Waste forms containing glassy and crystalline phosphate and silicate phases were produced to immobilize salt waste simulants from pyro processing and characterized by using Raman spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, heat capacity, and chemical durability measurements. In this work, a phosphosilicate waste form is presented to leverage the benefits of both borosilicate glasses and iron phosphate glasses. To improve waste loading, prior to immobilization, salt simulants were successfully dechlorinated using ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, mixed with a borosilicate frit (5–30 wt. %) and Fe2O3, and vitrified. Additions of 2.5–15 wt. % borosilicate glass (NBS3) improved normalized release rates …

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) support industrial automation that incorporates people, hardware, signal, computation, and control using networking to achieve desired results. The complex automated CPS design demands a standard and comprehensive approach to appropriately identify the system requirements, define the architecture, and model the relationships among the software and hardware components. Systems Modeling Language (SysML) provides the capability for a comprehensive modeling to capture the desired design requirements in the systems architecture. SysML enables performance estimation of the model by analyzing constraints while identifying interactions among the components through various behavioral diagrams. In this paper, SysML is applied to the design …

Maraging steels are known for their exceptional strength but suffer from limited work hardening and ductility. Here, we report an intermittent printing strategy to tailor the microstructure and mechanical properties of maraging 250 steel via tuning the thermal history during wire-arc directed energy deposition. By introducing a dwell time between adjacent layers, the maraging 250 steel is cooled below the martensite start temperature, triggering thermally driven martensitic transformation during the printing process. Thermal cycling during subsequent layer deposition results in the formation of reverted austenite which shows a refined microstructure and induces elemental segregation between martensite and reverted austenite. The …

An inability to accurately control the rate and extent of solidification of cementitious suspensions is a major impediment to creating geometrically complex structural shapes via 3D printing. In this work, we have developed a thermoresponsive rapid stiffening system that will stiffen suspensions of minerals such as quartz, limestone, portlandite, and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) over a wide pH range. When exposed to trigger temperatures between 40 °C and 70 °C, the polymer binder system undergoes a thermally triggered free radical polymerization (FRP) reaction, leading to an ultrafast stiffening of the suspension at an average rate on the order of 1 …

A Low-Carbon Approach For Lime Production Using Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis-Driven Limestone Calcination, Shubham Agrawal, Sayee Srikarah Volaity, Srinivas Kilambi, Aditya Kumar, Narayanan Neithalath Mar 2025

A Low-Carbon Approach For Lime Production Using Self-Propagating High Temperature Synthesis-Driven Limestone Calcination, Shubham Agrawal, Sayee Srikarah Volaity, Srinivas Kilambi, Aditya Kumar, Narayanan Neithalath

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Limestone calcination produces calcium oxide (or lime), that forms the basis for the manufacturing of many critical engineering materials such as cement and iron-and-steel. Limestone calcination—an endothermic reaction—is regarded as one of the most energy-and-CO2 intensive industrial chemical reactions, and is facilitated by fossil fuels, since the high temperature requirement (∼900 °C) renders it less conducive to electrification through renewable energy sources. In this study, a novel, low-temperature (∼450 °C) pathway for ultrafast calcination of limestone using combustion synthesis or self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) is developed. SHS leverages exothermic heat from the combustion of lignin or biomass—as low-carbon fuels—mixed …

Local Chemical Ordering Of A Neutron-Irradiated Crfemnni Compositionally Complex Alloy, Nathan Curtis, Sohail Shah, Mukesh Bachhav, Kaustubh Bawane, Fei Teng, Calvin Parkin, Tiankai Yao, Haiming Wen, Adrien Couet

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

While ion-irradiation studies are a critical first step in studying compositionally complex alloys (CCAs) for nuclear applications, they do not capture all the microstructural changes occurring under the low irradiation dose rates and different particles' scattering patterns experienced in a nuclear reactor setting. To explore these phenomena in reactor-relevant conditions for the first time in CCA, the single-phase solid-solution Cr10Fe30Mn30Ni30 was neutron irradiated up to 6.61 displacements per atom at 395 and 579 °C. Irradiation-enhanced local chemical ordering (LCO) well beyond the range of short range ordering was observed, and is predicted to be the precursor to the precipitation of …

Understanding mold flux crystallization is essential for assessing heat transfer during steel casting. The complexity of the mold gap presents challenges in identifying the optimal testing method and nucleation type. This study investigates how variations in wetting properties influence nucleation dynamics, in particular the wetting behaviors of mold flux in platinum and graphite crucibles and how they affect crystallization temperatures and solidification mechanisms. Advanced analytical techniques, including confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were employed to analyze nucleation under different conditions, with calibration using synthetic slag, Li2SO4, and thermodynamic equilibrium simulations. The findings highlight the crucial …

