"In a recent survey of the refractories field with particular respect to the Pyrometric Cone Equivalent of different clays it was suggested that a difference in the P. C. E. value of clays might be found due to different stages of heat treatment that these clays had previously undergone. "After making a survey of the available information on the subject of permanent growth in grey iron castings, it was found that very little definite information is available and such as is available does not seem to satisfy all conditions. "The Yellow Pine mine at Goodsprings, in southwestern Nevada, yields an ore nearly free from gangue constituents. The ore as mined contains 8 to 12 per cent lead, 8 to 12 ounces silver, and 30 to 35 per cent zinc, and is milled in a gravity concentration plant where separation of the lead and zinc is made. "The Electrolytic Process is a process capable of almost unlimited mechanicalization. For obvious reasons it is more economic to treat high grade concentrates; yet, the extremely high grade concentrates are not essential. The Electrolytic Process can treat economically concentrates as low as 30.% zinc under certain conditions. It is significant that as the grade of concentrates offered for treatment is lowered, the treatment cost per ton of concentrates decreases for the Electrolytic Process; whereas, it will increase, as previously stated, for the Retort Process. Howe, Foley and Winlock, under the auspices of the National Research Council, the results of which were published under the title of - "Influence of Temperature, Time and Rate of Cooling on Physical Properties of Carbon Steel," by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, February, 1923.
