Polarized x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at all La, Pa and Cu sites were used to study local structural features that accompany the strong Tc suppression at x similar to 1/8 in La2-xBaxCuO6. Two critical parameters regulating the strength of hole-lattice coupling in this material were determined, i.e., the direction and magnitude of CuO6 octahedra local tilts. Our findings include the existence of large disorder in the magnitude of the tilt angle about its average value {theta}, with an rms {radical}{delta} {theta}{sup 2}] {approx_equal} 2{theta}. Understanding the behavior of the electrons in the high-temperature copper oxide superconductors remains a challenging problem. An important class of models1,2,3,4,5 argues that the distribution of electronic charge and spin is not homogeneous: rather, spin and charge adopt a dynamic arrangement in which the spins on the copper form antiferromagnetic stripes, separated by domain walls containing the charge1,2,3,4,5. The dynamic behavior of the spins has been extensively studied by neutron scattering, and recent results have shown that the low-frequency fluctuations for different classes of materials display a universal spatial behavior that is consistent with the stripe picture. We review briefly the magnetic fluctuation spectra, obtained by neutron scattering, of the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.6 (Tc = 62.7 K). The resonance at 34 meV is the most prominent spectral feature in the superconducting state. Even so, its net weight accounts for a mere 1% of the total squared moment expected for planar Cu2+ ions. For context, we also provide a discussion of the spectral weights associated with the magnetic order and spin waves in two-dimensional S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

We show there are putative pitfalls when one predicts the magnetoresistance of magnetic tunnel junctions (JMR) based on different toy models. Amongst them are the sensitivity of the MR to the details of the profile of the potential barrier between the metallic electrodes and the insulating barrier, and the common assumption of only one band of electrons. We indicate the ingredients that are necessary to obtain a more complete description of the JMR of magnetic tunnel junctions.

Fe K-edge x-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) measurements were performed on glass samples of (Fe3O4)0.3(P2O5)0.7 with various amounts of Na2O or UO2. Near-edge and extended-XAFS regions are studied and comparisons are made to several reference compounds. We find that iron in the base glass is ~25% divalent and that the Fe2+ coordination is predominantly octahedral, while Fe3+ sites are roughly split between tetrahedral and octahedral coordinations. Also, we measure roughly one FeñOñP link per iron. Substitution of Na2O or UO2 up to 15 mo1% primarily affects the first FeñO shell. The results are compared to data from the related material Fe3(P2O7)2.

Inelastic neutron scattering was used to study the wave vector– and frequency dependent magnetic fluctuations in single crystals of superconducting YBa2Cu3O6+x. The spectra contain several important features, including a gap in the superconducting state, a pseudo gap in the normal state, and the much-discussed resonance peak. The appearance of the pseudo gap determined from transport and nuclear resonance coincides with formation of the resonance in the magnetic excitations. The role played by Ni impurities in destroying the superconducting state of La2-xSrxCuO4 is still unclear. This is partly due to the lack of clear experimental evidence on the effect of Ni substitution upon the atomic and electronic structure of this cuprate. To provide this information, we performed Ni /(-edge polarized XAFS measure-ments on oriented powder. A special magnetic alignment geometry allowed us to measure pure ~ and aAb-polarized XAFS in identical experimental conditions. We found that the NiO6 octahedra are contracted along the t-axis by 0.16(A) relative to the CuO6 octahedra in Lal.~sSro.~sCuO4, …

Lead alloys, such as lead-calcium-tin and lead-silver, are the primary insoluble anodes used in the electrowinning of metals. While some difficulties are encountered in their use, there is no obvious replacement that is economically and technically competitive. Two of the specific problems with lead include decreased cathode purity due to incorporation from corrosion products and the relatively high overpotential which increases cell voltage. To gain an improved understanding of the fundamental behavior of lead anodes, the polarization behavior of six different alloys in sulfuric acid was evaluated. ZrO2-Al2O3 powders were synthesized by spray pyrolysis. These powders were sintered at 1 GPa in the temperature range of 700Ç1100 ÉC. The microstructural evolution and densification are reported in this paper. The application of 1 GPa pressure lowers the crystallization temperature from ~850 to 700 ÉC. Similarly, the transformation temperature under 1 GPa pressure for <>g ê a Al2O3 reduces from ~1100 to 700Ç800 ÉC range, and that for t <>ê m ZrO2 reduces from ~1050 to 700Ç800 ÉC range. It was possible to ob-tain highly-dense nanocrystalline ZrO2-Al2O3 composite at temperatures as low as 700 ÉC. The effect of high …

