Sputter Deposition Of Thin-Film Capacitors Onto Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic Substrates, Jack Murray

Masters Theses

"Single layer thin film capacitor structures were fabricated on the surface of low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrates using sputter deposition. The capacitor structures had areas between ~10⁴ µm² to ~10⁶ µm² and featured ~200 nm Al or Pt electrodes with 150-1500 nm Al₂O₃ dielectric layers. Impedance analysis and current-voltage testing were carried out to determine the effect of electrode material and dielectric thickness upon capacitor performance. Capacitance values for devices with Al electrodes ranged from ~10 to ~700 pF, depending on capacitor area and dielectric thickness, and the fit to expected values was better than devices with Pt or …

Plastic Strain Accommodation And Acoustic Emission During Melting Of Embedded Indium Particles In Aluminum, Michael M. Kuba Jan 2012

Plastic Strain Accommodation And Acoustic Emission During Melting Of Embedded Indium Particles In Aluminum, Michael M. Kuba

Masters Theses

"Melting of micron-sized (0.2 to 3 µm diameter) indium particles embedded in an aluminum matrix was discovered to produce acoustic emission. Melting of embedded immiscible particles produces a pure dilation during the phase transformation and has no long-range diffusion field to control the speed of transformation. It was found that acoustic emission can no longer be considered as a criterion of displacive transformations and that melting of micron-sized embedded particles is strain energy controlled. Acoustic emission was confirmed to result from the rapid relaxation of aluminum around indium particles embedded on grain boundaries. Prismatic punching of dislocation loops is proposed …

Cerium-Based Conversion Coatings On Cast Aluminum 380 And 413 Alloys, Ci Lin Jan 2012

Cerium-Based Conversion Coatings On Cast Aluminum 380 And 413 Alloys, Ci Lin

Masters Theses

"This investigation focused on the deposition and characterization of cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCCs) on cast aluminum alloys. Previous research has shown that CeCCs are viable alternatives to chromate conversion on high strength alloys such as 2024-T3 and 7075-T6. For the casting alloys such as 380 and 413, the presence of Si affects the composition and stability of the native oxide, which means that pretreatment plays an important role for the coating deposition. This thesis consists of two papers that describe the results of the study.

The first paper reports the effect of the final rinsing temperature before coating deposition on …

The Quantification Of The Fly Ash Adsorption Capacity For The Purpose Of Characterization And Use In Concrete, Zeyad Tareq Ahmed Jan 2012

The Quantification Of The Fly Ash Adsorption Capacity For The Purpose Of Characterization And Use In Concrete, Zeyad Tareq Ahmed

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Fly ash has been shown to be an effective replacement for portland cement in concrete mixtures. However, many fly ash materials contain unburned carbon from the combustion process. Unburned carbon in fly ash adsorbs air entraining admixtures (AEAs) reducing their effectiveness in providing a specified air void system in concrete materials. Measurement tools and methods for characterization of the adsorption properties of fly ash materials are necessary for beneficial use of fly ash materials in concrete. In this research, two methods were developed to measure and quantify the adsorption capacity AEAs on fly ash materials. The first method is the …

Electric-Field-Induced Interfacial Instabilities Of A Soft Elastic Membrane Confined Between Viscous Layers, Mohar Dey, Dipankar Bandyopadhyay, Ashutosh Sharma, Shizhi Qian, Sang Woo Joo

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

We explore the electric-field-induced interfacial instabilities of a trilayer composed of a thin elastic film confined between two viscous layers. A linear stability analysis (LSA) is performed to uncover the growth rate and length scale of the different unstable modes. Application of a normal external electric field on such a configuration can deform the two coupled elastic-viscous interfaces either by an in-phase bending or an antiphase squeezing mode. The bending mode has a long-wave nature, and is present even at a vanishingly small destabilizing field. In contrast, the squeezing mode has finite wave-number characteristics and originates only beyond a threshold …

Technical Feasibility Of Storage On Large Dish Stirling Systems, Charles E. Andraka, K Scott Rawlinson, Nathan P. Siegel Jan 2012

Technical Feasibility Of Storage On Large Dish Stirling Systems, Charles E. Andraka, K Scott Rawlinson, Nathan P. Siegel

Faculty Journal Articles

Dish-Stirling systems have been demonstrated to provide high-efficiency solar-only electrical generation, holding the world record at 31.25%. This high efficiency results in a system with a high possibility of meeting the DOE SunShot goal of $0.06/kWh. Current dish-Stirling systems do not incorporate thermal storage. For the next generation of non-intermittent and cost-competitive solar power plants, we propose a thermal energy storage system that combines latent (phase-change) energy transport and latent energy storage in order to match the isothermal input requirements of Stirling engines while also maximizing the exergetic efficiency of the entire system. This report takes an initial look at …

