The plated wires were then drawn and evaluated in terms of required drawing energy and zinc loss during processing of up to 40% reduction in area. "In this project study was conducted with the goal of understanding the role of boron involved in structure-toughness property relationship for SO32 and SO43 steels. For a standard heat-treatment of austenitizing (1 hr.) at 1700°F, water quenching and 1 hr. tempering at 1150°F SO32 steel (with 37 ppm B) lacked in toughness, while SO43 steel (with 2 ppm B) showed good toughness. In both steels all the boron was present in the form of "soluble boron" i.e., Fe23 (B,C)6 borocarbide. "Thermally stimulated polarization current (TSPC) and thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurements were used to study sample current behavior based on the thermally activated release of trapped charges and polarization mechanisms. Samples studied included laboratory-prepared barium titanate samples (the barium to titanium ratio ranging from 0.96 to 1.04) and commercial ceramic capacitors. Both TSPC and TSDC showed the current spectra of the barium titanate samples were a function of crystal structure and the Ba/Ti ratio. The TSPC/TSDC results of the ceramic capacitors showed differences between capacitor formulations. TSPC/TSDC results also showed differences between good capacitors (physically and electrically) and capacitors …

"Two types of sulfur equilibration experiments were carried out in this study using either a conventional thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) technique or a horizontal tube furnace apparatus. Samples were equilibrated with flowing SO2-O2 gas mixtures of either 58% SO2 or 10% SO2.

"Oxide glasses make excellent candidates for radiotherapeutic microspheres used in liver cancer treatment because of their generally high chemical durability and safety of manufacture. From the compositions containing ~5 wt% P2O5 studied, magnesium alumino silicate glass microspheres and magnesium alkali silicate glass microspheres with 4 wt% ZrO2 had acceptably low releases of both elemental phosphorus in deionized water at 50°C, and radioactive 32P in human blood plasma at 37°C. The relative ranking of glass compositions in the elemental phosphorus leach test shows good agreement with the rankings of compositions in the radioactive 32P leach …

Feed pulps of dolomite and magnetite were used in the study. Two different cyclone types were investigated: An air-type cyclone arrangement and a conventional cyclone arrangement. “The critical cooling rate for glass formation for melts containing from 37.5 to 68.0 mol % Ga2O3 varied from 310 ± 80°C/s to 855 ± 115°C/s. The crystallization temperature, microhardness, UV and visible transmission were measured. The density increased from 4.075 g/cm3 at 37.5 3 mol % Ga2O3 to 4.402 g/cm3 at 56.0 mol % Ga2O3. "Thermogravimetric measurements as a function of oxygen activity were performed in the temperature range of 1200°C to 1400°C on a series of La-doped SrTiO3 compounds. A model postulating the crystallographic accommodation of ionic defects induced by the donor under oxidizing conditions is assumed. "The static fatigue, flexural strength and chemical corrosion of three commercially prepared, polycrystalline aluminas, two of orthopedic implant grade, were measured in demineralized water at 37°C and 70°C. The dissolution of a Ca-rich impurity phase, probably a glass, segregated at the grain boundaries and external surface, appears at least partially responsible for the significant difference in static fatigue of these three aluminas. The present results indicate that the minimum static fatigue in demineralized water, and the highest flexural strength in demineralized water and HF solution are both achieved by the alumina characterized by a low concentration of Ca at the …

"Lithium fluoride (LiF) is used to enhance the sinterability of perovskites, as it results in the formation of a liquid phase. In this study, the mechanism and kinetics of sintering for LiF-fluxed strontium titanate (SrTiO3) were investigated. The Sr/Ti ratio was varied between 0.98 and 1.03, and the LiF content in the green compact ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 weight percent. Sintering was conducted at temperatures between 695° and 925°C for isothermal dilatometric shrinkage measurements for time intervals of 6000 seconds or less. This study was conducted to determine the accuracy of the DYSCO simulation program in simulating the open and closed water system on the pilot fourdrinier paper machine located in the Department of Paper Science and Engineering at Western Michigan University. The pilot machine was run at a maximum speed of 76 meters (250 feet) per minute without the press and drier sections, as well as slower speeds of 61 and 46 meters per minute. "As a means of investigating the often adverse drawing behavior of electrogalvanized steel wire, drawing experiments were conducted on a variety of industrially-supplied and laboratory-prepared electroplated steel wires. Back-flow and shaving appeared to be the mechanisms by which sizeable zinc losses occurred. Performance during drawing and the quality of the product depended upon both the characteristics of the plating and the drawing process variables. Grain size, grain texture, and surface 'flatness' can affect the required drawing force, surface finish and level of zinc retention. "The liquid-vapor and solid-vapor interfacial energies of the system Ga-Al2O3 were determined by the sessile drop technique. The interfacial energies were found to decrease with increasing temperature and P02.

A maximum liquid-vapor interfacial energy of 581 ergs/cm² was found for a clean sessile drop at 1227°C. Values for Γ0, the excess concentration of oxygen, were calculated for both the liquid-vapor and solid-liquid interfaces. The crystal structure and lattice parameters were determined by x-ray diffraction. All compositions were orthorhombic Pbnm.

