Design Optimization Of Magnetic Bearings And Magnetic Suspension Systems, V. Dale Bloodgood Jr. Oct 1998

Design Optimization Of Magnetic Bearings And Magnetic Suspension Systems, V. Dale Bloodgood Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Magnetic suspension systems were first demonstrated as practical by Holmes and Beams in the 1930's. Since then, numerous academic researchers have worked with various types of these systems. Commercial applications have largely been limited to magnetic bearings for rotating machinery. Other applications that have held considerable promise include wind tunnel model suspensions, space payload pointing and vibration isolation systems, satellite momentum storage and control devices and electromagnetic launch systems. However, none of these have progressed significantly beyond the prototype stage. Maglev trains have not reached serious commercial service but are being aggressively developed in Germany and Japan.

Ir-Hot Gas Heat Source For Automated Tow Placement, Ray Walton Grenoble Apr 1998

Ir-Hot Gas Heat Source For Automated Tow Placement, Ray Walton Grenoble

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A series of five experiments on the NASA Langley automated tow placement robot revealed stagnation of gas flow in the nip region. Since the torches could not heat effectively in the nip region, the roller temperature was the dominant influence on interlaminar bond strength. The roller temperatures required for high bond strength caused resin and fiber on the panel top surface to adhere to the compaction roller. Resin and fiber was pulled from the panel surface and wrapped around the roller, which was a severe processing problem. A supplemental radiant heat source was designed to permit reductions in roller temperature. …

Placement Of Piezoelectric Actuators For Active Control Of Vibration Using Modal Parameters, Xuegeng Zhu Jan 1998

Placement Of Piezoelectric Actuators For Active Control Of Vibration Using Modal Parameters, Xuegeng Zhu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An equation is derived to model the piezoelectric actuators incorporation with flexible structures. This equation permits the comparison of the performance indices over the entire structure for a piezoelectric actuator with constant area, which is unachievable if the Finite Element Method is used for complicated structures.

An index has been developed for placement of piezoelectric actuator for control of vibration of a flexible structure. This index is derived from the definition of H2norm. Computation of the proposed index requires only the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of the structures of interest. The method is well suited to large …

Correlation Of Finite Element Prediction And Experimental Measurements Of Aircraft Panel Structural Vibration, Olaf L. Storaasli

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

With the rapid development of computational capabilities and the implementation of complex tools for commercial finite element programs, predicting structural dynamics and related acoustics of complex structures is presently achievable. Structural finite element modeling is a design tool widely utilized for analysis of problems of all kinds. However, high frequency vibration of complex structures, such as the reinforced aircraft panel used for this study, currently does not correlate well with experimental measurements using conventional modeling methods. An investigation into the commonly used modeling techniques as well as the new tools of commercial finite element analysis packages for the prediction of …

Development Of Curved-Plate Elements For The Exact Buckling Analysis Of Composite Plate Assemblies Including Transverse-Shear Effects, David Michael Mcgowan Apr 1997

Development Of Curved-Plate Elements For The Exact Buckling Analysis Of Composite Plate Assemblies Including Transverse-Shear Effects, David Michael Mcgowan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The analytical formulation of curved-plate non-linear equilibrium equations including transverse-shear-deformation effects is presented. The formulation uses the principle of virtual work. A unified set of non-linear strains that contains terms from both physical and tensorial strain measures is used. Linearized, perturbed equilibrium equations (stability equations) that describe the response of the plate just after buckling occurs are then derived after the application of several simplifying assumptions. These equations are then modified to allow the reference surface of the plate to be located at a distance zc, from the centroidal surface. The implementation of the new theory into the …

Analysis And Testing Of Plates With Piezoelectric Sensors And Actuators, Jeffrey S. Bevan Apr 1997

Analysis And Testing Of Plates With Piezoelectric Sensors And Actuators, Jeffrey S. Bevan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Piezoelectric material inherently possesses coupling between electrostatics and structural dynamics. Utilizing linear piezoelectric theory results in an intrinsically coupled pair of piezoelectric constitutive equations. One set describes the direct piezoelectric effect, where strains produce an electric field, and the other set describes the converse effect, where an applied electrical field produces strain. The purpose of this study is to compare the finite element analysis and experiments of a thin plate with bonded piezoelectric material.

