This paper describes the behaviour of rubber in multi-axial fatigue, with respect to oil resistance. A series of tests were carried out on EPDM specimens subjected to varying degrees of swelling. The control methodology and the loading mechanism employed in the testing of elastomers using dynamic multi-axial bubble inflation are outlined. Swollen specimens were prepared by immersing them in reference mineral oil. Specimens were cycled to failure and the results were analysed. The number of cycles to failure for a given engineering stress amplitude was plotted for both dry (unswollen) and swollen specimens. Fracture surfaces for each set of specimens …

The microstructures and viscoelastic properties of anisotropic magnetorheological elastomers were investigated in this paper. The measurement results show that their mechanical properties are greatly dependent on the magnetic flux density applied in preparation. A finite-column model was proposed to describe the relations between the microstructures and the viscoelastic properties. The simulation results agree well with the experimental results.

Magnetorheological Elastomers (MR Elastomers or MREs) are a kind of novel smart material, whose mechanical, electrical, magnetic properties are controllable under applied magnetic fields. They have attracted increasing attentions and broad application prospects. But conventional MREs are limited to wide applications because their MR effects and mechanical performances are not high enough. The synthesis of zinc oxide through the decomposition of a solid oxalate precursor was
investigated. It was found that the rate of preparation of the precursor had a quantitative effect on
the morphology and extent of surface ligation of particles produced; contrary to our expectations,
it was found that the slow combination of reagents led to a less pure product. It has been
determined that this time dependence mimics the variation of reactant ratios. Zinc oxide particles

When a rigid body in the form of a plane strain indentor is forced into an elastomer, the asperities on the surface of the indentor are filled by the softer material. As depth of ingress increases, the rubber displaced into the indentor asperities exhibits stick-slip behaviour. The rubber adheres to the rigid body and if the depth of ingress is held at a maximum, the level of adhesion remains constant despite short-term load relaxation occurring in the rubber.

A novel sol– gel process suitable for depositing thin-film lead
barium titanate has been developed. X-ray diffraction analysis
showed perovskite phase crystallization to occur at a temperature
as low as 400°C with single-phase Pb0.5Ba0.5TiO3 (PBT)
resulting at a temperature as low as 500°C. Small concentrations
of barium carbonate were evident by X-ray diffraction at
400°C, and indications of minor, carbonate-containing phases
were evident by FTIR at 600°C. Deposition of the sol by spin
coating on single-crystal and thin-film MgO on silicon resulted
in highly oriented PBT films after calcination at 600°C. Mixed

Solid solution Pb1-xBaxTiO3, with particular emphasis on Pb0.5Ba0.5TiO3, was prepared
using a sol-gel process incorporating lead acetate trihydrate, barium acetate, and
titanium isopropoxide as precursors, acetylacetone (2,4 pentanedione) as a chelating
agent, and ethylene glycol as a solvent. The synthesis procedure was optimized by
systematically varying acetylacetone: Ti and H2O:Ti molar ratios and calcination
temperature. The resulting effects on sol and powder properties were studied using
thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared
spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, and x-ray diffraction (XRD).
Crystallization of the perovskite structure occurred at a temperature as low as 450 °C.

Needles are used in the textile industry for weaving. In high volume textile production a problem is wear of the needle eyelet as the threat is pulled through. This wear results in a cost to the textile manufacturer both in needle replacement, but in many cases more importantly, lost production during needle substitution The objective of this study was to examine the potential of wear resistant coatings deposited using the magnetron sputtering technique to increase the life-time of textile needles.
