The purpose of this thesis is to record and discuss the results of tests conducted, at the Montana School of Mines, in which pyrite concentrates from the Concentrator Department of the Anaconda Reduction Works, Anaconda, Montana, were subjected to the reducing effects of natural gas at elevated temperatures in an endeavor to produce iron in the metallic form.

The oldest system in which identifiable invertebrate fossils have been found is the Cambrian. The basal Cambrian formation found in Montana is the Flathead sandstone and quartzite of Middle Cambrian age. No fossils have been reported from this formation. Above the Flathead is the Wolsey formation composed of green fissile shale with sandy and limy members. This fossiliferous member of the Middle Cambrian is known in Northwestern Montana as Gordon, and in the Philipsburg quadrangle as the Silver Hill formation.

Except for the early work of Boutwell and Irving, little has been published on the geology of the Park City mining district. For this reason and because of the availability of a selected suite of ores from the Silver King mine of this area, this writer chose the mineralogy of the Silver King mine as a senior thesis for the department of Geology of the Montana School of Mines.

The mines at San Jose which are within the Wadley unit are the largest antimony mines in Mexico. These mines produce more than half of the antimony produced by the company from its mining operations. Since the time of the author's connection with the company, a number of changes have been made in planning of development work, handling of labor, methods of mine development, cost improvement, and other problems inherent in the successful guidance of an operation.

"It is known that the number of temper carbon nodules per unit volume of malleable iron has an effect on both the rate of anneal and on the resulting physical properties, but neither have been clearly worked out quantitatively. The purpose of this investigation is to ascertain the effect of temper carbon nodule number on certain of the physical properties of a commercial malleable iron.

"The flotation of sulphide minerals from siliceous and calcareous gangue minerals always gives a concentrate that is contaminated to a greater or lesser degree with the gangue minerals, even though the collectors used do not show any appreciable collecting properties for the gangue minerals when they are treated alone. In an effort to reduce the amount of undesirable gangue mineral floated with the concentrate it is the practice to add arbitrary amounts of various reagents such as quebracho, alkali hydroxides, carbonates, silicates, sulphides, phosphates, fluorides, and sulphuric acid which have been found to be advantageous. During the war the need for high vacuum in producing magnesium by the Pidgeon Process and in certain phases of uranium purification led to the perfection of both equipment and technique for high vacuum operations. "Results of tests presented in this paper indicate that the Santa Maria del Oro ores might be processed by a method which should yield a gold recovery of 96 to 98 percent and a copper recovery of about 78 percent, both figures subject to an increase with further work and study of the problem.

"The construction of the apparatus for production of powder patterns at a definite temperature and the technique for evaluation of x-ray powder patterns by the asymmetric method are described in detail, and the mode of error elimination is discussed.
A new scanning device is designed for use in x-ray diffraction work.
A modified method is described for the determination of densities of solids, which eliminates some of the difficulties interfering with other similar methods thus far proposed. Formulae are derived for the calculation of density as well as for reduction of density at a desired temperature.

The Czarina mine operated for a short time during the last Great War, lies in the southwestern corner of the Butte mining district of Montana. This area was worked during the extensive silver mining in Butte during the 1890's, and was prospected from time to time in later years. The orebody of the mine consists of fissure fillings of manganese mineral oxidized to a certain depth, in a fracture zone of the Boulder Batholith.

The Bonanza mine of the Emery mining district in Powell County is on the largest veins in the area, and is developed to a depth of 680 feet by an incline shaft following the dip of the structure. Sulfide ores carrying gold and silver values are mined throughout the area which is easily accessible by road from Deerlodge, Montana, ten miles west of the district.

Although the majority of geologic structures in Montana have been tested in the search for petroleum, only a few have been found to contain commercial quantities of either oil or gas, and with each successive dry hole, producers are becoming more and more wary of investing capital in new wells located on structural features alone. It is apparent that if new oil and gas fields are to be found in Montana, exploration must be done on the basis of something other than structure, or combined with structure.

One of the many secrets which planet Earth has jealously kept from its inhabitants is the microscopic fossil form known as the foraminifer. It hides in common shale, awaiting the patient and painstaking searcher. In furthering the study of the foraminifera of the Colorado group of formations in Northern Montana, the United States Geological Survey has collected several suites of shale samples from the Sunburst Dome, five to ten miles south of the Canadian border and twenty-five miles north of the city of Shelby, Montana.

If, in a system at a given temperature, there should occur a decrease in free energy and this decrease does not take place, then the resulting condition of the system is termed supercooling. A common example of the phenomenon is found in the liquid-to-solid transition of many substances, when the temperature of the liquid may be lowered below its freezing point without solidification. Similar phenomenon occurs in the gas-to- liquid, gas-to-solid, and polymorphic transformations.

The middle Cambrian Meagher limestone of southwest Montana is characterized by mottled members that are finely crystalline in the tan part and microcrystalline in the dark matrix. As seen in the literature, similar mottled limestones are thought to be an arrested stage in the dolomitization, or alteration of limestones.

The batholith is dated as Paleocene or early Eocene. The rocks of the batholith in this area are classified as ranging from quartz-granodiorite to granodiorite. Shale is known to be a source-bed for oil, and the Colorado shale which is over 2000 feet thick in places may well be the source for the oil which is now accumulated in the included or closely associated sandstones. The beneficiation of rhodochrosite ore to the extent that it is suitable for nodulizing and subsequent use in the steel industry is intriguing. Such ores from certain mines is relatively easy to beneficiate, but the rhodo-chrosite ore from several deposits of the Philipsburg district has never been successfully up-graded by any of the several known beneficiating methods.
