High Performance Piezoelectric Materials And Devices For Multilayer Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic Based Microfluidic Systems, Wenli Zhang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The incorporation of active piezoelectric elements and fluidic components into micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) is of great interest for the development of sensors, actuators, and integrated systems used in microfluidics. Low temperature cofired ceramics (LTCC), widely used as electronic packaging materials, offer the possibility of manufacturing highly integrated microfluidic systems with complex 3-D features and various co-firable functional materials in a multilayer module. It would be desirable to integrate high performance lead zirconate titanate (PZT) based ceramics into LTCC-based MEMS using modern thick film and 3-D packaging technologies. The challenges for fabricating functional LTCC/PZT devices are: 1) formulating piezoelectric compositions which …

Low temperature epitaxy of Ge quantum dots on Si (100) - (2×1) by femtosecond pulsed laser deposition under femtosecond laser excitation was investigated. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction and atomic force microscopy were used to analyze the growth mode and morphology. Epitaxial growth was achieved at ∼70 °C by using femtosecond laser excitation of the substrate. A purely electronic mechanism of enhanced surface diffusion of the Ge adatoms is proposed. © 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3537813]

Lithographically defined microporous templates in conjunction with the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique enable remarkable control of complex novel nested nanotube structures. So far three-dimensional control of physical process parameters has not been fully realized with high precision resolution, and requires optimization in order to achieve a wider range of potential applications. Furthermore, the combination of composite insulating oxide layers alternating with semiconducting layers and metals can provide various types of novel applications and eventually provide unique and advanced levels of multifunctional nanoscale devices. Semiconducting TiO2 nanotubes have potential applications in photovoltaic devices. The combination of nanostructured semiconducting materials …
Thermo-Physical Properties Measurement And Steel - Ceramic Shell Interactions In Investment Casting, Chirag Mahimkar
Thermo-Physical Properties Measurement And Steel - Ceramic Shell Interactions In Investment Casting, Chirag Mahimkar
Masters Theses
"Investment casting is a process in which a ceramic shell is prepared on a wax or foam pattern. The wax is melted out or the foam is burnt out and the shell is sintered to have sufficient strength to withstand casting conditions. The investment casting process is very important as it produces near net shape castings which reduce the need for subsequent operations of castings like machining etc. Investment casting shells are subjected to a number of heating cycles during pattern removal, firing, preheating before pouring and finally during solidification. The thermo-physical properties of the shell play an important role …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The on-going interest in thermoelectric (TE) materials, in the form of bulk and films, motivates investigation of materials that exhibit low thermal conductivity and good electrical conductivity. Such materials are phonon-glass electron-crystals (PGEC), and the multi-component type-I clathrate Ba8Ga16Ge30 is in this category. This work reports the first investigation of Ba8Ga16Ge30 films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD).
This dissertation details the in-situ growth of polycrystalline type-I clathrate Ba8Ga16Ge30 thin-films by pulsed laser ablation. Films deposited using conventional laser ablation produced films that contained a …
Effect Of Nickel On Castability Of Chromium Molybdenum Steel & The Dynamic Fracture Toughness Of Hy-130, Abhilash Dash
Effect Of Nickel On Castability Of Chromium Molybdenum Steel & The Dynamic Fracture Toughness Of Hy-130, Abhilash Dash
Masters Theses
"The fill lengths of Ni alloyed Cr-Mo steels obtained from fluidity studies (Paper 1) varied linearly with superheat. A 5% Ni steel showed a maximum fill length compared to other steels tested. Ni decreased the liquidus, solidus, and dendritic coherency temperature, but it did not have any significant effect on volume fraction (0.27-0.31) of the solid phase at the dendrite coherency point. The filling time obtained experimentally at 150 C⁰ superheat for 5% Ni steel (HY 130) was close to 1.4 s. For similar conditions, the predicted fill time using a Magmasoft model was close to 1.9 s. Modeling results …
Crack Formation In Investment Casting Ceramic Shells, W. A. Everhart
Crack Formation In Investment Casting Ceramic Shells, W. A. Everhart
Masters Theses
"This thesis is a collection of papers that discuss shell cracking in investment casting during pattern removal. The application of rigid polymeric foam for large investment casting patterns with complex geometries can improve the dimensional tolerances and the surface quality of the casting. However, these pattern materials have a tendency to promote crack formation in investment casting shells during pattern removal by firing.
The first two papers discuss the factors affecting shell cracking and methods to prevent it. Experimental methods were combined with finite element modeling to predict stress in the shell. A 3D nonlinear finite element model was developed …

Partially Halogenated Acenes And Heteroacenes For Organic Electronics, Balaji Purushothaman
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Inorganic materials have dominated electronic applications such as photovoltaic cells, thin film transistors (TFTs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs). However developments in the field of organic electronics over the past three decades have enabled the use of organic materials in these devices. While significant improvements have been made to improve their electronic properties there are several road blocks towards commercial application. One of the significant obstacles is the poor charge carrier mobility associated with organic semiconductors processed by well established printing methods. The goal of my research project is to improve the charge carrier mobility of solution cast films of …

