Keeping inventory record of packed grains in silos poses challenges since the bulk material’s different segments do not discharge uniformly, leading to formation of random peaks and valleys on the surface. To facilitate obtaining accurate volume measurement of the grains by taking into account this non-linear behavior on the surface, laser or plumb-bob level-sensing devices are employed at different part of the surface to probe the level of material under those regions.

The application of traditional approaches to the design of efficient facilities can be tedious and time consuming when uncertainty and a number of constraints exist. Queuing models and mathematical programming techniques are not able to capture the complex interaction between resources, the environment and space constraints for dynamic stochastic processes. In the following study discrete event simulation is applied to the facility planning process for a grain delivery terminal. A new test stand for the Quarter Scale team would improve the testing of the engines and the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The purpose of this research is to develop a decision support system that can assist in detecting partial failures in dynamic systems such as Fire Control System Tracking Radar (TR) onboard Naval Ships. Partial failures do not necessarily shut down the system immediately but cause degradation of operational performance. Previous work has shown that experts in the field of failure detection, test point insertion and Built-In-Test Equipment (BITE) can provide useful input in detecting partial failures. The Task 20 project was prematurely closed by DOE on the basis of becoming critical data to the Yucca Mountain project. Task 20 indeed delivered the first, published hydrothermal-ventilation model, MULTIFLUX V1.0 and V1.1 to BSC during 2001 to support the AMR Rev01 report. The numerical model is designed to predict temperature and humidity distributions in and around the emplacement drifts and on the waste packages stored in a ventilated, high-level nuclear waste repository.

Breast cancer is currently one of the major causes of death for women in the U.S. Mammography is currently the most effective method for detection of breast cancer and early detection has proven to be an efficient tool to reduce the number of deaths. In the "content based" image query, also referred to as "query by example," "similarity retrieval" or "sketch retrieval," the query image is provided by the user either as a sketch of the object, as the output of a scanner or a video camera. The phenomenon of aliasing is important when sampling analog signals. In cases where the signal is bandlimited, one can avoid aliasing by ensuring that the sampling rate is higher than the Nyquist rate . But in cases where the signal is not bandlimited , aliasing is unavoidable if the signal is not filtered before it is sampled. Methods of measuring electrical sensitivity of a dust layer have been outlined and the porous electrodes cell was used to measure the electrical resistivity of a dust layer and to determine the influence of various parameters. Dust layer thickness and applied voltage had no influence. Resistivity depended on particle size, packing density, temperature, and air relative humidity. Glass beads and limestone powders of different mean particle sizes were used. Temperature was varied from 20–100 °C and air moisture ranged from dry to near saturation. The results show that Tanzanian firms do not set goals with respect to quality and quality management, thus their qual- ity performance is generally poor. Dynamic systems that were once controlled by analog circuits are now controlled by digital computers. Presented is a comparison of the digital controllers presently used with magnetic suspension and balance systems. The overall responses of the systems are compared using a computer simulation of the magnetic suspension and balance system and the digital controllers. The comparisons include responses to both simulated force and position inputs. A preferred digital controller is determined from the simulated responses.

A large important blanking die for production of multiwick stoves oil tanks was damaged beyond repair during normal maintenance. A replacement die could not be made available immediately. Initially an alternative blank production system based upon the adaptation of the inhouse and locally available tools was set up. Subsequently a temporary low cost and a permanent replacement blanking die was designed, developed and manufactured out of pad welding of mild steel plate. Recommendations have been drawn in light of the experiences gained in the deployment of these appropriate methods.

Results of experiments to study the distributive mixing performance of Internal mixers are reported in this paper. Distributive mixing was assessed by monitoring the uniformity of sulphur distribution throughout rubber mixes subjected to a range of rotor revolutions. The results indicate that distributive mixing in a well controlled Internal mixer is rapid and unlikely to be a source of mix variability.