Molten ferrite systems are used in the smelting and refining processes in steelmaking, to reduce the loss of metals in slags and to accelerate reaction rates. Here, high-energy x-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on aerodynamically levitated molten spheres of 43BaO-57FeOX and 43SrO-57FeOX at 1873 K using laser beam heating. The composition was varied within the range of x = 1-1.5 by changing the oxygen partial pressure of the levitation gas. The corresponding x-ray pair distribution functions have been interpreted using empirical potential structure refinement (EPSR) modeling. In oxygen-rich melts (x = 1.5), our EPSR models indicate very similar structures …

Simulation-Based Models For Postearthquake Response: A Survey And Research Directions, Abhijit Gosavi, Lauryn A. Spearing, Lesley H. Sneed

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computer simulation is increasingly being used by emergency planners as a tool to improve disaster response given that it can model real-world scenarios, such as earthquakes. Although there has been an increase in simulation research focused on disaster response, much of this literature is from disparate fields and across disaster scenarios. To bridge this gap, this paper surveys simulation-based models for post-earthquake response from the year 2000 onward. Advantages of simulation over closed-form statistical models are discussed. Three main subproblems in post-earthquake response models are explored: (1) service distribution (e.g., food, water), (2) infrastructure restoration (at the building and transportation …

Interest in the use of graphene to enhance the properties of cementitious materials is growing, but major impediments in implementation are the cost of graphene and changes in binder rheology attributable to these nanomaterials. This study explores the influence of novel, cost-effective, environment-friendly, and mass-producible graphene on the rheology and early-age structure development of cementitious binders. Two novel graphene types—fractal graphene (FG) and reactive graphene (RG)—are used in plain cement mixtures as well as those containing 30 % (by mass) of fly ash and/or limestone powder, at low dosages of ≤0.02 % by mass of binder. The early- and later-age …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

3D-printing could offer substantial benefits to the construction industry including the fabrication of customized/bespoke components, eliminating formwork, and reducing material waste. Despite these advantages, control of the pumpability, extrudability, and buildability of 3D-printed concrete (3DPC) remains challenging. This study demonstrates how the use of fly ash (FA) enables enhanced thermal stiffening, and rapid alkali-activation in the presence of portlandite (Ca(OH)2, CH). In general, blends of CH and FA exhibit less structural build-up at low temperatures, but upon reaching a trigger temperature of 75 °C, these blends achieve rapid stiffening, at rates of ∼800 Pa/s. The rapid stiffening arises from the …

Effects Of Gypsum And Limestone On Early-Age Hydration And Strength Optimization In Belite Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement, Sai Akshay Ponduru, Bryan K. Aylas-Paredes, Taihao Han, Advaith Neithalath, Narayanan Neithalath, Gaurav Sant, Aditya Kumar

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Belite calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSAB), an alternative to Portland cement, exhibits excellent strength at both early and later ages. However, due to its high belite content, the carbon reduction from this type of cement is not sufficient when compared to other alternative cements. To further enhance CSAB's sustainability, this study investigates the performance of CSAB when partially replaced by low-carbon mineral additives (i.e., limestone and gypsum). The primary objective is to identify the optimal mixture design by incorporating gypsum and limestone to formulate a sustainable binder that maintains high compressive strength. The CSAB is replaced (with both additives) by up …

Predicting The High Temperature Deformation Behavior Of Haynes282 By A Dislocation-Density Based Crystal Plasticity Model, Tianju Chen, Huadong Fu, Shujing Dong, Yue Zhou, Yijia Gu, Caizhi Zhou, Ridwan Sakidja

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mechanical behavior of Haynes282 is heavily dependent upon the microstructure state, calling for mesoscale model to study the relationship between the underlying microstructure and macroscopic performance. In this work, we employ crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) to explore the deformation mechanisms of Hanyes282 subjected to tensile (short-term) and creep (long-term) tests. Haynes282 is a newly developed Ni-based superalloy, containing relatively low volume fraction (≤20%) of spherical γ′ precipitate phase. A dislocation-density based model is developed to describe the tensile and the creep behavior, where a dimension reduction algorithm is proposed to obtain more accurate inter-particle spacing. Furthermore, dislocation-particle interaction …