Pellets were pressed from powders of each composition and sintered to high density in a reducing atmosphere. When a small amount of Fe was substituted for Cr, the powder could be sintered in air.

"Selected properties of a dense fired alumina, a phosphate-bonded ramming mix, and a calcium aluminate cement-bonded castable were evaluated after exposure at 260°C and 538°C to steam/H2 atmospheres (2.58, 5.17, and 6.89) MPa. Chemical reactions in the refractories were determined by x-ray diffraction, DTA/TGA, and changes in physical properties. The modulus of rupture (MOR) of the dense alumina decreased with increasing steam pressure and degree of saturation. The calcium aluminate cement phases in the castable were most reactive in 260°C steam and formed several hydrated phases which generally resulted in a higher MOR. The MOR of the ramming mix …

"The flexural strength and relative Ca concentration at the external surface were measured for a dense alumina aged in deionized water and Ringer's solution at 40⁰C for 60 weeks and at 80⁰C for 45 weeks. "Barium titanate and BaTiO₃-based multilayer capacitors were sintered in a commercial microwave oven. The oven was equipped with a 2.45 GHz continuous-wave magnetron with a maximum power output of 650 watts.

Microwave-absorbing setters made of SiC were used to offset thermal losses from the samples and allow sintering temperatures (>1325°C) to be achieved. Pure samples were pressed from commercial BaTiO₃ powder and microwave sintered to about 90% of theoretical density. Multilayer capacitors were obtained from commercial manufacturers and used in all sintering experiments. "A copper-prospect in south-central Arizona has been evaluated on a metallurgical basis. Primary chalcocite and secondary covellite, plus the copper oxides malachite and brochantite, constitute the economic mineralization. The deposit outcrops as a steeply dipping (70°SW), intensely brecciated, copper-bearing quartz vein with discontinuous lenticular ore shoots.

Acid leaching techniques alone and in conjunction with froth flotation utilizing four copper oxide specific collectors were used to evaluate the amenability of this ore to processing. "A by-product of lead smelting is a matte which consists mostly of lead and copper sulfides. Experiments were conducted to determine the feasibility of removing lead from molten matte by adding iron as a reducing agent. The effectiveness of iron at 1000 and 1100°C was a function of matte composition, but not of temperature except near iron saturation. The lead content of matte could be decreased to as low as 9.0 to 11.6 wt pct (2.3 to 3.0 at. pct) at 1000°C, depending on composition. "A typical lead sinter machine feed can be pelletized in a drum pelletizer using tap water as a binding liquid. The green pellets produced have return sinter as cores, and an outer layer of new material and fluxes. The moisture content of the pellets produced is about 5%. The pelletizing procedure developed used raw materials from the Amax Lead Smelter, with only a minor amount of feed preparation. The importance of proper moisture control, use of binders, method of adding moisture, speed of pelletizing drum, etc. were investigated. "Impervious petalite bodies were formulated from petalite, lithium aluminosilicate frit and kaolin. Thermal expansion coefficients for selected bodies were less than 2 x 10⁻⁶ /°C(20 - 600 °C). Mineralogy and the reactions in systems containing petalite, lithium aluminosilicate frit and kaolin were observed. Silica-poor high quartz solid solution was found to be the reaction product formed from the reaction between frit and kaolin before conversion to ß-spodumene solid solution at higher temperatures. The crystallization of the ß-spodumene solid solution phases in this system did not occur at the same temperature resulting in variation in the size of the crystallites. The …

"Molten coal slag corrosion studies conducted on molybdenum at 1400°C used static and stirred slag experiments and electrical current experiments to parallel electrode conditions of slagging duct MHD generators. Crucibles containing molybdenum and slag were exposed to combustion-type gases in a tube furnace. Carbon monoxide-carbon dioxide gas mixtures controlled oxygen partial pressures at selected values between 10-11 and 10-3 atm. Metallograph and microprobe examination of polished sample sections defined corrosion characteristics.

"High-alumina refractories (99+ % Al₂O₃) were produced by pressing a mixture of 70% tabular alumina and 30% reactive alumina and autoclaving in saturated steam at 1.4 MPa (200 psia)/194 °C to 3.4 MPa (500 psia)/242 °C for 12 to 96 h. Autoclaving converted the reactive alumina to boehmite which acted as the bond phase. At room temperature the MOR ranged up to 37 MPa depending upon boehmite content. The hot-MOR decreased steadily with increasing temperature, but was still 8 MPa at 1400 °C which exceeds that of comparable cement-bonded or conventionally fired high-alumina refractories. "A crystallographic study was made of powders from the LaCr1-x AlxO₃, La.90(Mg.05 Cr1-x Alx ).95O2.83 , and La1±xCrO₃ systems. The relationships between composition and thermal expansion, electrical conductivity, and vaporization were also investigated. The x-ray diffraction data of the LaCrCO₃ - LaAlO₃ compounds showed the system to form a single phase solid solution for any given sample from the series.
