This study considered opportunities for hydrogen in stationary applications in order to make recommendations related to RD&D strategies that incorporate lessons learned and best practices from relevant national and international stationary power efforts, as well as cost and environmental modeling of pathways. The study analyzed the different strategies utilized in power generation systems and identified the different challenges and opportunities for producing and using hydrogen as an energy carrier. Specific objectives included both a synopsis/critical analysis of lessons learned from previous stationary power programs and recommendations for a strategy for hydrogen infrastructure deployment. A method of sintering a composite body characterized by a transition metal carbide phase (such as a ZrC phase) substantially evenly distributed in a second, typically refractory, transition metal (such as W) matrix at ambient pressures, including blending a first predetermined amount of first transition metal oxide powder (such as ZrO2) with a second predetermined amount of second transition metal carbide powder (such as WC powder). "The main objectives of this research were to synthesize iron phosphate compounds, study phase equilibria in the iron phosphate system, focusing on the glass forming area, and investigate glass formability and properties based on the liquidus regions. Twelve iron phosphate compounds were successfully prepared and studied in terms of liquidus temperature or decomposition behavior. The liquidus surface of the Fe₃PO₇- Fe(PO₃)₃ system was re-determined and found to be significantly different from that originally presented by Wentrup in 1935. Eutectic points exist at 58.0 mole% Fe₂O₃ (1070⁰C), 42.7 mole% Fe₂O₃ (925°C), and 37.0 mole% Fe₂O₃ (907°C). The latter two eutectic points …

"The main objective of this research was to evaluate the properties and structures of glasses from the stannous (SnO) phosphate system for possible use in low temperature optical applications. Glasses in the binary xSnO-(100-x)P₂O₅ system (50 ≤ x ≤ 70) were prepared and their thermal and optical properties were evaluated. Differences in glass transition temperatures (Tg) measured here and reported in the literature were explained by differences in the residual water content in the glasses, as determined by infrared spectroscopy. "Zirconium carbide-tungsten cermets were prepared by in situ reaction sintering a mixture of zirconia and tungsten carbide. Tungsten is a refractory metal with a melting point of 3422⁰C; however, its mechanical strength decreases significantly with increasing temperature. One approach to improve the elevated temperature strength is to add ceramic particulates to the matrix. Zirconia and tungsten carbide were compacted and then reacted and sintered in a single step by heating to 2050⁰C. The resulting stoichiometric zirconium carbide-tungsten cermet had a relative density greater than 96%. Cermets with two different grain sizes were produced by altering the final sintering temperature. Sintering …

In this paper we discuss the peridynamic analysis of dynamic crack branching in brittle materials and show results of convergence studies under uniform grid refinement (m-convergence) and under decreasing the peridynamic horizon (δ-convergence). Comparisons with experimentally obtained values are made for the crack-tip propagation speed with three different peridynamic horizons.We also analyze the influence of the particular shape of themicro-modulus function and of different materials (Duran 50 glass and soda-lime glass) on the crack propagation behavior. "The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship between the processing parameters, microstructural development, defect chemistry and electrical properties of titanium oxide (TiO₂) dielectrics for high energy density capacitor applications. The effects of aliovalent dopants on the dielectric properties of TiO₂ ceramics were investigated, aiming to further improve the desired dielectric properties especially at elevated temperatures (up to 200°C). Due to the segregation of acceptor type impurities in the starting powders, space charge polarization took place in TiO₂ ceramics with relative large grain size (>̲500nm), leading to high dielectric loss and low energy storage efficiency. Polymeric materials have provided pathways to products that could not be manufactured otherwise. A new technology which merges the benefits of ceramics into these polymer products has created materials ideally suited to many different industries, like food packaging. Freeze-spray deposition (FSD) method is described for rapid fabrication of layered composites with controlled layer thickness and uniform microstructure. The graded alumina/zirconia composites are fabricated by FSD of ceramic slurries followed by freeze drying. Aqueous slurries with glycerol addition are sprayed on a cooled substrate using an automated 3D gantry system. Processing parameters such as viscosity of the ceramic slurries, composition and thickness of deposited layers as well as sintering conditions are investigated to optimize the fabrication process. Microstructural analysis of the fabricated composites revealed uniform and crack-free transitional layers indicating a strong interfacial bonding between the layers.

