Bubble Electrospinning For Mass Production Of Nanofibers, Yong Liu, Ji-Huan He Jan 2007

Bubble Electrospinning For Mass Production Of Nanofibers, Yong Liu, Ji-Huan He

Ji-Huan He

A new bottom-up gas-jet electrospinning process for mass production is presented. A bubble-induced cone on the surface of polymer solution is equivalent to the Taylor cone in traditional electrospinning, which is a must for producing nanofibers. In this study bubbles are produced by compressed air or nitrogen through a nozzle settled in the bottom of the solution. Multiple jets are observed during the electrospinning process as predicted for it is easy to many bubble-induced cones on the solution surface. The new electrospinning mechanism can be used for mass production of nanofibers.

Modification Of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes By Microwave Digestion Method As Electrocatalyst Supports For Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Applications, Fang-Tzu Chuang

Fang-Tzu Chuang

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) which were directly synthesized on carbon cloth were modified by a microwave digestion method in 5M HNO3 for supporting Pt nanoparticles. The characterizations of modified CNTs were carried out by TEM, XPS, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The HRTEM image shows the caps of MWCNTs are opened after modifying by microwave digestion method. The open-end and undamaged MWCNTs can provide a larger surface area for supporting more catalysts. Furthermore, the methanol electrocatalytic oxidation of microwave digestion treated Pt/MWCNTs electrode shows higher current density than pristine and nitric acid-treated MWCNTs from cyclic voltammograms. This can be an effective …

This paper reports the fabrication method of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) microlens array based on the replica molding process, casting a liquid PDMS into concave microlens molds. Concave microlens molds were fabricated through spin-coating processes suspended a liquid PMMA film on the micro-drilled hole, leading to the formation of the special curvature. Then, PDMS microlens arrays and diffusers were fabricated by replica molding and discussed in this study. The fabricated microlenses have both good surface roughness and high-quality optical properties. Therefore, diffusers were fabricated by two-step replica molding. A high-intensity He–Ne laser beam was uniformly spread through diffusers. Experimental tests demonstrated that …

Study Of Leading Factors In Formation Of Surface Wavy Structures On A Rubber Material, Fang-Tzu Chuang May 2006

Study Of Leading Factors In Formation Of Surface Wavy Structures On A Rubber Material, Fang-Tzu Chuang

Fang-Tzu Chuang

Wavy structures are often observed on the surface of a rubber material (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) covered with a thin metallic film. In this study we demonstrate that the orientation, periodicity, location of formation, and range of periodicity of the wavy structures can be regulated by three leading factors including the surface pattern, substrate hardness and the thickness of the metallic film. Results show the orientation of the wavy structures can be adjusted by the location, shape and size of the surface patterns. Enhancement of the substrate hardness can prevent forming random wavy structures. The thickness of surface metallic film significantly influenced …

The Influence Of Titanium And Cerium On Microstructure And Properties Of Fe-C-Cr-Nb Alloys, Zeljko J. Kamberovic Jan 2005

The Influence Of Titanium And Cerium On Microstructure And Properties Of Fe-C-Cr-Nb Alloys, Zeljko J. Kamberovic

Zeljko J Kamberovic

In this paper, the influence of titanium and cerium on the microstructure and properties of Fe- C-Cr-Nb alloys are examined, in both as-cast and heat treated state. These elements affect the crystallisation process of Fe-C-Cr-Nb alloys and the transformation of austenite during the cooling process after solidification. Titanium changed the morphology of NbC carbides. Further, in the austenite of the examined Fe-C-Cr-Nb-Ti alloys, very fine particles of precipitated secondary carbide can be seen. The alloy containing 0,28%Ti and 0,19%Ce has martensite-perlite-austenitic matrix microstructure in as-cast condition. Adding titanium and cerium to Fe-C-Cr-Nb alloys will also changed its properties, since the …

Biomimetic Actuators: Where Technology And Cell Biology Merge [Review Article], Michael Knoblauch, Winfried Peters Nov 2004

Biomimetic Actuators: Where Technology And Cell Biology Merge [Review Article], Michael Knoblauch, Winfried Peters

Winfried S. Peters

The structural and functional analysis of biological macromolecules has reached a level of resolution that allows mechanistic interpretations of molecular action, giving rise to the view of enzymes as molecular machines. This machine analogy is not merely metaphorical, as bio-analogous molecular machines actually are being used as motors in the fields of nanotechnology and robotics. As the borderline between molecular cell biology and technology blurs, developments in the engineering and material sciences become increasingly instructive sources of models and concepts for biologists. In this review, we provide a – necessarily selective – summary of recent progress in the usage of …

Yun Hau Ng

The need for cleaner environment concerns motivates the development of more efficient catalytic system. Based on this consideration, recently a novel catalyst named "Phase-boundary catalyst", a bimodal amphiphilic solid catalyst, was proposed. It was demonstrated that the catalytic system containing phase-boundary catalyst required neither stirring to make an emulsion nor addition of a co-solvent to make a homogeneous solution to drive the reaction. The driving force that has prompted this paper is to investigate the surface structure of alkylsilylated HZSM-5 as phase-boundary catalyst. Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) of ammonia and, 13C and 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy were used to elucidate …
