An Experimental Technique For Developing Intermediate Strain Rates In Ductile Metals, Hugh E. Gardenier Iv
An Experimental Technique For Developing Intermediate Strain Rates In Ductile Metals, Hugh E. Gardenier Iv
Theses and Dissertations
Quantifying the strain-rate sensitive dynamic properties of structural materials is an important area of research in the solid mechanics field. Property evaluation is typically accomplished using dynamic tests which involve rapid loading or impact of specimens. In these tests, inertial forces and wave propagation make it difficult to accurately record the material response to a loading condition at an equivalent location. Furthermore, these tests typically generate high strain rates (in excess of 103 s−1) and an experimental method for generating rates of strain in the intermediate strain rate regime which is relatively simple, low cost, and reliable …
Investigation Into Fretting Fatigue Under Cyclic Contact Load And In Conjuction With Fatigue Of Titanium Alloy, Abdulla A. Al-Noaimi
Investigation Into Fretting Fatigue Under Cyclic Contact Load And In Conjuction With Fatigue Of Titanium Alloy, Abdulla A. Al-Noaimi
Theses and Dissertations
Fretting fatigue is the surface damage that occurs at the interface between two components that are undergoing a small amplitude oscillatory movements. It results in a reduction of the material life comparing to the plain fatigue. Most of the previous works were accomplished under a constant applied contact load and a little effort has been done under a variable contact load, while none of these studies have taken the phase difference between the axial and the contact load. The primary goal of this study is to investigate the effect of phase difference between axial and contact loads on fretting fatigue …
A Finite Element Study Of Piezoelectric Thin Films On Substrates, Bo Liu
A Finite Element Study Of Piezoelectric Thin Films On Substrates, Bo Liu
Theses and Dissertations
The overall goal of this work has been mainly to advance the understanding of the degradation in the response of piezoelectric thin films after they are deposited on substrates. To have better understanding of the difference in the response between free standing piezoelectric films and those deposited on a substrate, we calculated the normalized "effective" piezoelectric coefficients for BT/MgO, PZT/STO and ZnO/STO respectively. We also studied the impact on the effective coefficients due to the components of the bulk material's piezoelectric coefficients. After studying the clamping effects of the substrate, lattice mismatch, stiffness of the films and the substrates, we …

Theses and Dissertations
The Holloman High Speed Test Track (HHSTT) is a rocket-powered sled track facility used for testing a variety of hypervelocity aerospace applications. The current speed record is 6,453 miles per hour. While this seems fast there are customers at the track that have requirements demanding even faster speeds. Significant research has been conducted in the area of rail gouging as it relates to the test track, and efforts are under way to reduce and even eliminate this phenomenon. Any steps taken in this effort may eliminate catastrophic sled failures caused by gouging, however wear is another damaging issue that needs …
Damage Detection Using Lamb Waves For Structural Health Monitoring, Jeffrey S. Crider Ii
Damage Detection Using Lamb Waves For Structural Health Monitoring, Jeffrey S. Crider Ii
Theses and Dissertations
Nondestructive structural health monitoring (SHM) is an evolving technology being developed for monitoring air and space systems. The information gathered on a system's structural integrity through SHM detection methods may result in reduced costly maintenance inspections, enhanced safety, and system failure predictions. This study evaluates Lamb wave approaches used to detect simulated cracks in laboratory experiments on thin plates to detect more realistic damage in a test article representing the complex geometry of an existing aircraft bulkhead. We take a "hot-spot" monitoring approach, where we monitor an area of the structure known to fail. In our experiment, we evaluated the …
Experimental Methods To Characterize Nonlinear Vibration Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Adam P. Tobias
Experimental Methods To Characterize Nonlinear Vibration Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Adam P. Tobias
Theses and Dissertations
For urban combat reconnaissance, the flapping wing micro air vehicle concept is ideal because of its low speed and miniature size, which are both conducive to indoor operations. The focus of this research is the development of experimental methods best suited for the vibration testing of the wing structure of a flapping wing micro air vehicle. This study utilizes the similarity of a beam resonating at its first bending mode to actual wing flapping motion. While computational finite element analysis based on linear vibration theory is employed for preliminary beam sizing, an emphasis is placed on experimental measurement of the …
Lamb Wave Propagation In Varying Thermal Environments, Jennifer P. Andrews
Lamb Wave Propagation In Varying Thermal Environments, Jennifer P. Andrews
Theses and Dissertations
During flight, launch, and reentry, external surfaces on aerospace vehicles undergo extreme thermo-acoustic loads resulting in structural degradation. Structural health monitoring techniques are being devised to evaluate the health of these structures by locating and quantifying structural damage during and after flight. One such technique uses Lamb wave propagation to assess damage on the surface and through the thickness of thin materials. The objective of this study was to assess the sensitivity of piezo-generated Lamb wave propagation to isothermal and thermal gradient environments using both theoretical and experimental methods. Experimental isothermal tests were conducted over a temperature range of 0-225 …
The Effects Of Microstructure On Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Nickel Alloy In-100, Erik C. Saladin
The Effects Of Microstructure On Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Nickel Alloy In-100, Erik C. Saladin
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis studied the effect of microstructure on the fretting fatigue behavior of IN-100. First, fretting and plain fatigue S-N curves were determined over a large range of applied stress at an identical R-ratio and for fretting tests, done with a constant contact load. It was found that fretting fatigue reduces the cycles to failure compared to plain fatigue. The half contact width was found for the specimens, the crack initiation angle was found to be 40 deg and the crack initiation location was at the trailing edge of contact for the fretting specimens. Computational work included finding the stress …

