An Adaptable Fuzzy-Based Model For Predicting Link Quality In Robot Networks., Christopher J. Lowrance May 2016

An Adaptable Fuzzy-Based Model For Predicting Link Quality In Robot Networks., Christopher J. Lowrance

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is often essential for robots to maintain wireless connectivity with other systems so that commands, sensor data, and other situational information can be exchanged. Unfortunately, maintaining sufficient connection quality between these systems can be problematic. Robot mobility, combined with the attenuation and rapid dynamics associated with radio wave propagation, can cause frequent link quality (LQ) issues such as degraded throughput, temporary disconnects, or even link failure. In order to proactively mitigate such problems, robots must possess the capability, at the application layer, to gauge the quality of their wireless connections. However, many of the existing approaches lack adaptability or …

Impact Of Clustering Microgrids On Their Stability And Resilience During Blackouts, Mahmoud S. Saleh, Ammar Althaibani, Yusef Esa, Yassine Mhandi, Ahmed Mohamed

Publications and Research

In this paper, the impact of clustering multiple microgrids during blackouts, on their stability and supply availability, will be investigated. Microgrids have the capability of satisfying their emergency loads during blackouts. However, distributed energy resources (DERs)-dominated microgrids are affected by the uncertainty of their input energy supply, e.g. impact of solar irradiance on photovoltaic (PV) output. Moreover, an individual islanded microgrid is prone to instability issues due to large sudden load/generation changes. In order to increase the supply security, and enhance system stability, we propose to use the existing distribution grid infrastructure, if applicable, during blackouts to form microgrid clusters. …

Folded Meandered Monopole For Emerging Smart Metering & M2m Applications In The Lower Uhf Band Primary Tabs, Abraham Loutridis, Matthias John, Max Ammann

Conference Papers

A compact folded meander-line monopole for smart metering and M2M applications is presented. It operates over a tunable frequency range of 412-475 MHz. The miniaturization is based on a double-sided meandering structure and the rear positioning of the feeding and shorting strips. A sliding via connector is used for tuning. The proposed antenna is compact 15 mm (0.02 λ0) × 42.3 mm (0.058 λ0), low cost and easily fabricated. A 21-24% total efficiency was provided across the tunable band. Installed performance was evaluated in a meter housing placed on a concrete wall. Measured and simulated results are provided.

Diffractive Propagation And Recovery Of Modulated (Including Chaotic) Electromagnetic Waves Through Uniform Atmosphere And Modified Von Karman Phase Turbulence, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Fathi H.A. Mohamed Apr 2016

Diffractive Propagation And Recovery Of Modulated (Including Chaotic) Electromagnetic Waves Through Uniform Atmosphere And Modified Von Karman Phase Turbulence, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Fathi H.A. Mohamed

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In a parallel approach to recently-used transfer function formalism, a study involving diffraction of modulated electromagnetic (EM) waves through uniform and phase-turbulent atmospheres is reported in this paper. Specifically, the input wave is treated as a modulated optical carrier, represented by use of a sinusoidal phasor with a slowly timevarying envelope. Using phasors and (spatial) Fourier transforms, the complex phasor wave is transmitted across a uniform or turbulent medium using the Kirchhoff-Fresnel integral and the random phase screen.

Some preliminary results are presented comparing non-chaotic and chaotic information transmission through turbulence, outlining possible improvement in performance utilizing the robust features …

Differential Tilt Variance Effects Of Turbulence In Imagery: Comparing Simulation With Theory, Daniel A. Lemaster, Russell C. Hardie, Szymon Gladysz, Matthew D. Howard, Michael Armand Rucci, Matthew E. Trippel, Jonathan D. Power, Barry K. Karch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Differential tilt variance is a useful metric for interpreting the distorting effects of turbulence in incoherent imaging systems. In this paper, we compare the theoretical model of differential tilt variance to simulations. Simulation is based on a Monte Carlo wave optics approach with split step propagation. Results show that the simulation closely matches theory. The results also show that care must be taken when selecting a method to estimate tilts.