Electrochemical processing of used nuclear fuel in molten chloride salts generates complex radioactive salt waste. Dechlorination of waste salt using phosphate compounds at elevated temperatures (∼600 °C) reduces the volume of material for disposal while evolving gaseous chlorine compounds that could be used to transform metallic uranium into UCl3. In this study, the effects of processing temperature, environment (air or argon), and H3PO4 precursor-to-chlorine ratio on the dechlorination efficacy of a simple alkali salt mixture (SSM) and a salt waste simulant (ERV3) were evaluated. For both salts, the highest chlorine release was concurrent with the water boiling. For the SSM, …

Selective Surface Activation And Flotation Of Pyrite For The Recovery Of Tellurium From Sulfide Tailings, Mulenga Mutema Chibesa

Masters Theses

Copper sulfide tailings from past and present mining operations are important secondary sources of critical elements such as tellurium (Te), a key component in cadmium–telluride photovoltaic solar cells. Characterization of tailing streams from copper porphyry (CP) ore flotation revealed that Te-bearing minerals are predominantly hosted in pyrite, which is usually depressed and discarded. Enhancing pyrite recovery is therefore a critical first step toward concentrating Te minerals for downstream extraction. However, pyrite flotation is often hindered by hydrophilic surface complexes formed during prior processing. This research investigated selective flotation of Te-bearing pyrite from CP tailings using micro flotation and bench-scale flotation, …

Phase-Field Modeling Of Rapid Solidification Processes, Nima Najafizadeh Jan 2025

Phase-Field Modeling Of Rapid Solidification Processes, Nima Najafizadeh

Doctoral Dissertations

"Many advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing utilize rapid solidification of alloys, as it enables the formation of exotic non-equilibrium microstructure and thus improved properties. However, the interrelationship between the processing parameters and the resulting microstructure in rapid solidification is yet to be fully understood. We aim to investigate the microstructure evolutions during the rapid solidifications using phase-field modeling. The phase-field method assumes a diffuse interface, which avoids tracking the moving interface and hence enables efficient numerical simulations for complex microstructure evolution. A phase-field model with coupled solute-thermal diffusion and solute trapping effect is developed to investigate the rapid …

Iron–chromium–aluminum (FeCrAl) class alloys are candidates for use as cladding for accident-tolerant fuels and moderators. In this context, hydrogen isotope permeation in FeCrAl alloys is an important material property. In the present work, the apparent permeability, effective diffusivity, and apparent solubility of hydrogen in the FeCrAl alloys C26M and Kanthal D (KD) were measured with gas-driven hydrogen permeation. Permeation measurements were conducted at temperatures of 400 to 700 °C and at gas-driven pressures from 1 to 100 kPa. In particular, the effect of grain size on hydrogen transport was studied with KD samples with three different microstructures: nanocrystalline (NC), ultra-fine …

We report on the electrical conductivity of barium iron phosphate glass, a candidate for radioactive waste encapsulating glass. The glass composition has been optimized for slow dissolution in hot water because the precipitation of a stable hydration layer of FeO(OH) on the glass surface enhances the water durability of the glass. The mechanism of electrical conductivity of the glass is assumed to be an electron hopping between the electronic energy levels of Fe (II) and Fe (III) ions, obeying the electron carrier generation of Fe (II) → Fe (III) + e−. The electrical conductivity of the base glass was ∼3.2 …

Understanding Heterogeneous Nucleation In Iron Alloys From First Principles: A Review And Discussion, Semen Naumovich Lekakh

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Heterogeneous nucleation during solidification plays a key role in structure formation of different types of iron-based alloys, including steels and cast irons. A review summarizes the novel theoretical methods which were used to understand the nature of heterogeneous nucleation in iron-based alloys. An ab initio simulation of atomic adsorption was used to predict the activity of heterogeneous nuclei, and the thermodynamic methods were applied to design conditions for desired precipitate formation in the iron melts. A high-resolution TEM study of individual nucleus and statistics of nuclei family, obtained from an automated SEM/EDX analysis, illustrates a possibility to design processes of …

Quasi-2D perovskite made with organic spacers co-crystallized with inorganic cesium lead bromide inorganics is demonstrated for near unity photoluminescence quantum yield at room temperature. However, light emitting diodes made with quasi-2D perovskites rapidly degrade which remains a major bottleneck in this field. In this work, It is shown that the bright emission originates from finely tuned multi-component 2D nano-crystalline phases that are thermodynamically unstable. The bright emission is extremely sensitive to external stimuli and the emission quickly dims away upon heating. After a detailed analysis of their optical and morphological properties, the degradation is attributed to 2D phase redistribution associated …