Effects Of Polishing Shot-Peened Surfaces On Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Ti-6al-4v, Kasey S. Scheel
Theses and Dissertations
The research of this thesis was done to investigate the effects of polishing a shot-peened specimen of Ti-6Al-4V on the fretting fatigue life of that specimen. The shot-peening process, though one of the most beneficial techniques in prolonging fretting fatigue life, creates a textured surface that may lead to problems on the micro level. This research was done in an attempt to further improve the peening process by examining the effects of another surface treatment to be used in conjunction, surface polishing. The rough peened surface may contain abrupt changes in surface geometry that act as stress risers, which are …

Analysis And Simulation Of Hypervelocity Gouging Impacts, John D. Cinnamon
Theses and Dissertations
In this work, a summary of past and present research efforts, as well as the theoretical foundation, of hypervelocity gouging is presented. As the Holloman AFB High Speed Test Track (HHSTT) sled's speed has increased to Mach 8.5, material interactions develops which causes "gouging" - this can result in catastrophic failure. A characterization of gouging, including a thermodynamic history, is developed from an examination of a gouged rail. An extensive study is performed that determines the specific material flow models for VascoMax 300 and 1080 steel. The models are validated utilizing several experimental tests which are successfully simulated using CTH …

Fretting Fatigue Behavior Of Nickel Alloy In-100, Elhoucine Madhi
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, a systematic investigation of the fretting fatigue behavior of nickel alloy, IN-100 was carried out. The study includes both experimental work and the corresponding analysis of the contact conditions, and the latter is accomplished using the finite element method. Fretting fatigue tests were performed over a wide range of axial stresses to examine both low and high cycle fretting fatigue under constant contact load and the influence of different pad geometries was also explored. It was observed that fretting reduced the fatigue strength of IN- 100, and that increasing cylindrical pad radii does not have the same …
Validation Of A Scaled Plane Strain Hypervelocity Gouging Model, Ronald J. Pendleton
Validation Of A Scaled Plane Strain Hypervelocity Gouging Model, Ronald J. Pendleton
Theses and Dissertations
The phenomenon of high speed impact is of great interest to the Air Force of Scientific Research and the Air Force Research Laboratory's Holloman High Speed test track. Rocket sled tests at the facility frequently are limited to velocities lower than actually attainable due to damage to the rail in the form of gouges. Direct observation of the gouging phenomenon is not currently possible. This leaves computational modeling as the only means to study the phenomenon. A computer model has previously been used to model the development of gouging at the Holloman High Speed Test Track. However, this model has …