Proportionate Adaptive Filtering For Block-Sparse System Identification, Jianming Liu, Steven L. Grant Apr 2016

Proportionate Adaptive Filtering For Block-Sparse System Identification, Jianming Liu, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a new family of proportionate normalized least mean square (PNLMS) adaptive algorithms that improve the performance of identifying block-sparse systems is proposed. The main proposed algorithm, called block-sparse PNLMS (BS-PNLMS), is based on the optimization of a mixed norm of the adaptive filter's coefficients. It is demonstrated that both the NLMS and the traditional PNLMS are special cases of BS-PNLMS. Meanwhile, a block-sparse improved PNLMS (BS-IPNLMS) is also derived for both sparse and dispersive impulse responses. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed BS-PNLMS and BS-IPNLMS algorithms outperformed the NLMS, PNLMS and IPNLMS algorithms with only a modest …

Large-Area Object Search And Recovery Using Sector-Based Aerial Acousto-Optic Scanning And Reflection Sensing, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Salaheddeen G. Bugoffa

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A sector-based angular scanning system intended to identify and spatially locate relatively small objects scattered over a large terrain is described in this paper. The system is modeled as a planar surface on the horizontal (XY) plane, with an acousto-optic Bragg cell on board an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operating in the XZ plane.

The Bragg cell is excited by a chirped RF signal with a designed frequency ramp. As the scanning beam reflects off the horizontal surface, a detector placed strategically at a suitable altitude (in the analysis shown to be on board the UAV itself) picks up the …

In this article, we propose a new architecture for AC-MWN. Cognitive radio is a technique to adaptively use the spectrum so that the resource can be used more efficiently in a low-cost way. A multihop wireless network can be deployed quickly and flexibly without fixed infrastructure. In our proposed new architecture, we study backbone routing schemes with network cognition, and a routing scheme with network coding and spectrum adaptation. A testbed is implemented to test the proposed schemes for AC-MWN. In addition to basic measurements, we implement a video streaming application based on the proposed AC-MWN architecture using cognitive radios. …

An Optimized Proportionate Adaptive Algorithm For Sparse System Identification, Silviu Ciochina, Constantin Paleologu, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant Feb 2016

An Optimized Proportionate Adaptive Algorithm For Sparse System Identification, Silviu Ciochina, Constantin Paleologu, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Proportionate-type adaptive algorithms are commonly used for the identification of sparse impulse responses, like in network and acoustic echo cancellation. In this paper, we propose an optimized proportionate LMS adaptive filter in the context of a state variable model. The algorithm follows an optimization criterion based on the minimization of the system misalignment and uses an iterative procedure for computing the proportionate factors. Consequently, it achieves a proper compromise between the performance criteria, i.e., fast convergence/tracking and low mis adjustment. Simulations performed in the context of sparse system identification indicate the good behavior of the proposed algorithm.

Multiclass Object Detection With Single Query In Hyperspectral Imagery Using Class-Associative Spectral Fringe-Adjusted Joint Transform Correlation, Paheding Sidike, Vijayan K. Asari, Mohammad S. Alam

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a deterministic object detection algorithm capable of detecting multiclass objects in hyperspectral imagery (HSI) without any training or preprocessing. The proposed method, which is named class-associative spectral fringe-adjusted joint transform correlation (CSFJTC), is based on joint transform correlation (JTC) between object and nonobject spectral signatures to search for a similar match, which only requires one query (training-free) from the object's spectral signature. Our method utilizes class-associative filtering, modified Fourier plane image subtraction, and fringe-adjusted JTC techniques in spectral correlation domain to perform the object detection task.

The output of CSFJTC yields a pair of sharp correlation peaks for …

Histogram Of Oriented Phase And Gradient (Hopg) Descriptor For Improved Pedestrian Detection, Hussin Ragb, Vijayan K. Asari Feb 2016

Histogram Of Oriented Phase And Gradient (Hopg) Descriptor For Improved Pedestrian Detection, Hussin Ragb, Vijayan K. Asari

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new pedestrian detection descriptor named Histogram of Oriented Phase and Gradient (HOPG) based on a combination of the Histogram of Oriented Phase (HOP) features and the Histogram of Oriented Gradient features (HOG).

