The purpose of this paper is to report on the investigation of the possibility of removing impurities from the two important light metals, aluminum and magnesium, by applying the principles of zone-refining. The impurities in these metals are namely iron, silicon, and copper, which is the main impurity. Copper and iron come from the reduction cells, while silicon is introduced during the preparation of the material for the reduction bath.

The primary objective of this project was to develop a process that would yield a salable product from the manganese tailings and to evaluate the economical gain that might be achieved from such a venture. From the nature of the tailings and early flotation research, it became apparent that selective flocculation and subsequent gathering of the manganese-oxide minerals into agglomerates was the key factor to be considered in the flotation testing.

The East Helena plant of the American Smelting and Refining Company is a custom lead smelter. The chief product of the smelter is lead bullion, although by-products such as matte, speiss, cadmium-rich fumes, and zinc-rich slag are also produced. The uranium in the Sponsor's Ore was proven amenable to the standard hydrometallurgical processes-- the acid leach and the carbonate leach. From an economical standpoint, the results of the heap-leaching and flotation studies were not favorable because of low recoveries. The possibility of employing an emulsion-induced selective flocculation flotation procedure still exists.

This report presents the investigation of three methods of synthesizing artificial rhodonite; fusion of silica and manganese dioxide, prolonged sintering of the compact of manganous carbonate and silica at below liquidus temperatures, and the precipitation by reaction of salts in an aqueous solution followed by sintering. In each case the rhodonitic product was of less than desired purity, containing varying amounts of silica, tephroite, and higher valence oxidized manganese forms, as well as aluminum.

The first application of vacuum techniques to the metallurgical industry was made in the early part of this century by Rohn, a German, who developed vacuum technology to a production status in the specialty metals business. Preparation of solutions and apparatus and experimental procedure was described. The effect of antimony and cobalt in a zinc sulfate electrolyte upon current efficiency with increasing time was determined by the hydrogen evolution method. The degree of preferred orientation of grains in the electrodeposits was determined by the reflection method of X-ray diffraction.

Titanium, although possessing excellent corrosion resistance in some media, is severely attacked by molten inorganic salts such as those employed in heat-treating baths. Since titanium undergoes allotropic changes, many of its alloys are amendable to heat treatment. The purpose of this study was to discover a salt (or other suitable medium) in which titanium alloys can be successfully heat treated without fear of corrosion.

The application of streaming potential to mineral-dressing is comparatively recent. Although colloidal chemists, for some time, have been familiar with streaming potential and the electrical double layer, A.M. Gaudin, Richards Professor of mineral-dressing, M.I.T, and D.W. Fuerstenau, his assistant, were the first to publish a series of experiments dealing directly with streaming potential applied to flotation. The apparatus described in this thesis was used by Fuerstenau and was developed by him especially for this type of investigation.

Before World War I the United States procured all of its battery grade manganese dioxide from the Caucasus. Even at this time some experimentation was under way to produce this depolarizing substance synthetically and the experiments were successful to a large extent so that when the ore from the Caucasus was cut off, the necessary material was produced synthetically. The shortage was relieved when a deposit of manganese dioxide was discovered in Montana, which was superior to the ore from the Caucasus.

Certain properties of mercury, such as its affinity for other metals, its high hydrogen overpotential, and its unique liquid state, have made its use desirable for many applications in the fields of physical and process metallurgy. Though considerable research has been done on mercury amalgams, only comparatively recently has it been shown that mercury amalgams follow certain definite laws with regard to phase exchange phenomena and electrochemical properties. It is now possible to predict, with considerable accuracy, the results of amalgam reactions.

Zone-refining, the purification of a metallic ingot resulting from the passing over its length of a comparatively short molten zone, has been found useful in the purification of several metallic elements. The impurities present in an elemental metal are often more soluble in the molten zone than in the solid material, and are carried to one end of the bar in the molten zone. This molten-zone movement can be repeated any number of times on a metallic ingot, with the zone always being moved in the same direction.

Since the beginning of World War II a great deal of investigation has been done on the tungsten deposits in the western United States. These deposits are principally composed of scheelite. The scheelite deposits in the western United States are low grade, and disseminated. With the development of nonmetallic flotation methods these vast deposits of scheelite-bearing ores have become a major source of tungsten for the United States, as the high grade ore deposits have become practically depleted.

Samples of zinc sulfate and ferric oxide were roasted for periods of one, two and three hours at temperatures between 750° and 1000°C. The per cent zinc oxide combined, as zinc ferrite, was determined by dissolving the soluble zinc in a ammonium-ammonia chloride solution. Six samples were roasted at 750°C to determine the degree of decomposition of zinc sulfate to zinc oxide and sulfur trioxide.

This thesis reports an investigation concerning the adsorption of aliphatic nitriles by chalcopyrite, activated sphalerite, and unactivated sphalerite. The experimental evidence suggests that abstraction, chelation and re-adsorption may take place. On the basis of the experimental results, an equilibrium-type adsorption hypothesis is proposed.

The concentrates were obtained through the courtesy of the Minerals Engineering Company. The United States Gypsum Company's Heath plant, which is located at Heath, Montana, is one of forty-six diversified production facilities for the development and production of gypsum products. The Heath plant is located about twelve miles southeast of Lewistown, Montana, and consists of a mine, a mill and a boardplant. The Heath plant was built in 1925 by the Northwestern Gypsum Company.

The electrolytic zinc department of the Anaconda Reduction Works consists of five divisions, each responsible for one phase in the preparation of electrolytic zinc. These divisions are: (1) The zinc concentrator which produces a high-zinc, low-lead concentrate for further treatment at Anaconda, and a low-zinc, high-lead concentrate which is shipped to East Helena for further treatment. (2) The roasting division wherein the concentrate is roasted to oxides and sulfates. (3) The leaching division which (a) leaches the roasted concentrate to dissolve the zinc, and (b) purifies the leached solution.