Since an isotropic plate in combination with a thin piezoelectric layer constitutes a laminated composite, the classical laminate plate theory is used in the formulation to …

Part Form Errors Predicted From Machine Tool Performance Measurements, R. G. Wilhelm, N. Srinivasan, F. Farabaugh, R. Hocken

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Machine tool performance testing, as defined by IS0 230 and ANSI B5.54 has been successfully used to maintain and improve the accuracy and repeatability of production-level machine tools. In this study, a controlled series of experiments have been used to test the efficacy of these performance tests in the prediction of part form errors. Results are shown for flatness, squareness, position, and profile tolerances. The experimental results suggest that standard machine tool performance tests can also be used to predict the “best-case” tolerances that can be achieved for particular part features.

Arts, Computers And Artificial Intelligence, Sol Neeman Ph.D.

Engineering Studies Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Science and art seem to belong to different cultures. Science and technology, mainly the products of the intellect, use terminology and vocabulary that are concise and well defined. In contrast, in artistic expression, ambiguity is a powerful component. Still the relationship between these two different categories of human activity is interesting and fascinating. In this paper, a general comparison of these two disciplines will be introduced. Then the possibility of mechanical creation of art using computers and artificial intelligence will be discussed. This will be followed by two techniques which are used to create poetry and music. First, a statistical …

Effects Of Elevated Temperature On The Physical Aging Of A High Temperature Thermoplastic Resin And Composite, Mark Feldman Jul 1996

Effects Of Elevated Temperature On The Physical Aging Of A High Temperature Thermoplastic Resin And Composite, Mark Feldman

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Development of a High Speed Civil Transport is considered by the commercial aviation industry to be one of the next big challenges for our national aircraft industry. Critical to the success of this aircraft is the development of advanced polymeric composites for both the primary and secondary structures and the predictive methodology necessary for assessment of long term durability. While polymeric composites offer an excellent strength to weight ratio a key disadvantage is the time dependent properties exhibited by the polymer matrix which can age and ultimately effect the resultant stiffness of a laminate.

Experimental studies were performed to determine …

The results obtained using the finite element model are then compared with experimental …

Using Matlab To Illustrate The 'Phenomenon Of Aliasing', Sol Neeman, Ph.D. Jan 1995

Using Matlab To Illustrate The 'Phenomenon Of Aliasing', Sol Neeman, Ph.D.

Engineering Studies Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The phenomenon of aliasing is important when sampling analog signals. In cases where the signal is bandlimited, one can avoid aliasing by ensuring that the sampling rate is higher than the Nyquist rate . But in cases where the signal is not bandlimited , aliasing is unavoidable if the signal is not filtered before it is sampled. It is then crucial to understand the phenomenon in order to estimate the distortion generated when the signal is reconstructed from its samples. Using the software package MATLAB by MathWorks, Inc ., two examples are presented. The first is a pure sinusoid which …

Development Of Vibration And Sensitivity Analysis Capability Using The Theory Of Structural Variations, Ting-Yu Rong Jul 1994

Development Of Vibration And Sensitivity Analysis Capability Using The Theory Of Structural Variations, Ting-Yu Rong

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the author's previous work entitled "General Theorems of Topological Variations of Elastic Structures and the Method of Topological Variation," 1985, some interesting properties of skeletal structures have been discovered. These properties have been described as five theorems and synthesized as a theory, called the theory of structural variations (TSV). Based upon this theory, an innovative analysis tool, called the structural variation method (SVM), has been derived for static analysis of skeletal structures (one-dimensional finite element systems).

The objective of this dissertation research is to extend TSV and SVM from one-dimensional finite element systems to multi-dimensional ones and from statics …

A New Adjoint Variable Method For The Sensitivity Analysis Of Dynamic Responses, Krishnamoorthy Ramesh Oct 1993

A New Adjoint Variable Method For The Sensitivity Analysis Of Dynamic Responses, Krishnamoorthy Ramesh

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A new adjoint variable method has been formulated for finding the sensitivity derivatives of dynamic system responses. Though the method can be based on any step-by-step time marching scheme, the Wilson Theta Method has been chosen as the basis of the new formulation . Wilson Theta Method is an implicit numerical integration scheme for finding the dynamic system responses. The new formulation uses the differential form of equations of motion as given by the Wilson Theta Method in its formulation of the adjoint equation. The conventional methods used for finding the sensitivity derivatives, namely, the direct differentiation technique, the central …

Finite-element modeling for ZIP3D solution was performed in two stages. The first stage modeling modeled the mirror configuration on a global basis for calculation of accurate nodal displacements. The second stage modeling reduced the modeled mirror configuration to a set of localized models for calculation of …

Modal Analysis Of Gyroscopically Coupled Sound-Structure Interaction Problems, Vijay B. Bokil Apr 1992

Modal Analysis Of Gyroscopically Coupled Sound-Structure Interaction Problems, Vijay B. Bokil

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In many practical situations we encounter sound-structure interaction between the fluid in a cavity and the flexible wall on the boundary. The aircraft cabin interacting with its fuselage and double-leaf partition walls interacting with the enclosed cavity are some of the typical examples. The vibratory behavior of the structure and the acoustical pressure inside the cavity are affected by this interaction.