The present effort will investigate the off-axis creep behavior of the Nexte720/Alumina-Mullite CMC, a material system which relies on a porous alumina/mullite matrix for damage tolerance as compared to the pure alumina matrix in earlier studies. This research evaluated the creep behavior of N720/AM with a ± 45° fiber orientation at 1200°C in: laboratory air, steam, and argon environments. Creep-rupture tests at the creep stress levels of: 32, 30, 26, and 20 MPa were conducted in each environment. Lightweight materials that can withstand high temperatures and corrosive environments are constantly sought after in the aerospace industry, typically for Gas Turbine Engine (GTE) application. These materials need to retain their strength throughout the long service period they would see in the combustor and turbine components of a GTE. This report is based on some of the revolutionary concepts described in the Road Map on Bioinspired Power Systems within the AFRLRW Campus Challenge II. Development of biofuel cell concepts integrated with fuel regeneration and energy storage capabilities are proposed to create a compact and self-sustaining power system. Investigation of the electrical properties of phosphate glasses where transition metal oxide such as iron oxide is the network former and network modifier is presented. Phosphate glasses containing iron are electronically conducting glasses where the polaronic conduction is due to the electron hopping from low to high iron valence state. Nitrogen adsorption at 77 K on mesoporous silica materials (MPS) with varying synthesis time and treatment conditions was investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were also used to characterize the mesoporous materials. This study was performed at 6, 24 and 72-h synthesis times. It is shown that 6-h is not enough for complete formation of the MPS material and at least 24-h is necessary. The pore structure starts decaying for the 72-h synthesis time. Traditional anti-corrosion technology has relied heavily on using reducible metal species, predominantly hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), for protecting reactive metal alloys such as aluminium which is extensively used in the aerospace sector. However, the impending changes in the use of Cr(VI) in Europe and the United States have forced aerospace manufacturers to examine alternative materials for protecting aluminium. "Aluminosilicate based refractories are widely used in furnace installations for melting aluminum because they are inexpensive, readily available and generally exhibit the properties desired from a refractory material. However, they face severe corrosion and degradation issues due to the extremely reducing nature of molten aluminum alloys. Isothermal static cup testing is widely used as a tool to evaluate the performance of refractories against penetration by molten aluminum alloys. An analytical model of an effective permittivity of a composite taking into account statistically distributed orientations of inclusions in the form of prolate spheroids will be presented. In particular, this paper considers the normal Gaussian distribution for either zenith angle, or azimuth angle, or for both angles describing the orientation of inclusions. The model is an extension of the Maxwell Garnett (MG) mixing rule for multiphase mixtures. The resulting complex permittivity is a tensor in the general case. Bragg reflections in Y-resonant x-ray diffractograms of BaZr0.9Y0.1O2.95 (BZY10) reveal that Y is organized in a superstructure. Comparison with neutron diffraction superstructure reflections in protonated/deuterated BZY10 suggests that both superstructures are linked, and that protons move in the landscape imposed by the Y. The thermal lattice expansion decreases abruptly for protonated BZY10 at T≥648±20 K, coinciding with the onset of lateral proton diffusion and suggesting a correlation of structural changes and proton conductivity. The chemical shift in the Y L1-shell x-ray absorption spectra reveals a reduction from Y3+ toward Y2+ upon …

"The main objectives of this dissertation were to explore the production of bioactive ceramic and glass scaffolds with oriented pore architectures by unidirectional freezing of suspensions, and to characterize the mechanical and biological performance of the scaffolds. Freezing of aqueous suspensions of hydroxyapatite (HA) or bioactive 13-93 glass particles resulted in the formation of scaffolds with a lamellar-type microstructure (pore width = 5-30 µm). The addition of polar organic solvents (such as 60 wt% dioxane) to the aqueous suspensions markedly changed the morphology and size of the oriented pores, giving scaffolds with a columnar-type microstructure and larger pre width (90-110 …

