Failure Case Studies And Ethics In Engineering Mechanics Courses, Norbert J. Delatte
Failure Case Studies And Ethics In Engineering Mechanics Courses, Norbert J. Delatte
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Often, engineering students do not study engineering failures or discuss ethics until they take upper division undergraduate courses or graduate level courses. One drawback to this approach is that problems analyzed in introductory courses are often contrived, uninteresting, and bear little relation to the problems encountered in engineering practice. At the point when educators need to grab the student's interest in engineering most, they should show the excitement and relevance of the profession. Another is that the students encounter the issues of ethics, responsibility, and accountability that are often highlighted by a failure, late in their engineering education. As a …

Integrating Core Industrial Engineering Courses Through A Manufacturing Case Study, Susan L. Murray
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a summary of research conducted by a team of students from the University of Missouri-Rolla. The manufacturing processes at a local firm were evaluated. The case study illustrates the benefits of applying ergonomic, safety, work measurement, and quality assessment tools together. Additionally this team approach illustrates the importance of educating engineering students to think across course and discipline lines. The paper concludes with generalized recommendations for other educational applications.

Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Engineering Department of San Jose State University has been developing a new mechatronics engineering laboratory since Fall 1995. This laboratory is intended to provide engineering students on the application of electronics, microprocessors and software in designing electro-mechanical systems, mechatronics products and process control systems. The laboratory development is a principal part of an award for “Undergraduate Curriculum Development on Mechatronics System Engineering” by the division of undergraduate education of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Major task of the new laboratory is to support instruction and provide hands-on study of two of the five new courses: ME106 Fundamentals of …

Old Dominion University has developed an extensive distance learning system that includes 40 remote sites. A majority of the sites are located at community colleges. There are 30 sites in Virginia, three sites in North Carolina, one site in Washington State and one site in Arizona. In addition, there are four sites at Higher Education Centers in Virginia and one site at a local industrial facility. The Civil Engineering Technology curriculum requires three laboratory courses, which are a challenge in the distance learning environment because of the lack of laboratory equipment and computers at the broadcast sites. The three courses …
