Sensitivity Analysis Of An Automated Calibration Routine For Airborne Cameras, Philip E. Lorenzini Mar 2013

Sensitivity Analysis Of An Automated Calibration Routine For Airborne Cameras, Philip E. Lorenzini

Theses and Dissertations

Given a known aircraft location, a set of camera calibration parameters can be used to correlate features in an image with ground locations. Previously, these calibration parameters were obtained during preflight with a lengthy calibration process. A method to automate this calibration using images taken with an aircraft mounted camera and position and attitude data is developed. This thesis seeks to determine a partial set of circumstances that affect the accuracy of the calibration results through simulation and experimental flight test. A software simulator is developed in which to test an array of aircraft maneuvers, camera orientations, and noise injection. …

Laser Illuminated Imaging: Multiframe Beam Tilt Tracking And Deconvolution Algorithm, David J. Becker Mar 2013

Laser Illuminated Imaging: Multiframe Beam Tilt Tracking And Deconvolution Algorithm, David J. Becker

Theses and Dissertations

A laser-illuminated imaging system operating in the presence of atmospheric turbulence will encounter several sources of noise and diffraction induced errors. As the beam propagates, turbulence induced tilt will cause the beam to wander off axis from the target. This is especially troublesome when imaging satellites, since most turbulence is closer to the Earth's surface and greatly affects the beam in the early stages of propagation. Additionally, the returning beam convolved with the target will encounter turbulence induced tilt that appears as apparent movement of the target between image frames. This results in varying beam intensities at the target surface …

Real-Time Heading Estimation Using Perspective Features, James W. Dean Mar 2013

Real-Time Heading Estimation Using Perspective Features, James W. Dean

Theses and Dissertations

There are a large number of commercially available quad-rotor helicopters available from various manufacturers. All of these systems rely on a low cost MEMS based inertial measurement system for stabilization and navigation. These low cost inertial systems are all subject to rapid error growth in their attitude and position estimates unless bounded by external measurements. This thesis created real-time algorithm to integrate measurements from visual cues with measurements from onboard sensors to estimate the attitude position and velocity of a quad-rotor helicopter in a local navigation frame, a system model for the ARDrone, and a feed-back controller for the vehicle's …

Material Characterization Using Passive Multispectral Polarimetric Imagery, Melissa A . Sawyer Mar 2013

Material Characterization Using Passive Multispectral Polarimetric Imagery, Melissa A . Sawyer

Theses and Dissertations

A new method for characterization of unknown targets using passive multispectral polarimetric imagery is presented. Previous work makes use of a pBRDF derived equation for the degree of linear polarization and with the aid of measurements at multiple incident angles estimates refractive index and reflection angle. This work uses known incident and reflection angles along with dispersion equations and polarimetric data at multiple wavelengths to recover the index of refraction. Although imagery is collected with a division of time polarimeter and a spectral filter wheel in iterative, manual steps, the new algorithm could be applied to any set of registered …

A Survey Of Systems For Predicting Stock Market Movements, Combining Market Indicators And Machine Learning Classifiers, Jeffrey Allan Caley Mar 2013

A Survey Of Systems For Predicting Stock Market Movements, Combining Market Indicators And Machine Learning Classifiers, Jeffrey Allan Caley

Dissertations and Theses

In this work, we propose and investigate a series of methods to predict stock market movements. These methods use stock market technical and macroeconomic indicators as inputs into different machine learning classifiers. The objective is to survey existing domain knowledge, and combine multiple techniques into one method to predict daily market movements for stocks. Approaches using nearest neighbor classification, support vector machine classification, K-means classification, principal component analysis and genetic algorithms for feature reduction and redefining the classification rule were explored. Ten stocks, 9 companies and 1 index, were used to evaluate each iteration of the trading method. The classification …

Joint Angle Tracking With Inertial Sensors, Mahmoud Ahmed El-Gohary Feb 2013

Joint Angle Tracking With Inertial Sensors, Mahmoud Ahmed El-Gohary

Dissertations and Theses

The need to characterize normal and pathological human movement has consistently driven researchers to develop new tracking devices and to improve movement analysis systems. Movement has traditionally been captured by either optical, magnetic, mechanical, structured light, or acoustic systems. All of these systems have inherent limitations. Optical systems are costly, require fixed cameras in a controlled environment, and suffer from problems of occlusion. Similarly, acoustic and structured light systems suffer from the occlusion problem. Magnetic and radio frequency systems suffer from electromagnetic disturbances, noise and multipath problems. Mechanical systems have physical constraints that limit the natural body movement. Recently, the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Aluminum nanoparticles and explosive formulations that incorporate them have been a subject of ongoing interest due to the potential of aluminum particles to dramatically increase energy content relative to conventional organic explosives. We have used time-resolved atomic and molecular emission spectroscopy to monitor the combustion of aluminum nanoparticles within the overall chemical dynamicsof post-detonation fireballs. We have studied the energy release dynamics of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) charges incorporating three types of aluminum nanoparticles: commercial oxide-passivated nanoparticles, oleic acid-capped aluminum nanoparticles (AlOA), and nanoparticles in which the oxide shell of the particle has been functionalized with an acrylic monomer and copolymerized into …

A new capability of our well-known NEMO 3-D simulator (Ref. Klimeck et al., 2007 [10]) is introduced by carefully investigating the utility of III–V semiconductor quantum dots as infrared photodetectors at a wavelength of 1.2–1.5 μm. We not only present a detailed description of the simulation methodology coupled to the atomistic sp3d5s∗ tight-binding band model, but also validate the suggested methodology with a focus on a proof of principle on small GaAs quantum dots (QDs). Then, we move the simulation scope to optical properties of realistically sized dome-shaped InAs/GaAs QDs that are grown by self- assembly and typically contain a …

General Transformations For Gpu Execution Of Tree Traversals, Michael Goldfarb, Youngjoon Jo, Milind Kulkarni Jan 2013

General Transformations For Gpu Execution Of Tree Traversals, Michael Goldfarb, Youngjoon Jo, Milind Kulkarni

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

With the advent of programmer-friendly GPU computing environments, there has been much interest in offloading workloads that can exploit the high degree of parallelism available on modern GPUs. Exploiting this parallelism and optimizing for the GPU memory hierarchy is well-understood for regular applications that operate on dense data structures such as arrays and matrices. However, there has been significantly less work in the area of irregular algorithms and even less so when pointer-based dynamic data structures are involved. Recently, irregular algorithms such as Barnes-Hut and kd-tree traversals have been implemented on GPUs, yielding significant performance gains over CPU implementations. However, …