As one of the main components in power converters, dielectric capacitors can play crucial roles in facilitating power conversion in various applications, such as hybrid-electric and fuel cell vehicles. Capacitor reliability is a key challenge for development of high-performance capacitors. In this study, yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with various yttria concentrations were fabricated and tested for dielectric properties, such as breakdown strength and dielectric loss factors. Several mononuclear Co (II), Ni (II), Cu (II) and Fe (II) complexes of tetradentate salpren-type diamine, obtained from 3,5-di-tert–butyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopropane have been prepared and characterized by analytical, spectroscopic (FTIR, UV-Vis) techniques, magnetic susceptibility measurements and thermogravimetric analyses (TG). The thermodynamic and thermal properties of complexes have been investigated. Using the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) process, both flexural test bars and 3D fuel injector components have been fabricated with zirconium diboride (ZrB2) powder. Stearic acid was selected as the binder. Values of SLS process parameters were chosen such that the green parts could be built with sharp geometrical features and that the sintered parts could have good mechanical properties. After binder burnout and sintering, the SLS fabricated ZrB2 test bars achieved 80% theoretical density, and the average flexural strength of the sintered samples was 195 MPa. It has been shown that Nd1+xBa2−xCu3O7−x could exhibit a pronounced Jc(H) peak effect, which results in an enhancement of the critical current density under the medium range magnetic field. Additions of small quantities of Nd2O3 into Pt-doped YBa2Cu3O7−x (Y123) resulted in the formation of nanosized (30–60 nm) secondary phases which are expected to have a significant effect on superconducting properties of melt textured Y123 single crystals. The formation of powders from multi-elemental oxides for the subsequent formation of a green and sintered compact body is a major processing operation in the manufacture of ZnO varistors. The physical and chemical properties of the metal oxides are crucial not only for the formation of a varistor component with optimum microstructure and thus electrical characteristics but also for avoiding the introduction of flaws and reduced yield during subsequent manufacturing stages. Multi-layer armor containing ceramic and metallic layers has become more common in the past two decades. Typically, ceramics have high compressive strength which combined with their low density make them highly desirable for armor applications. This research effort numerically simulates high velocity impact of cylindrical projectiles on multi-layer metallic and ceramic targets of finite thickness. The impact of the projectile occurs normal to the surface of the target. The projectiles used are made of either S7 tool steel or tungsten. The creep behavior of an oxide-oxide ceramic matrix composite (CMC) was investigated at 1200°C in laboratory air, in steam and in argon. The composite consisted of a porous alumina-mullite matrix reinforced with laminated, woven mullite/alumina (Nextel/720) fibers. The composite had no fiber coating and relied on its porous alumina/mullite matrix for flaw tolerance. Tensile stress-strain behavior was investigated and the tensile properties were measured at 1200°C in laboratory air. Tensile creep behavior of the CMC was examined for creep stress levels of 73, 91, 114 and 136 MPa. Creep run-out, set to 100 h, was achieved for stress levels ≤ …

An inelastic pulsed neutron scattering study was performed on the dependence of the dispersion and spectral intensity of the in-plane Cu-O bond-stretching LO phonon mode on doped charge density. The measurements were made in the time-of-flight mode with the multiangle position sensitive spectrometer of the ISIS facility on single crystals of YBa2Cu3O6+x x=0.15, 0.35, 0.6, 0.7, and 0.95. The focus of the study is the in-plane Cu-O bond-stretching LO phonon mode, which is known for strong electron-phonon coupling and unusual dependence on composition and temperature. Nanoscale BaTiO3 capacitors were deposited on Si wafers at dielectric thicknesses of approximately 25, 50, 100, and 200 nm using RF-magnetron sputtering with either 25 nm thick Ni or Pt electrodes. Multiple DC and AC tests were conducted on these devices to determine the effects of BaTiO3 thickness on the measured dielectric behaviors. All films were observed to have non-linear responses for resistance, permittivity, and loss with respect to dielectric thickness. The permittivity was found to follow a standard dead layer model behavior with measured values ranging from approximately 350 to 1700 for Ni electrodes and approximately 100 …

This project will examine inert fuels containing ZrO2 and MgO as the inert matrix. Ceramics with this inert matrix, Ce, U and eventually Pu will be synthesized and examined. While the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative focus is on inert fuels with Pu as the fissile component, this task will perform initial laboratory experiments with Ce and U. The initial work with Ce will be performed early in the project with results used as a basis for U studies. Reactor physics calculations will be used to examine suitable quantities of burnable poisons from the candidate elements Gd, Er, or Hf. …
