Differential equations are at the core of any undergraduate engineering as well as of science programs. While a course in differential equations is required by any engineering degree, it is not a requirement for engineering technology programs, which usually require mathematics up to calculus I. This paper discusses the undergraduate engineering technology curricula, focusing on how differential equations are taught to engineering technology students and how they are covered in the programs. In particular, the paper will discuss the treatment of differential equations in electrical circuits and heat transfer courses.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid halide perovskites have become a versatile material in diverse applications like optoelectronics, lighting and display, magnetism, etc. These materials are often termed as layered hybrid halide perovskites (LHHPs) due to their unique structure with alternate organic and inorganic layers. The presence of insulating organic layers separates the inorganic perovskite slabs, creating a quantum-confined architectural configuration. This unique configuration endows these materials with a spectrum of distinctive functionalities, encompassing photovoltaics, lighting and displays, second harmonic generation, optical limiting, ferroelectricity, and ferromagnetism. Based on the density functional theory framework, the structural stability of phosphorene allotropes and its various nanostructures are ensured. The various allotropes of phosphorene and its nanostructures such as nanosheets, nanoribbon and nanotubes are used as adsorbing materials for various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as alcohols, chloroform, amines and aldehydes. The results of adsorption energy are used to confirm physisorption or chemisorption of VOCs on phosphorene. In addition, the charge transfer outcome suggests whether phosphorene is acting as acceptor or donor of electrons upon interaction of target VOCs.

This WIP qualitative research paper explores faculty experiences with implementing oral exams in high-enrollment undergraduate engineering courses at a research university. With a primary goal to improve conceptual mastery, as well as a desire to ensure academic integrity in the sudden move to remote instruction at the height of the pandemic, a group of faculty in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments implemented oral assessments in their own engineering courses across several quarters. The design of solid-state electrolyte (SSE) composites involves the fundamental study of transport properties, such as ionic conductivity. This transport property is influenced by the transport mechanisms of the charge species inside the composite, such as diffusion and migration. In this work, we perform the measurement of these three parameters through defined techniques. The resulting parameters were: ionic conductivity, the diffusion coefficient, and the Li+ transference number.

Identifying motion vectors that characterize two-dimensional image transitions, usually from video frames, is necessary to estimate motion.
Optical flow is a motion-tracking technique that estimates the trajectory and velocity of a moving object in a video by shifting each pixel between frames using displacement vectors. Team conflict is a naturally emerging phenomenon resulting from individuals' interactions during project execution. Cross-disciplinary teams can experience higher levels of conflict than single-discipline teams because of the increased diversity of knowledge and perspectives. Research has shown that team conflict can emerge from different types of disagreements (cognitive and interpersonal), which have different implications for team functioning. Past empirical research has focused on the impact of both conflict types independent from each other while overlooking their combined effects. This multi-methods study explores changes in engineering interest and identity of middle and high school students (n = 79) attending introductory-level engineering summer camps at a large western land grant university. This project will focus on one section of the course, with the primary objective being to control the brightness of an LED based on input received from an ambient light sensor. This project aims to develop a battery hardware simulator, which will serve as a tool for studying microgrids. The primary objective is to create a simulation system that can emulate various battery technologies that are used in microgrids, including lithium-ion and lead acid. By utilizing this battery simulator, Cal Poly students can safely test battery management systems and battery-sensitive electronics without the inherent risks associated with real batteries. This course covers the electrical characteristics of fundamental circuit components including resistors, capacitors and inductors in DC circuits, single-phase AC and three-phase AC circuits. Fundamental concepts of AC power and phasors are examined. We are creating a suite of tools and techniques based on optics to be used for teaching a variety of engineering topics. Each tool is intended for non-expert use and without the need for high-end equipment such as vibration-free optical tables. Here we report progress on three such tools: image-plane digital holography for measuring mechanical deformation; schlieren imaging of convective flows using a smart phone; and a simple optical communication protocol using LabVIEW.