High Pressure Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction Studies Of Superprotonic Transitions In Phosphate Based Solid Acids, Juan Daniel Hermosillo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Certain phosphate based solid acids, such as CsH2PO4 and RbH2PO4, have been shown to exhibit an abrupt, several-order-of-magnitude increase in their proton conductivity when heated above a temperature threshold. This so called superprotonic behavior allows the above-mentioned materials to function as fuel cell electrolytes at temperatures between 150C and 300C, a remarkable application that attracted significant interest especially from the automobile industry. Yet, the microscopic structures and dynamic mechanisms responsible for this behavior are not fully understood. In fact, until very recently, the very nature of the superprotonic behavior has been debate, with some groups attributing the steep proton enhancement …

Applications Of Density Functional Theory In Materials Science And Engineering, Manuel Alvarado

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Density Functional Theory (DFT) is a powerful tool that can be used to model various systems in materials science. Our research applies DFT to two problems of interest. First, an organic/inorganic complex dye system known as a Mayan pigment is modeled to determine chemical binding sites, verifying each model with physical data such as UV/Vis spectra. Preliminary studies on palygorskite-based mayan pigments (mayacrom blue, mayacrom purple) show excellent agreement with experimental studies when using a dimer dye geometry binding with tetrahedrally-coordinated aluminum impurity sites in palygorksite. This approach is applied to a sepiolite-based organic/inorganic dye system using thioindigo attached to …

Development Of A Multi-Material, Multi-Technology Fdm System For Process Improvement Experimentation, David Espalin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Over the last three decades, developments within the area of Additive Manufacturing (AM) have resulted in novel technologies capable of producing highly customized, complex part geometries in a fraction of the lead time required by traditional manufacturing methods (e.g., injection molding, metal casting). In particular, fused deposition modeling (FDM), a material extrusion AM process, can produce parts using production-grade thermoplastics like acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polycarbonate, and polyetherimide. Additionally, non-commercial materials (e.g., polycaprolactone, ceramic loaded polymers, carbon nanotube loaded polymers) have been processed using FDM in part to demonstrate the potential diversity in material selection.

Recently, a myriad of personal 3D …

Rapid prototyping (RP) technologies that were originally designed to build prototypes may now be required to build functional end-use products. To carry out the transition, from RP to rapid manufacturing (RM), the available materials utilized in RP must provide the performance required for RM. The …

Oxidation Of Borides And Carbides With Y2o3 And Ta Additions, Salvador Manuel Rodriguez Jan 2012

Oxidation Of Borides And Carbides With Y2o3 And Ta Additions, Salvador Manuel Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The study presented here describes an investigation of an oxidation scale of a fully-sintered Y2O3-ZrB2-TiC composite exposed in air at 1173K. Upon oxidation of the boride/carbide, a ZrO2-TiO2 was expected to form similar to the ZrO2-SiO2 dual scale of an oxidized ZrB2-SiC. The 47wt% Y2O3-38wt%ZrB2-16wt%TiC composite formed a dual scale consisting primarily of an Y2O3-ZrO2-TiC inner scale with an outer scale of ZrO2-TiO2-Y2O3.

The samples oxidized with a parabolic layer growth allowing the calculation of the effective diffusion coefficient indicating that the oxidation was controlled by oxygen ingress through primarily the ZrO2-Y2O3 phase. The oxygen potential between the inner layer …

Extreme Strain Localization And Sliding Friction In Physically Associating Polymer Gels, Kendra Erk, Jeffrey D. Martin, Y. Thomas Hu, Kenneth R. Shull Jan 2012

Extreme Strain Localization And Sliding Friction In Physically Associating Polymer Gels, Kendra Erk, Jeffrey D. Martin, Y. Thomas Hu, Kenneth R. Shull

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Model physically associating gels deformed in shear over a wide range of reduced rates displayed evidence of strain localization. The non-linear stress responses and inhomogeneous velocity profiles observed during shear rheometry coupled with particle tracking velocimetry were associated with the occurrence of rate-dependent, banding and fracture-like responses in the gel. Scaling law analysis from traditional sliding friction studies suggests that at the molecular level, deformation is confined to a shear zone with thickness comparable to the gel’s mesh size, the smallest structurally relevant length scale in the gel.

Shear And Dilational Interfacial Rheology Of Surfactant-Stabilized Droplets, Kendra Erk, Jeffrey D. Martin, Jonathan T. Schwalbe, Frederick R. Phelan Jr., Steven D. Hudson Jan 2012

Shear And Dilational Interfacial Rheology Of Surfactant-Stabilized Droplets, Kendra Erk, Jeffrey D. Martin, Jonathan T. Schwalbe, Frederick R. Phelan Jr., Steven D. Hudson

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A new measurement method is suggested that is capable of probing the shear and dilational interfacial rheological responses of small droplets, those of size comparable to real emulsion applications. Freely suspended aqueous droplets containing surfactant and non-surface-active tracer particles are transported through a rectangular microchannel by the plane Poiseuille flow of the continuous oil phase. Optical microscopy and high-speed imaging record the shape and internal circulation dynamics of the droplets. Measured circulation velocities are coupled with theoretical descriptions of the droplet dynamics in order to determine the viscous (Boussinesq) and elastic (Marangoni) interfacial effects. A new Marangoni-induced stagnation point is …

