Energy Shaping Control For Stabilization Of Interconnected Voltage Source Converters In Weakly-Connected Ac Microgrid Systems, Nadia Lenora Carmita Smith

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the ubiquitous installations of renewable energy resources such as solar and wind, for decentralized power applications across the United States, microgrids are being viewed as an avenue for achieving this goal. Various independent system operators and regional transmission operators such as Southwest Power Pool (SPP), Midcontinent System Operator (MISO), PJM Interconnection and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) manage the transmission and generation systems that host the distributed energy resources (DERs). Voltage source converters typically interconnect the DERs to the utility system and used in High voltage dc (HVDC) systems for transmitting power throughout the United States. A microgrid …

Hardware Based Testing Of Communication Based Control For Dc Microgrid, Mahmoud Saleh, Yusef Esa, Ahmed Mohamed Nov 2017

Hardware Based Testing Of Communication Based Control For Dc Microgrid, Mahmoud Saleh, Yusef Esa, Ahmed Mohamed

Publications and Research

This paper further describes our work presented in Industry Application Society 2016 Conference, with more details related to the control and operation of the microgrid. The DC microgrid facility was custom designed and implemented at CCNY with minimal off-the-shelf components to enable flexibility and reconfiguration capability. The design steps, requirements, and experimental results of the developed testbed were discussed. As a case study, a central controller for energy management algorithm was developed and tested under several operational scenarios. The experimental results verify the applicability of the developed testbed for validating DC microgrid controllers.

Predictive Energy Management Of Islanded Microgrids With Photovoltaics And Energy Storage, Dennis G. Michaelson Jul 2017

Predictive Energy Management Of Islanded Microgrids With Photovoltaics And Energy Storage, Dennis G. Michaelson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Islanded microgrids powered primarily by photovoltaic (PV) arrays present a challenging control problem due to the intermittent production and the relatively close scale between the sources and the loads. Energy storage in such microgrids plays an important role in balancing supply with demand, and in extending operation during periods when the PV supply is not available or insufficient. The efficient operation of such microgrids requires effective management of all resources. A predictive energy management strategy can potentially avoid or effectively mitigate upcoming outages. This thesis presents an energy management system (EMS) for such microgrids. The EMS uses a predictive approach …

Management Of Islanded Operation Of Microgirds, Md Riyasat Azim May 2017

Management Of Islanded Operation Of Microgirds, Md Riyasat Azim

Doctoral Dissertations

Distributed generations with continuously growing penetration levels offer potential solutions to energy security and reliability with minimum environmental impacts. Distributed Generations when connected to the area electric power systems provide numerous advantages. However, grid integration of distributed generations presents several technical challenges which has forced the systems planners and operators to account for the repercussions on the distribution feeders which are no longer passive in the presence of distributed generations.

Grid integration of distributed generations requires accurate and reliable islanding detection methodology for secure system operation. Two distributed generation islanding detection methodologies are proposed in this dissertation. First, a passive …

Development Of Microgrid Test Bed For Testing Energy Management System, Shaili Nepal Jan 2017

Development Of Microgrid Test Bed For Testing Energy Management System, Shaili Nepal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today the world population has reached 7.5 billion, and this number is expected to grow at the rate of 1.13% every year [1]. With this increase in population, the total demand for electricity has also increased. More people means the need for more power: electricity to power homes, schools, industries, hospitals, and so on. In today’s world, where most of the daily activities are dependent on electricity, demand for electricity, therefore, continues to rise. Currently, managing this growing need for electricity is one of the challenges the world is facing. In addition to this, approximately 1.2 billion people live in …

Technical And Economic Potential Of Microgrids In California, Pramod Singh Jan 2017

Technical And Economic Potential Of Microgrids In California, Pramod Singh

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Microgrids are being investigated across the U.S. as a solution to support greater reliability, resiliency, and security of electricity supply. This thesis evaluates the potential of developing technically feasible and economically viable microgrids for selected customer categories in California.

Customer categories selected for this study are deemed suitable for microgrid applications by previous studies. For a customer to be technically suitable for microgrid adoption, this study defined a minimum energy requirement threshold. In order to determine the economically viable potential, a benefit-cost analysis was done to assess microgrid benefits compared to the base case of exclusive reliance on grid electricity. …
