Teachers in Iowa high schools are expected to have students achieve the competencies identified by the State of Iowa Department of Education. The competencies for Iowa high school engineering-related classes were published in 1991. They were compiled as a result of Senate File 449. Industry leaders, as well as teachers, throughout the state of Iowa who were actively utilizing drafting skills in 1991 helped create the outcome competencies. Since that time, these competencies have not been reviewed or revised and may need updating. The demands of industry change so frequently it is possible these are no longer the appropriate competencies. …

A study conducted among students of a leading Indian institute of engineering and technology yielded useful and significant insights into the preferred rewards and motivators, personal values and background, attitudes and job prospects of prospective engineers, considered to be the cream of Indian youth and likely to assume positions of leadership in the fields of engineering and management. The findings of the study could help solve prevalent problems in designing organisational structures and reward systems and in improving the quality of engineering education and prospects for engineers in Indian organisations.

In the summer of 1997, the University of Missouri-Rolla's (UMR) Engineering Management Department began offering its first completely Web-based course. This graduate level course, Advanced Production Management, was designed to utilize a combination of Web-based tools to create a conducive, yet non-traditional, learning environment for its students. The students in the course did not physically have to attend any lectures and only met for an initial and final class period. The remainder of the course was conducted exclusively via Web-based tools. One widely accepted method for increasing the chances of success of female engineering and science students and faculty alike is to provide access to female role models and mentors. Advances in communications and computer technology, as well as in human-computer interfaces, have enabled concurrent advances in Web-based education. A number of case studies concerning applications of Web-based education for both distance learning and on-campus programs have been published. Primarily, these studies have focused on individual assessments of the web-based technologies. In contrast, this paper will provide a broad based assessment of applied web-based technology for higher education. This research was conducted via a survey completed by university and college faculty from numerous 4-year institutions. The College of Engineering at San Jose State University is scheduled for an accreditation visit in Fall 1999 and has decided to seek reaccreditation under the ABET 2000 criteria. An assessment implementation project has been active for the past two years within the College; with primary objectives of refining missions for programs, defining program outcome objectives, determining which components to assess, and developing appropriate metrics and methods. In 1997, the School of Engineering of the United States Air Force Institute of Technology began exploring ways of automating the academic course scheduling process. The administration desired an expedient approach for course scheduling which supports the institute's mission of "providing scientific and technological education" to officers from all branches of military service, as well as international military forces. The scheduling approach needed to be flexible, efficient, and represent the institute's values and principles. The present study is an attempt to probe, explore, and provide an appropriate educational method for engineering retraining programs. The central concerns and implications of this study revolve around: who engineers are, how they learn, why they need to learn, and what they have to learn. The existing retraining programs also will be evaluated in order to develop a suitable retraining program for engineers.