Multiscale Simulation Of Laser Ablation And Processing Of Semiconductor Materials, Lalit Shokeen Jan 2012

Multiscale Simulation Of Laser Ablation And Processing Of Semiconductor Materials, Lalit Shokeen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We present a model of laser-solid interactions in silicon based on an empirical potential developed under conditions of strong electronic excitations. The parameters of the interatomic potential depends on the temperature of the electronic subsystem Te, which is directly related to the density of the electron-hole pairs and hence the number of broken bonds. We analyze the dynamics of this potential as a function of electronic temperature Te and lattice temperature Tion. The potential predicts phonon spectra in good agreement with finite-temperature densityfunctional theory, including the lattice instability induced by the high electronic excitations. For 25fs pulse, a wide range …

Cold drawn eutectoid steel wires have been widely used for a variety of applications, such as suspension bridges, steel cords for automobile tires, and springs. Much research has been done to increase their mechanical strength. With advances in modern production technology, both the drawing speed and the quality of drawn steels have been enhanced. After a careful literature survey, it is obvious that some issues are still controversial. As Y.S. Yang, J.G. Bae and C.G. Park mentioned, the lamellar spacing, thickness and volume fraction of cementites have all reached the nanometer regime, and the conventional theory is not enough to …

Novel Design Of Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Electrodes And Membranes For Fuel Cells And Energy Storage, Xin Su Jan 2012

Novel Design Of Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Electrodes And Membranes For Fuel Cells And Energy Storage, Xin Su

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

A novel electrochemical method to generate nm-scale bubbles at the tips of CNTs can temporarily block the membrane. A 92% blocking efficiency is achieved when the bubbles are stabilized in 30-60 nm diameter „wells‟ at the tips of CNTs. This well is formed by the electrochemical oxidation of the conductive CNTs partially into the polymer matrix of the membrane. Meanwhile, the nanoscale bubbles can be removed with 0.004 atm pressure to recover the transport through the CNT membrane. The CNT membrane with nanoscale bubble valve system was used to demonstrate electrochemical energy storage.

Uniform ultrathin Pt films were electrodeposited onto …

Study on nanoparticle additives in multiphase systems (liquid, polymer) are of immense interest in developing new product applications. Critical challenges for nanoparticle additives include their synthesis, formulation and characterization. These challenges are addressed in three application areas: nanofluids for engine lubrication, ultrathin nanocomposites for optical devices, and nanoparticle size distribution characterization.

Nanoparticle additives in oligomer mixtures can be used to develop extended temperature range motor oils. A model system includes poly(α-olefin) based oligomers with a modest fraction of poly(dimethylsiloxane) oligomers along with graphite as nanoparticle additive. Partition coefficients of each oligomer are determined since the oligomer mixture phase separated at …

Understanding Degradation And Lithium Diffusion In Lithium Ion Battery Electrodes, Juchuan Li Jan 2012

Understanding Degradation And Lithium Diffusion In Lithium Ion Battery Electrodes, Juchuan Li

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Lithium-ion batteries with higher capacity and longer cycle life than that available today are required as secondary energy sources for a wide range of emerging applications. In particular, the cycling performance of several candidate materials for lithium-ion battery electrodes is insufficient because of the fast capacity fading and short cycle life, which is mainly a result of mechanical degradation.

This dissertation mainly focuses on the issue of mechanical degradation in advanced lithium-ion battery electrodes. Thin films of tin electrodes were studied where we observed whisker growth as a result of electrochemical cycling. These whiskers bring safety concerns because they may …

Additions of Nb, V, and N increased the yield strength from 1120 MPa to 1310 MPa while decreased the room temperature charpy V notch (CVN) toughness from 20 J to four Joules. The addition of Co to cast 17-4 PH steel enhanced the yield strength and CVN toughness from 1140 MPa to 1290 MPa and from 3.7 J to 5.5 J, respectively. In the base 17-4 PH steel, an increase in …

Hollow Hydroxyapatite Microspheres As Devices For Controlled Delivery Of Proteins And As Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering, Hailuo Fu Jan 2012

Hollow Hydroxyapatite Microspheres As Devices For Controlled Delivery Of Proteins And As Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering, Hailuo Fu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Hollow HA microspheres were prepared by converting Li₂O-CaO-B₂O₃ glass microspheres in a K₂HPO₄ solution. Process parameters, such as reaction temperature (25°C-60°C) and concentration of the phosphate solution (0.02-0.25 M) significantly influenced the microstructure of the hollow HA microspheres. Microspheres with the largest hollow core size were obtained at lower temperature or with low K₂HPO₄ concentration. In comparison, microspheres with high surface area (~140 m²/g) were obtained at higher K₂HPO₄ concentration (0.25 M). Upon heat treatment (up to 900°C), the surface area of the hollow HA microspheres decreased (from ~100 m²/g to ~2 m²/g), and the rupture strength increased (from ~11 …
