This paper will discuss the progress of curriculum development under an NSF, CCLI-EMD sponsored work, “Development of Project-Based Introductory to Materials Engineering Modules” (DUE # #0341633). A multi-university team of faculty are developing six lecture and three laboratory modules for use in Introductory to Materials courses. This course is required by most engineering programs in the U.S., with an annual enrollment of 50,000 students. This freshman/ sophomore class is an ideal place to excite students about their engineering majors and expose them to engineering design experiences. PRIME Modules, Project Based Resources for Introduction to Materials Engineering, are being developed that …

Use Of Collaborative Learning Exercises To Increase Student Motivation And Learning In An Introduction To Materials Engineering Course, Stacy Gleixner, Hilary Lackritz Jun 2004

Use Of Collaborative Learning Exercises To Increase Student Motivation And Learning In An Introduction To Materials Engineering Course, Stacy Gleixner, Hilary Lackritz

Faculty Publications

A collection of collaborative, in-class exercises have been designed for use in a freshmen/sophomore level Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering class. The activities are team based problems that include open ended design problems, calculation questions, and thought problems on unanswered research questions. The activities have been designed with the goal of having one or two a week embedded in a more traditional lecture setting. The exercises relate to the topics covered in most standard Introduction to Materials classes (crystal structure, mechanical properties, polymers, phase diagrams…). Each activity is designed specifically to engage the students in the lecture and excite …

Description And Assessment Of A Business Plan Competition And New Venture Fair At San José State University, Malu Roldan, Asbjorn Osland, Michael Solt, Burton Dean Jun 2004

Description And Assessment Of A Business Plan Competition And New Venture Fair At San José State University, Malu Roldan, Asbjorn Osland, Michael Solt, Burton Dean

Faculty Publications

After the first business plan competition, in May 2003, San José State University (SJSU) faculty and community entrepreneurs serving on the university’s Silicon Valley Center for Entrepreneurship (SVCE) concluded that the process should be spread over an academic year. Hence, the New Venture Fair (NVF) was born, which was held Dec. 16, 2003. The feedback from all sources has been very positive regarding the NVF. A significant NVF exhibit was the Hewlett Packard Mobile Computing Grant (HPMCG). All teams completed projects that were impressive to most observers from the university and greater community but additional lessons were learned that will …

Using Open-Ended Design Projects In An Open Lab To Teach Lifelong Learning Skills In An Ic Design Course, David Parent Jun 2004

Using Open-Ended Design Projects In An Open Lab To Teach Lifelong Learning Skills In An Ic Design Course, David Parent

Faculty Publications

The ABET criterion, recognition for and the ability to engage in life-long learning, is one of the most important, given that we as engineering educators can not teach every concept that students will encounter over the span of a 20-40 year career as an engineer. We believe that one method to teach and verify this critical skill in the area of Integrated Circuit (IC) design, is to have the students learn IC CAD tools by following well crafted tutorials and then complete open-ended IC design projects in an open lab. The project is supposed to be a full custom design …

A Course Assessment Of The Microelectronics Process Engineering Program At Sjsu, Gregory Young, Stacy H. Gleixner, David W. Parent, Yasser Dessouky, Emily Allen, Linda Vanasupa Jun 2002

A Course Assessment Of The Microelectronics Process Engineering Program At Sjsu, Gregory Young, Stacy H. Gleixner, David W. Parent, Yasser Dessouky, Emily Allen, Linda Vanasupa

The program assessment strategy of San Jose State University's new interdisciplinary curriculum in Microelectronics Process Engineering is described. Vertical integration of specific class and program learning objectives allows for a clear and efficient method to evaluate the continued growth and improvement of the program. The program assessment process relies on clearly defined and detailed program and course learning objectives that are linked vertically to ABET outcomes. In addition, we discuss briefly the structure of the program and the "hands-on" experience that we provide the students.

Microelectronics Process Engineering At San Jose State University: A Manufacturing-Oriented Interdisciplinary Degree Program, Emily Allen, Stacy H. Gleixner, David W. Parent, Greg Young, Yasser Dessouky, Linda Vanasupa Mar 2002

Microelectronics Process Engineering At San Jose State University: A Manufacturing-Oriented Interdisciplinary Degree Program, Emily Allen, Stacy H. Gleixner, David W. Parent, Greg Young, Yasser Dessouky, Linda Vanasupa

Faculty Publications

San Jose State University's new interdisciplinary curriculum in Microelectronics Process Engineering is described. This baccalaureate program emphasizes hands-on thin-film fabrication experience, manufacturing methods such as statistical process control, and fundamentals of materials science and semiconductor device physics. Each course of the core laboratory sequence integrates fabrication knowledge with process engineering and manufacturing methods. The curriculum development process relies on clearly defined and detailed program and course learning objectives. We also briefly discuss our strategy of making process engineering experiences accessible for all engineering students through both Lab Module and Statistics Module series.

Materials Science and Engineering straddles the fence between engineering and science. In order to produce more work-ready undergraduates, we offer a new interdisciplinary program to educate materials engineers with a particular emphasis on microelectronics-related manufacturing. The bachelor's level curriculum in Microelectronics Process Engineering (J1ProE) is interdisciplinary, drawing from materials, chemical, electrical and industrial engineering programs and tied together with courses, internships and projects which integrate thin film processing with manufacturing control methods. Our graduates are prepared for entry level engineering jobs that require knowledge and experience in microelectronics-type fabrication and statistics applications in manufacturing engineering. They also go on to …

Effectiveness Of A Multimedia General Education Course, Patricia Backer Jun 2000

Effectiveness Of A Multimedia General Education Course, Patricia Backer

Faculty Publications

The current paper describes the design, development, and evaluation of self-paced multimedia modules that are used in an advanced General Education course at San Jose State University. The design and development cycle of these modules began in 1994 and continues to this date. The General Education course, Technology and Civilization (TECH 198), is designed to introduce students to the realm of history and usage of technology in society and to increase their awareness of both the uncertainties as well as the promises of the utilization of technology as a creative human enterprise. During the summer session 1999, the completed modules …

The College of Engineering at San Jose State University is scheduled for an accreditation visit in Fall 1999 and has decided to seek reaccreditation under the ABET 2000 criteria. An assessment implementation project has been active for the past two years within the College; with primary objectives of refining missions for programs, defining program outcome objectives, determining which components to assess, and developing appropriate metrics and methods. Longer term objectives of this project are to establish a continuous quality improvement philosophy in the College and to provide information for the ABET accreditation review. This paper is an evaluation of the status …
