Nanostructured Silicon Meta-Waveguides And Surfaces For Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction, Saddam Gafsi
Nanostructured Silicon Meta-Waveguides And Surfaces For Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction, Saddam Gafsi
All Dissertations
In this study, we tackle the challenge of light-matter interaction engineering and local field enhancement using various silicon photonic platforms based on three different approaches. (i) The first approach is based on boundary condition engineering where we present and show through simulation and experimental results, a silicon nanodisk “diabolo” configuration able to support significant local field enhancement levels in the range ~102 to 104 in the high index medium through proper structural modifications at the nanoscale. We show that the presented optical behavior is consistent with the anapole modes characterized by the observed near-field enhancement and coinciding with far-field suppression. …

Aqueous Supercapacitors With Wide Operative Voltage Window And Long Cycling Life Enabled By Electrolyte Hybridization Effect, Shi-Hua Ma, Qi Yin, Jin-Ping Zhao
Journal of Electrochemistry
Developing supercapacitors (SCs) with long cycling life and wide operative voltage window is a significant topic in the field of aqueous electrolytes. Although the design of water in salt (WIS) electrolytes has pushed the development of aqueous electrolytes to a new height, the WIS electrolytes with an operative voltage window of up to 2.5 V is still very scarce. Herein, in order to enrich the type of aqueous electrolyte with high operative voltage, tetramethylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMAOTf) based WIS electrolyte was used as a model to construct WIS based hybrid electrolyte with acetonitrile (ACN) co-solvent and LiTFSI co-solute. In view of …

Refining Chlorosulfonation Methods For The Synthesis Of A Perfluoroalkyl Arylsulfonimide (Pfsi) Monomer, Ainsley P. Foster, Benjamin Varney, Hua Mei
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are sources of energy that are clean, quiet, and highly responsive to changes in power needs, making them promising for use in automobiles and other portable power devices. The electrolyte of a PEM cell–the layer responsible for conductivity–is a polymer membrane, commonly consisting of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers. Perfluoroalkyl arylsulfonimide (PFSI) polymers are expected to improve the efficiency of PEM fuel cells through optimal stability and proton conductivity. The trifluovinylether (TFVE) aryl perfluorosulfonamide monomer is a new PFSI monomer proposed to fulfill these benefits once polymerized. A six-step synthesis route was initially designed to …

Optimization Of Channel Structure Of Alkaline Water Electrolyzer By Using An Expanded Mesh As A Bipolar Plate, Hai-Yan Xiong, Zhen-Xiao Zhu, Xin Gao, Chen-Ming Fan, Hui-Bao Luan, Bing Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is the most mature technology for hydrogen production by water electrolysis. Alkaline water electrolyzer consists of multiple electrolysis cells, and a single cell consists of a diaphragm, electrodes, bipolar plates and end plates, etc. The existing industrial bipolar plate channel is concave-convex structure, which is manufactured by complicated and high-cost mold punching. This structure still results in uneven electrolyte flow and low current density in the electrolytic cell, further increasing in energy consumption and cost of AWE. Thereby, in this article, the electrochemical and flow model is firstly constructed, based on the existing industrial concave and …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Designing highly efficient Pt-free electrocatalysts with low overpotential for an alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a significant challenge. Here, a novel and efficient cobalt (Co), ruthenium (Ru) bimetallic electrocatalyst composed of CoRu nanoalloy decorated on the N-doped carbon nanotubes (CoRu@N-CNTs), was prepared by reacting fullerenol with melamine via hydrothermal treatment and followed by pyrolysis. Benefiting from the electronic communication between Co and Ru sites, the as-obtained CoRu@N-CNTs catalyst exhibited superior electrocatalytic HER activity. To deliver a current density of 10 mA·cm–2, it required an overpotential of merely 19 mV along with a Tafel slope of 26.19 mV·dec …

Aging Characteristics Of Lithium-Ion Battery Under Fast Charging Based On Electrochemical-Thermal-Mechanical Coupling Model, Dong-Xu Zuo, Pei-Chao Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
The aging characteristics of lithium-ion battery (LIB) under fast charging is investigated based on an electrochemical-thermal-mechanical (ETM) coupling model. Firstly, the ETM coupling model is established by COMSOL Multiphysics. Subsequently, a long cycle test was conducted to explore the aging characteristics of LIB. Specifically, the effects of charging (C) rate and cycle number on battery aging are analyzed in terms of nonuniform distribution of solid electrolyte interface (SEI), SEI formation, thermal stability and stress characteristics. The results indicate that the increases in C rate and cycling led to an increase in the degree of nonuniform distribution of SEI, and thus …

