulk materials. The main theory and mechanism applied are Hertz law and nonlocal contact …