The Effect Of Cr, Si And B On The Oxidation Behavior On Three Nb-Based Alloys, David Alvarez
The Effect Of Cr, Si And B On The Oxidation Behavior On Three Nb-Based Alloys, David Alvarez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Nb-based alloys are of particular interest to replace the current Ni-based superalloys for high-temperature structural applications. One important limitation to improve the efficiency of gas-turbine engines is the temperature limit of current materials being used. By allowing the temperature to increase, the efficiency will increase. Nb-based alloys have high melting points and adequate mechanical properties but the oxidation resistance is still inadequate.
This research focuses on the oxidation behavior of three Nb-based alloys to study the effect of Cr and Si variation and look at the effect of Boron. Boron can form a glassy borosilicate which is viscous at high …

Rate-Dependent Stiffening And Strain Localization In Physically Associating Solutions, Kendra Erk, Kenneth R. Shull
Rate-Dependent Stiffening And Strain Localization In Physically Associating Solutions, Kendra Erk, Kenneth R. Shull
School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Model physically associating solutions of acrylic triblock copolymer molecules in a midblock-selective solvent displayed non-linear strain-stiffening behavior which transitioned to rapid strain softening during shear start-up experiments at reduced rates spanning almost four orders of magnitude. Softening was believed to result from the shear-induced formation of highly localized regions of deformation in the macromolecular network. This behavior was accurately captured by a model that incorporated the strain energy and relaxation behavior of individual network strands in the solution. Flow curves predicted from the model were non-monotonic, consistent with the onset of flow instabilities at high shear rates. The non-linear stress …

Solution Phase And Membrane Immobilized Iron-Based Free Radical Reactions: Fundamentals And Applications For Water Treatment, Scott Romak Lewis
Solution Phase And Membrane Immobilized Iron-Based Free Radical Reactions: Fundamentals And Applications For Water Treatment, Scott Romak Lewis
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Membrane-based separation processes have been used extensively for drinking water purification, wastewater treatment, and numerous other applications. Reactive membranes synthesized through functionalization of the membrane pores offer enhanced reactivity due to increased surface area at the polymer-solution interface and low diffusion limitations. Oxidative techniques utilizing free radicals have proven effective for both the destruction of toxic organics and non-environmental applications. Most previous work focuses on reactions in the homogeneous phase; however, the immobilization of reactants in membrane pores offers several advantages. The use of polyanions immobilized in a membrane or chelates in solution prevents ferric hydroxide precipitation at near-neutral pH, …
Fabrication And Study Of Molecular Devices And Photovoltaic Devices By Metal/Dielectric/Metal Structures, Bing Hu
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
A new class of electrodes with nanometer-scale contact spacing can be produced at the edge of patterned metal/insulator/metal this film structures. A key challenge is to produce insulator layers with low leakage current and have pristine metal contacts for controlled molecular contacts. Atomic layer deposition of high quality Al2O3 thin films onto Au electrodes was enabled by surface modification with a self-assembled monolayer of -OH groups that react with a monolayer of trimethylaluminum gas source. Ar ion milling was then used to expose the edge of the Au/dielectric/Au structure for molecular electrode contacts. The junctions are characterized …

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents studies of the synthetic processes and applications of siloxane-based materials. Kinetic investigations of bridged organoalkoxysilanes that are precursors to organic-inorganic hybrid polysilsesquioxanes are a primary focus. Quick gelation despite extensive cyclization is found during the polymerization of bridged silane precursors except for silanes with certain short bridges. This work is an attempt to characterize and understand some of the distinct features of bridged silanes using experimental characterization, kinetic modeling and simulation. In addition to this, the dissertation shows how the properties of siloxane- materials can be engineered for drug delivery and adsorption.

Dissertations and Theses
This study describes a simulation-based approach for informing the incorporation of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) in buildings designed to the "Passive House" standard. PCMs provide a minimally invasive method of adding thermal mass to a building, thus mitigating overheating events. Phase change transition temperature, quantity, and location of PCM were all considered while incrementally adding PCM to Passive House simulation models in multiple climate zones across the United States. Whole building energy simulations were performed using EnergyPlus from the US Department of Energy. A prototypical Passive House with a 1500 Watt electric heater and no mechanical cooling was modeled. The …
A Feasibility Study Of Model-Based Natural Ventilation Control In A Midrise Student Dormitory Building, Steven James Gross
A Feasibility Study Of Model-Based Natural Ventilation Control In A Midrise Student Dormitory Building, Steven James Gross
Dissertations and Theses
Past research has shown that natural ventilation can be used to satisfy upwards of 98% of the yearly cooling demand when utilized in the appropriate climate zone. Yet widespread implementation of natural ventilation has been limited in practice. This delay in market adoption is mainly due to lack of effective and reliable control. Historically, control of natural ventilation was left to the occupant (i.e. they are responsible for opening and closing their windows) because occupants are more readily satisfied when given control of the indoor environment. This strategy has been shown to be effective during summer months, but can lead …