The results of optical absorption measurements on nanocrystalline ZrO2:16%Y thin films are presented. Dense 0.7 μm thick films with 1-300 nm grain size have been obtained on sapphire substrate using a polymeric precursor spin coating technique. The relationship between the energy gap and microstructure of ZrO2:16%Y has been determined and discussed. The quantum confinement effect was observed at the grain size lower than 100 nm with the band gap energy shift of 0.25 eV when the microstructure was changed up to 1 nm. Copper nucleation and growth on titanium substrates from concentrated acidic copper sulfate solutions was studied at 45 and 65 °C and high cathodic potentials. Electrochemical experiments allied to SEM examination were performed to characterize the mechanism of nucleation and its evolution with time. Particular emphasis was given to the influence of potential and agitation on the initial stages of nucleation and growth. Results indicated that most of copper nucleation on titanium from a 83 g dm-3 Cu2+ solution, at 65 °C, is achieved in a matter of milliseconds. A multi-Debye relaxation model that is based upon the Boltzmann superposition principle has been used to determine the frequency-dispersion behavior of Pb (Mg1/3-Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) and Pb0.88La0.08 (Zr0.65Ti0.35) O3 (PLZT 8/65/35) relaxor ferroelectrics. For PMN, relaxation times on the order of seconds contribute to the dispersive character of the dielectric properties. A defect-relaxation mechanism that involves Mg cation hopping in a structure that is composed of interpenetrating 〈111〉 chains of ordered Pb (Mg1/2Nb1/2) O3 is proposed for PMN. Four formulations of magnesia-graphite-aluminum metal (antioxidant) bricks were prepared from the same raw materials, using the standard commercial practices. Chemical analysis and determination of room-temperature modulus of rupture and Young's modulus, as well as a complete microstructural characterization of the as-received materials, were performed. For high-temperature modulus-of-rupture and Young's modulus data, test samples of the four brick compositions were heated to 1000°, 1200°, and 1450 °C in flowing argon (< 1000 ppm oxygen at 1000 °C) and then loaded mechanically in flexure. Modulus-of-elasticity values ranged from 3.7 to 16.2 GPa and reflected strong effects of aluminum-metal concentration and treatment temperature. Young's modulus evolution with temperature was determined by the evolution of the micro-structure in the bulk of the specimens. Modulus-of-rupture values ranged from 6 to 21 MPa, and their evolution with temperature was determined by the evolution of the micro-structure in the bulk of the specimens at the lower testing temperatures (T≤1200 °C) and by phase assemblages in the surface regions of the specimens - essentially by the presence of the dense MgO zone - at 1450 °C.

A group of magnesia-graphite and magnesia-graphite-aluminum materials, the compositions of which represent a wide range of graphite contents (approximately 10-16.4 wt.%), aluminum contents (0-5.2 wt.%), and MgO and graphite qualities, were fabricated, using standard commercial practices. Chemical analysis and determination of room-temperature modulus of rupture (MOR) and Young's modulus, as well as a complete microstructural characterization of the as-received materials, were performed. Mechanical characterization at high temperature (1000°, 1200°, and 1450 °C) was done in terms of Young's modulus and MOR in an argon atmosphere (°C). Advanced ceramics are being developed for use in large area, high voltage devices in order to achieve high specific energy densities (greater than 10^6/ J/m^3/) and physical size reduction. Initial materials based on slip cast TiO2 exhibited a high bulk breakdown strength (BDS greater than 300 kV/cm) and high permittivity with low dispersion (epsilon approximately equal to 100). However, strong area and thickness dependencies were noted. To increase the BDS, multilayer dielectric compositions are being developed based on glass/TiO2 composites. Two kinds of aqueous precursor solutions are used to synthesize Mn-Zn ferrite powders: (i) nitrate (NO) precursor-derived from solutions of Mn(NO3)2, Zn(NO3)2, and Fe(NO3)3; and (ii) acetate (AC) precursor-derived from solutions of Mn(CH3COOO)2, Zn(CHCH3COOO)2, and Fe(NO3)3. Titanium dioxide ceramics (TiO2) are candidate materials for high energy density pulsed power devices. Experiments to quantify the dielectric strength of TiO2 have been performed on a limited number of unoptimized samples. A high voltage test set was constructed to test the titanium dioxide. All samples had a relative dielectric constant of 100, all samples were of 3 mm nominal thickness, and all tests were performed in water dielectric to reduce the effect of the triple point field enhancement at the electrode edge. The clustering of vacancies in severely quenched Al-Li solid solution alloys, with Li content between 230 and 2760 ppm, has been studied using Doppler broadening spectroscopy. The alloy samples were initially annealed at 873 K in dry air or dry, pure nitrogen. The onset temperature for vacancy clustering in samples initially annealed in air was found to be 150 ± 10 K, 40 ± 15 K lower than for the nitrogen-annealed samples. This result is consistent with the migration of divacancies, formed as a result of the significant increase in vacancy concentration caused by Li migration to, and oxidation at, …

