Development Of Entrepreneurial Attitudes Assessment Instrument For Freshman Students, Todd M. Fernandez, Genisson Sliva Coutinho, Michael D. Wilson, Stephen R. Hoffmann Jan 2015

Development Of Entrepreneurial Attitudes Assessment Instrument For Freshman Students, Todd M. Fernandez, Genisson Sliva Coutinho, Michael D. Wilson, Stephen R. Hoffmann

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

An increasing population of university programs and quantity of curricular content focused on entrepreneurship poses both enormous opportunities for student growth, and numerous practical challenges. Prior work has largely focused on pre-post assessment of student learning, shifts in‘mindset’, activity effectiveness, mapping of student outcomes, and implications of student learning on career success. A baseline of freshman student attitudes towards entrepreneurship, outside of specifically focused entrepreneurial leaning, has significant potential to identify and inform programming in entrepreneurship, as well as general curriculums and pedagogy. An improved understanding of student’s constructive and cognitive influences in entrepreneurial education will serve to better inform the …

In the Engineering workplace, one must be able to negotiate many genres of writing: he or she must deliver updates, understand technical requirements, weigh project priorities, develop and carry out problem-solving techniques, all while using different forms of technical communication. Engineering work relies on the ability to flexibly transition between a variety of technical writing genres, while also navigating the broad array of technologies required to effectively complete these projects. However, the genres and types of writing present in the workplace do not always reflect the genres and types of writing undergraduate Engineering students complete during coursework. From a Rhetorical …

Engineering design has transformed significantly due to advances in embedded system design and computer technologies. Almost every mechanical design today has some electrical and electronic components. Many products manufactured today contain both electrical and mechanical components and systems. Mechatronics is a design process that is multi-disciplinary in nature and integrates principles of many engineering disciplines including, but not limited to, mechanical engineering and mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering and electrical engineering technology, and controls engineering. Mechatronic systems can be found in many different places today. These range from computer hard drives and robotic assembly systems, to washing machines, coffee makers, …

The emerging engineering field of mechatronics has caught the attention of many engineering professionals, academics and government officials in recent years, nationally and globally. The main reason for this is that many modern products are no longer purely electrical and electronic or mechanical. Moreover, they are integrated multidisciplinary products which are made from subsystems which require engineering knowledge of different disciplines. Hence, increasing number of universities is offering courses, certificates and programs at undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of mechatronics. This paper presents an educational program in mechatronics at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad, …

Distance Education has been implemented widely in different curricula at many institutions; different means have been used to ensure the delivery. This article introduces unique combination of different mechanisms in implementing the active/synchronous distance delivery of hands-on course(s) that is compatible and similar to the face-to-face on-campus course(s).There are three major developmental stages of these online courses - curriculum design, methodologies, and assessment to ensure the effectiveness of distance delivery of technical courses in engineering technology. The processes of curriculum design for the Embedded System Designs are discussed: (a) The development of course and labs modules for hands-on technical courses. …

Teacher Influence On Elementary School Students’ Participation In Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics, Courtney Hartman Jan 2015

Teacher Influence On Elementary School Students’ Participation In Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics, Courtney Hartman

Honors College Theses

The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of elementary school teachers on encouraging students’ interest and participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The researcher sought to understand what methods teachers use in their classrooms to encourage students to participate in STEM subjects and programs. This mixed methods study consisted of a questionnaire to collect quantitative data, as well as an interview of selected teachers who participated in the questionnaire to collect qualitative data. The data was analyzed to determine the overall perceptions of teachers regarding the importance of encouraging students to participate in STEM. The qualitative …

Use Of Single Stage Model Rockets To Teach Some Engineering Principles And Practices To First Year Engineering And Engineering Technology Students, Hüseyin Sarper, Linda Vahala Jan 2015

Use Of Single Stage Model Rockets To Teach Some Engineering Principles And Practices To First Year Engineering And Engineering Technology Students, Hüseyin Sarper, Linda Vahala

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Model rocketry has been called miniature astronautics; a technology in miniature, a hobby, a sport, a technological recreation, an educational tool, and it is all of these things. This paper will describe student projects using model rockets and engines to learn engineering principles for launching rockets and determining the apogee. Model rocketry is a powerful tool for instructors who wish to incorporate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into a fun, engaging, and challenging activity for first year engineering students. The apogee can be determined using four distinct methods: trigonometry using hand held angle measuring tools, onboard altimeter devices, analytical calculations …

Strategies for improving student success are particularly important in high-demand fields like science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). As the U.S. experiences a decline in skilled STEM workers and a growing number of racial/ethnic minorities, it is critical that more attention be paid to the college success of underrepresented populations majoring in STEM. While some strategies for increasing STEM student success have focused on social-psychological factors such as academic self-efficacy and resilience, little attention has been given to these factors among specific minority groups in STEM such as Black men. To extend the current literature, interviews with 27 Black male …

The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Student Chapter at The Ohio State University (OSU) is unique from other ASEE student organizations. Traditionally, ASEE chapters are not outreach-focused organizations. However, the OSU Chapter has placed a core focus on community involvement. Over time, the group has participated in numerous outreach events focused on increasing student knowledge of and interest in engineering. These outreach events have provided students with exposure to the field of engineering. They have also had several effects on the structure and focus of the OSU ASEE Student Chapter. Over the past year, the layout of our Executive …

Development And Operation Of A Mobile Test Facility For Education, Christopher Davis Jan 2015

Development And Operation Of A Mobile Test Facility For Education, Christopher Davis

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The automotive industry saw a large shift towards vehicle electrification after the turn of the century. It became necessary to ensure that new and existing engineers were qualified to design and calibrate these new systems. To ensure this training, Michigan Tech received a grant to develop a curriculum based around vehicle electrification. As part of this agenda, the Michigan Tech Mobile Laboratory was developed to provide hands-on training for professional engineers and technicians in hybrid electric vehicles and vehicle electrification. The Mobile Lab has since then increased the scope of the delivered curriculum to include other automotive areas and even …