In most of the cases, the governing differential equations for the coupled system can be shown to involve gyroscopic coupling. A special method has been applied to decouple the equations in terms of pairs of generalized coordinates and the …

Development Of A Model Updating Technique For Controls-Structures Integrated Design Optimization, Angela Georges Apr 1992

Development Of A Model Updating Technique For Controls-Structures Integrated Design Optimization, Angela Georges

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A model updating technique is developed with the intent of providing an efficient means of improving the accuracy of the modelling of the vibrational qualities of a large, flexible structure as it undergoes an integrated controls-structures design optimization. The proposed technique utilizes eigenvalue/eigenvector sensitivity information, two different model reduction methods which assign weights of importance to the vibrational modes of the structure, and modal switching based upon the modal weights determined by the model reduction methods. Issues associated with the numerical implementation of the proposed technique, such as discontinuities induced by modal switching, are also addressed.

The proposed model updating …

Finite Element Frequency Domain Solution Of Nonlinear Panel Flutter With Temperature Effects And Fatigue Life Analysis, David Yongxiang Xue Oct 1991

Finite Element Frequency Domain Solution Of Nonlinear Panel Flutter With Temperature Effects And Fatigue Life Analysis, David Yongxiang Xue

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A frequency domain solution method for nonlinear panel flutter with thermal effects using a consistent finite element formulation has been developed. The von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relation is used to account for large deflections, the quasi-steady first-order piston theory is employed for aerodynamic loading and the quasi-steady thermal stress theory is applied for the thermal stresses with a given change of the temperature distribution, ΔΤ (x, y, z). The equation of motion under a combined thermal-aerodynamic loading can be mathematically separated into two equations and then solved in sequence: (1) thermal-aerodynamic postbuckling and (2) limit-cycle oscillation. The Newton-Raphson iteration technique …

Dynamic Test/Analysis Correlation Using Reduced Analytical Models, Paul E. Mcgowan Jul 1991

Dynamic Test/Analysis Correlation Using Reduced Analytical Models, Paul E. Mcgowan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Test/analysis correlation is an important aspect of the verification of analysis models which are used to predict on-orbit response characteristics of large space structures. This thesis summarizes the study of using reduced analysis models for performing dynamic test/analysis correlation. The reduced test-analysis model (TAM) has the same number of degrees-of-freedom (DOF) as the number of test measurements. This allows the direct comparison of modal parameters between ground vibration test results and finite element model (FEM) analysis results. The TAM can also be used for pre-test analysis and to aid in the post-test mathematical model updating process.

Herein, four methods for …

Automating Tolerance Synthesis: A Framework And Tools, Stephen C.-Y. Lu, Robert G. Wilhelm

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

This paper describes CASCADE-T—a new approach to tolerance synthesis that uses a complete representation of the conditional tolerance relations that exist between features of a part under design. Conditional tolerances are automatically determined from functional requirements and shape information. Tolerance primitives based on the virtual boundary requirements approach to tolerance representation are composed to form more complex tolerance relationships. Artificial intelligence techniques, including a constraint network, frame-based system, and dependency tracking are used to support flexible and detailed computation for tolerance analysis and synthesis.

The Effectiveness Of Viscoelastic Damping Treatments On A Flexible Manipulator Subjected To Torsional Loads, Leah L. Remias Oct 1990

The Effectiveness Of Viscoelastic Damping Treatments On A Flexible Manipulator Subjected To Torsional Loads, Leah L. Remias

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The advent of new technology has led to an increasing number of missions in space. The space shuttle Remote Manipulator System (RMS) is a lightweight flexible manipulator currently used in NASA space missions. The future role of the RMS and similar flexible manipulators may include in-space construction and assembly tasks. Because these tasks require precise motion and short settling time of the end-point oscillations, effective vibration control schemes are being investigated.

Passive damping techniques have shown to provide a considerable amount of damping in controlling flexural vibrations. In this research passive damping via constrained viscoelastic damping treatments is explored as …
