A study of the sintering of iron has been made by observing the rate of bonding of iron wires wound on iron spools. The specimens were sintered at a constant temperature of 850c in vacuum furnaces capable of producing pressures of 10-5 to 10-4 mm of mercury, and the growth of the bond between wires was observed as a function of time.
It has been concluded that the volume-diffusion mechanism is strongly operating in the sintering of iron at 850c, but in an evacuated system, the evaporation-condensation mechanism also contributes to the sintering process.

A Preliminary Study Of The Effect Of Heat Treatment On The Strength And Microstructure Of A Glass-Ceramic Material, P. D. Ownby

"The strength and microstructure of a glass-ceramic material of the composition 53 percent SiO₂, 19 percent Al₂O₃, 15 percent MgO, and 13 percent Li₂O were studied. Cylindrical specimens of glass were formed and heat-treated to six different temperature levels for various time periods. The method of strength testing used was a diametral compression loading technique. It was found that the strength of this material increased initially with heat-treatment but then decreased. The strength characteristics of the completely crystallized glass ceramic material were found to be dependent on the initial nucleation period. Some factors which influenced anomalous crystal growth are described. …

"The crystallization process in a zirconia-alumina- silica melt of high viscosity was studied, A system was used of the same composition found in commercial electrocast glass tank refractories. Artificial nucleation was tried in an attempt to control the process of crystallization; the method involved the addition of suitable "seeding" material.
It was found that introduction of nucleation agents consisting of the major component oxides of the system had noted effect upon the course of crystallization. Preferred orientation normally found in unseeded electrocast refractories was diminished with the addition of zirconia grains and amplified with particles of tabular alumina.

"Triaxial porcelain bodies containing various forms of silica, quartz, cristobalite and fused silica, were strength tested in bending. Significance tests were employed to discern real differences in the strength sample statistics caused by the various forms of silica. Firings were performed at three temperature levels. The differences in strength sample statistics were correlated to the microstructures of these silica porcelains.

"Various furnaces which are commonly used for P.C.E. determinations were compared from a literature review. The inadequacies of these furnaces were noted and a furnace was designed, constructed, and evaluated in an effort to minimize or eliminate some of the indicated problems. For this furnace heat is developed in opposed cones (susceptors), which are fabricated from 0.005” molybdenum sheet, by induced (induction) currents from a 10 KW vacuum tube generator. The furnace components are enveloped by a pyrex cylinder in which a vacuum (approximately 1 to 5 micron pressure absolute) is maintained during operation"--Abstract, page ii.

"The knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of refractories is of great importance in determining their usefulness and application. The thermal expansion of refractories is of particular importance in that it affects the thermal stability of the product. A high coefficient of thermal expansion leads to greater spalling and destruction of the bricks in use. "The phase compatibility relationships for the quaternary system lime-titania-zirconia-silica have been determined by a solid-phase-reaction technique.
Preliminary division of the system into Alkemade tetrahedra was based on the phases found in samples by X-ray diffraction analysis. These samples covered the entire volume of the tetrahedron in a systematic fashion. When the quaternary system had been divided into regions or compatible phases, an analytical method was used to calculate the phase composition of each sample. The relative amounts of each phase in a sample determined by X-ray analysis were compared with the calculated quantities, and agreement between the two methods verified …

The purpose of this investigation was to design and construct a laboratory size electrolytic cell in which to reduce alumina, using the same basic materials that are used in a commercial size cell. The Ragged Point oil field is located in Northwest Musselshell County, in the Lake Basin field of central Montana, and on the western border of the Great Plains region. The surface topography is that of a plain marked by erosion and moderate folding. The stratigraphy of central Montana shows periodic marine invasions from the Cordilleran trough, with normal marine limestones interbedded with sandstone sand shales. These sediments are over 12,000 feet thick, with the Cretaceous Eagle and Colorado formations exposed at the surface on the Ragged Point anticline. Undifferentiated Cambrian limestones and shales are the oldest rocks encountered in drilling.

"The original objective of this investigation was to determine by testing those clays, shales, and loesses occuring in Missouri in large deposits (over 15 feet in thickness with little overburden), which would be suitable for the production of light weight aggregate. "Refractory castables or concretes, a comparatively new member of the refractories family, are an admixture of highly aluminous cements and graded refractory aggregates, blended in predetermined proportions very much like structural concrete. The refractory aggregates must contain a large amount of fines contrary to the requirements of ordinary concrete. Unlike the Portland cements, which are mainly combinations of calcium silicates, the highly aluminous cements are predominantly calcium aluminates. It was the purpose of this study to construct a universal mount, to construct a protective lead shield, to operate the instrument, and to provide a pole figure using the transmission method of Schulz and Decker. There are at present several lengthy x-ray methods of determining the grain orientation of metals. These methods are mainly photographic. Many mines in the Cardwell Mining District have been more or less steady producers of gold, silver, lead and zinc since 18SO. The area first came into prominence with the discovery of gold at the Mayflower Mine in 1896. All of the information on the various districts has come directly from published reports. The investigation was suggested by Mr. Forbes Robertson. In the past germanium has been determined by either wet methods or by the spectograph; the spectograph being used for the determination of very small amounts of germanium and wet methods used when more than one hundredth of one percent germanium is present.