Rate Law For Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Over Cuo, Bo-Yuan Gao, Wen-Hua Leng
Journal of Electrochemistry
Photocatalytic splitting of water over p-type semiconductors is a promising strategy for production of hydrogen. However, the determination of rate law is rarely reported. To this purpose, copper oxide (CuO) is selected as a model photocathode in this study, and the photogenerated surface charge density, interfacial charge transfer rate constant and their relation to the water reduction rate (in terms of photocurrent) were investigated by a combination of (photo)electrochemical techniques. The results showed that the charge transfer rate constant is exponential-dependent on the surface charge density, and that the photocurrent equals to the product of the charge transfer rate constant …

Recent Advances On Ruthenium-Based Electrocatalysts For Lithium-Oxygen Batteries, Yu-Zhe Wang, Zhuo-Liang Jiang, Bo Wen, Yao-Hui Huang, Fu-Jun Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Rechargeable lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries have attracted wide attention due to their high energy density. However, the sluggish cathode kinetics results in high overvoltage and poor cycling performance. Ruthenium (Ru)-based electrocatalysts have been demonstrated to be promising cathode catalysts to promote oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It facilitates decomposition of lithium peroxide (Li2O2) by adjusting Li2O2 morphologies, which is due to the strong interaction between Ru-based catalyst and superoxide anion (O2–) intermediate. In this review, the design strategies of Ru-based electrocatalysts are introduced to enhance their OER catalytic kinetics in …

Degradation Study Of Single Crystal Barium Titanate Capacitors Under Harsh Environment, Menglin Wang
Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Capacitors are critical for voltage source converter functionality. DC-link capacitors are known to have reliability issues. Resistance degradation at high temperatures is one of the primary failure modes in capacitors. The overall goal of this program is to improve the understanding of high voltage breakdown and resistance degradation in high dielectric constant inorganic ceramic capacitors, using single crystal BaTiO3 as a model system to understand the impact and control of oxygen vacancy migration to maximize the long-term reliability of high voltage inorganic multi-layer ceramic capacitors, which allows higher frequency operation, reducing the size and cost of passive components in …
Development And Processing Of Shape Memory Polymer Composites (Smpcs) For Application In Structural Robotics And Robotic Sensors., Kavish Sudan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Shape Memory Polymers (SMPs) have attracted significant attention since their introduction in the 1980s due to their remarkable ability to regain their original shape from a temporarily deformed state when exposed to an external stimulus, typically heat. This shape memory effect, driven by thermal transitions such as the glass transition temperature (Tg) or melting temperature (Tm), has made SMPs highly attractive for applications in soft robotics, aerospace, and biomedical devices. However, SMPs face challenges such as limited mechanical strength, thermal stability, and electrical conductivity, which hinder their broader adoption in advanced applications. To address these challenges, …

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Density Functional Theory (DFT) based Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the Sec-
ondary Electron Yield (SEY) of metals, alloys, and metal oxides are performed to
find material properties that could help reduce or influence the multipactor effect.
In order to accurately model the SEY of materials, knowledge of the frequency- and
momentum-dependent Energy Loss Function (qDepELF) is required. The qDepELF
is difficult to determine from experiment; however, it can be calculated from first
principles. The DFT-MC approach for simulating the secondary electron genera-
tion, propagation, and emission processes is described herein. Material properties,

Fabrication And Characterization Of A Monolithic Photonic Integrated Circuit With High-Aspect Ratio Photonic Device Structures, Sami A. Nazib
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
The focus of this work was to create a process to fabricate an InP-based Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC). The design of the PIC required the photonic components of this device to be created by deep etching of an epitaxially-grown multilayer structure. Therefore, a novel dry etching process was developed to produce very high aspect- ratio (HAR) features. This process not only involved the development of dry etch chemistry but also the engineering of a metal mask structure. The next step of the challenge was to use a polymer-based material that would have two functions: cladding for the etched photonic components …

Data-Driven Viewpoint For Developing Next-Generation Mg-Ion Solid-State Electrolytes, Fang-Ling Yang, Ryuhei Sato, Eric Jian-Feng Cheng, Kazuaki Kisu, Qian Wang, Xue Jia, Shin-Ichi Orimo, Hao Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Magnesium (Mg) is a promising alternative to lithium (Li) in solid-state batteries due to its abundance and high theoretical volumetric capacity. However, the sluggish Mg-ion conduction in the lattice of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) is one of the key challenges that hamper the development of Mg-ion solid-state batteries. Though various Mg-ion SSEs have been reported in recent years, key insights are hard to be derived from a single literature report. Besides, the structure-performance relationships of Mg-ion SSEs need to be further unraveled to provide a more precise design guideline for SSEs. In this Viewpoints article, we analyze the structural characteristics of …