We show that changes in the relative mole fractions of Li2O and Na2O in alkali metaphosphate glasses lead to “anomalies” in the specific heat and structural relaxations. Neutron scattering measurements were made on the spin fluctuations in YBa2Cu3O7−δ for different oxygen doping levels. Incommensurability is clearly observed for oxygen concentrations of 6.6 and 6.7 and is suggested for the 6.93. Measurements of the resonance for the O6.6 concentration show that it exists in a broadened and less intense form at temperatures much higher than Tc.

A mixed type electron emission, i.e., simultaneous ferroelectric and plasma emission, was observed with a negative driving pulse applied to doped Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ceramics in the absence of any external potential on the electron collector. During these emission studies, significant microstructural changes on the emission surface were observed, and corresponded to the different emission modes. Erosion craters at the edge of the electrode and small particles near these craters reflected the formation of a dense plasma there. Comparatively, cavities, i.e., grain pullouts, accumulated on the bare ferroelectric surface, the frequency of which depended upon its distance from the grid. This …

Simultaneous ferroelectric and plasma emission from Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 was observed with only a negative driving pulse applied to the sample, and without an extraction potential on the electron collector. Plasma emission was a strong, inconsistent, and self-destructive process. In addition, a positive ion current was detected. Comparatively, ferroelectric emission was a relatively stable self-emission process, exhibiting no apparent delay time, and no positive ion current. The relationship between the switching and emission current of ferroelectric samples measured simultaneously cannot only be used to determine the existence of ferroelectric emission, but can also give direction to choosing suitable ferroelectric materials for …

An improved iron phosphate waste form for the vitrification, containment and long-term disposition of hazardous metal waste such as radioactive nuclear waste is provided. The waste form comprises a rigid iron phosphate matrix resulting from the cooling of a melt formed by heating a batch mixture comprising the metal waste and a matrix-forming component. Much attention has been focused recently on the apparent differences between ion dynamics in ion-containing glasses as probed by electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) and by nuclear spin relaxation (NSR) techniques. In both relaxation processes, a power law frequency dependence is observed. Based upon fluctuation-dissipation arguments, the power law exponents should be equivalent. However, experimentally, it appears that the conductivity exponent is generally smaller than the NSR exponent. While an explanation for this discrepancy based upon fundamental differences in the correlation functions probed by the two techniques has been proffered, we show how this discrepancy may simply arise from differing analyses …

Incommensurate Magnetic Fluctuations In Yba2⁢Cu3⁢O6.6, Pengcheng Dai, Herbert A. Mook, Fatih Dogan

We use inelastic neutron scattering to demonstrate that the low-frequency magnetic fluctuations in YBa2Cu3O6.6 (Tc= 62.7 K) change from commensurate to incommensurate on cooling with the incommensurability first appearing at temperatures above Tc. For the energies studied, the susceptibility at incommensurate positions increases on cooling below Tc, accompanied by a suppression of the spin fluctuations at the commensurate points. These results suggest that incommensurate spin fluctuations may be a common feature for all cuprate superconductors.