The proposed descriptor extracts the image information using both the gradient and phase congruency concepts. Although the HOG based method has been widely used in the human detection systems, it lacks to deal effectively with the images impacted by the illumination variations and cluttered background. By fusing HOP and HOG features, more structural information can be identified and localized in order to obtain more …

A Real-Time Information Based Demand-Side Management System In Smart Grid, Feng Ye, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu Feb 2016

A Real-Time Information Based Demand-Side Management System In Smart Grid, Feng Ye, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study a real-time information based demand-side management (DSM) system with advanced communication networks in smart grid. DSM can smooth peak-to-average ratio (PAR) of power usage in the grid, which in turn reduces the waste of fuel and the emission of greenhouse gas. We first target to minimize PAR with a centralized scheme. To motivate power suppliers, we further propose another centralized scheme targeting minimum power generation cost. However, customers may not be motivated by a centralized scheme since such a scheme requires total control and privacy from them. A centralized scheme also requires too much real-time …

Wireless Communication In Data Centers: A Survey, Abdelbaset S. Hamza, Jitender Deogun, Dennis R. Alexander

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Data centers (DCs) is becoming increasingly an integral part of the computing infrastructures of most enterprises. Therefore, the concept of DC networks (DCNs) is receiving an increased attention in the network research community. Most DCNs deployed today can be classified as wired DCNs as copper and optical fiber cables are used for intra- and inter-rack connections in the network. Despite recent advances, wired DCNs face two inevitable problems; cabling complexity and hotspots. To address these problems, recent research works suggest the incorporation of wireless communication technology into DCNs. Wireless links can be used to either augment conventional wired DCNs, or …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a new security protocol for a wireless sensor network, which is designed for monitoring long range power transmission lines in smart grid. Part of the monitoring network is composed of optical fiber composite over head ground wire (OPGW), thus it can be secured with conventional security protocol. However, the wireless sensor network between two neighboring OPGW gateways remains vulnerable. Our proposed security protocol focuses on the wireless sensor network part, it provides mutual authentication, data integrity, and data confidentiality for both uplink and downlink transmissions between the sensor nodes and the OPGW gateway. Besides, our …

Stability And Sensitivity Measures For Solutions In Complex, Intelligent, Adaptive And Autonomous Systems, Andreas Tolk Jan 2016

Stability And Sensitivity Measures For Solutions In Complex, Intelligent, Adaptive And Autonomous Systems, Andreas Tolk

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Simulation has become a pivotal tool for the design, analysis, and control of complex, intelligent, adaptive and autonomous systems and its components. However, due to the nature of these systems, traditional evaluation practices are often not sufficient. As the components follow adaptive rules, the cumulative events often exploit bifurcation enabling events, leading to clusters of solutions that do not follow the usual rules for standard distributed events. When using simulation for design, analysis, and control of such systems, the evaluation needs to be richer, applying bifurcation and cluster analysis to understand the distribution, applying factor analysis to understand the important …

Design, Analysis, Implementation And Evaluation Of Real-Time Opportunistic Spectrum Access In Cloud-Based Cognitive Radio Networks, Nimish Sharma

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Opportunistic spectrum access in cognitive radio network is proposed for remediation of spectrum under-utilization caused by exclusive licensing for service providers that are intermittently utilizing spectrum at any given geolocation and time. The unlicensed secondary users (SUs) rely on opportunistic spectrum access to maximize spectrum utilization by sensing/identifying the idle bands without causing harmful interference to licensed primary users (PUs). In this thesis, Real-time Opportunistic Spectrum Access in Cloud-based Cognitive Radio Networks (ROAR) architecture is presented where cloud computing is used for processing and storage of idle channels. Software-defined radios (SDRs) are used as SUs and PUs that identify, report, …

Performance Analysis Of Secondary Users In Heterogeneous Cognitive Radio Network, Tanjil Amin Jan 2016

Performance Analysis Of Secondary Users In Heterogeneous Cognitive Radio Network, Tanjil Amin

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Continuous increase in wireless subscriptions and static allocation of wireless frequency bands to the primary users (PUs) are fueling the radio frequency (RF) shortage problem. Cognitive radio network (CRN) is regarded as a solution to this problem as it utilizes the scarce RF in an opportunisticmanner to increase the spectrumefficiency. InCRN, secondary users (SUs) are allowed to access idle frequency bands opportunistically without causing harmful interference to the PUs. In CRN, the SUs determine the presence of PUs through spectrum sensing and access idle bands by means of dynamic spectrum access. Spectrum sensing techniques available in the literature do not …

Effects On Phased Arrays Radiation Pattern Due To Phase Error Distribution In The Phase Shifter Operation, Guiseppe Coviello, Gianfranco Avitabile, Giovanni Piccinni, Giulio D'Amato, Claudio Talarico

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Scholarship

A comprehensive study on the role of the phase errors distribution on the performances of the phased array systems has been produced. The analysis is brought out using a complete and behavioural model for radiation-pattern characteristics. The study has shown how the phase errors distribution actually affects the performances demonstrating that the rms phase error is a valuable figure of merit of phased array systems but it is not sufficient to completely describe the behaviour of a real system. The paper demonstrates that the antennas array beam shape is depending by the actual error phase distribution and that a good …

Motorcycle Helmet Crash Detection/Prevention System, David Witsaman Jan 2016

Motorcycle Helmet Crash Detection/Prevention System, David Witsaman

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project proposes a motorcycle safety system that increases safety by actively helping to prevent crashes while also helping in the case that an accident does occur. The system actively helps prevent accidents by keeping the user’s eyes on the road with three additions to the typical helmet. The helmet has a heads-up-display (HUD) containing the speed of the motorcycle and turn-by-turn directions. Instead of tilting their head down the user can see their speed and directions by moving their eyes which will keep the road in their field of view. Blind-spot detection increases the user’s overall awareness of their …

A Novel Low Latency, High Resolution And Low Cost Time Synchronization, Ali Aghdaei Jan 2016

A Novel Low Latency, High Resolution And Low Cost Time Synchronization, Ali Aghdaei

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This report presents a new low latency, high resolution and low cost timing synchro- nization technique for digital receivers. Traditional timing synchronization employs Matched filter to perform cross-correlation operation and estimate Time-of-Arrival (TOA) of the signal. Decreasing the latency of the traditional method through over- sampling leads to a higher complexity and it is not viable. Furthermore, to obtain a high-resolution TOA, an extensive bandwidth is required, which results in high system complexity. The proposed method uses single bit quantization to employ XNOR blocks instead of multiplier and accumulator (MAC) blocks in the traditional method. This substantially decreases complexity incorporating …

Comparing Various Hardware/Software Solutions And Conversion Methods For Controller Area Network (Can) Bus Data Collection, Samuel E. Marx, Joe D. Luck, Santosh Pitla, Roger M. Hoy

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Various hardware and software solutions exist for collecting Controller Area Network (CAN) bus data. Digital data accuracy could vary based upon different data logging methods (e.g., hardware/software timing, processor timing, etc.). CAN bus data were collected from agricultural tractors using multiple data acquisition solutions to quantify differences among collection methods and demonstrate potential data accumulation rates. Two types of data were observed for this study. The first, CAN bus frame data, represents data collected for each line of hex data sent from an ECU. One issue with frame data is the resulting large file sizes, therefore a second logging format …

Design, Analysis And Evaluation Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Ad Hoc Network For Emergency Response Communications, Robin D. Grodi Jan 2016

Design, Analysis And Evaluation Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Ad Hoc Network For Emergency Response Communications, Robin D. Grodi

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In any emergency situation, it is paramount that communication be established between those affected by an emergency and the emergency responders. This communication is typically initiated by contacting an emergency service number such as 9-1-1 which will then notify the appropriate responders. The communication link relies heavily on the use of the public telephone network. If an emergency situation causes damage to, or otherwise interrupts, the public telephone network then those affected by the emergency are unable to call for help or warn others. A backup emergency response communication system is required to restore communication in areas where the public …
