A Low-Cost Motion Classification System For A Stuffed Animal Using An Imu And Machine Learning, Rachel N. Guynes
A Low-Cost Motion Classification System For A Stuffed Animal Using An Imu And Machine Learning, Rachel N. Guynes
Honors Theses
One of the many fields that has seen the integration of robots is therapy. Zoomorphic robots (ZR) are designed to look and behave like animals to assist in Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) practices. Studies show that ZRs can provide benefits similar to working with an actual animal; however, their high cost limits their accessibility. This thesis documents the process of building a real-time, low-cost motion classification system that can be attached to a stuffed animal to make it more interactive. Using a Random Forest (RF) classifier, the system identifies movements with approximately 81.67% accuracy.
Fusion-Based Utilization And Synthesis Of Efficient Detections, Ethan C. Rogers, Parker H. Liberatore, Thomas G. James
Fusion-Based Utilization And Synthesis Of Efficient Detections, Ethan C. Rogers, Parker H. Liberatore, Thomas G. James
Endeavors: Mississippi State Undergraduate Research Journal
This study aimed to develop hardware and software for an object detection fusion system, using three different sensors. The system was built and studied with the motivating application of autonomous drones searching for and detecting people in a search-and-rescue scenario. The system’s performance was compared to that of individual sensors deployed for the same task. The focus of the research was to prove the competence and benefits of a decision-level fusion method as it was applied to a lightweight object detection architecture, and the driving motivators behind the study were simplicity in implementation and good computational performance. In short, the …
Improved Methodology For Conducted Emi Assessment Of Power Electronics And Line Impedance Measurement, Mark Anthony Didat
Improved Methodology For Conducted Emi Assessment Of Power Electronics And Line Impedance Measurement, Mark Anthony Didat
Theses and Dissertations
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), primarily common mode (CM), is problematic in a wide range of electronic circuits due to its propensity to radiate, particularly in high power applications. It is routine for much effort and resources to be dedicated to its characterization and reduction as EMI compliance is a requirement for most electronic systems and devices, including power electronics. Many well-known factors contribute to a system’s EMI performance including intentional coupling from system components as well as unintentional coupling from parasitics. Sources of intentional coupling may include Y-capacitors intended to mitigate EMI as part of a filter. Unintentional coupling is more …
Network Layer Reliability And Security In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Jing Yang
Network Layer Reliability And Security In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Jing Yang
Theses and Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have become pivotal in precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, and smart healthcare applications. However, the challenges of energy consumption and security, particularly concerning the reliance on large battery-operated nodes, pose significant hurdles for these networks. Energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs) emerged as a solution, enabling nodes to replenish energy from the environment remotely. Yet, the transition to EH-WSNs brought forth new obstacles in ensuring reliable and secure data transmission.
In our initial study, we tackled the intermittent connectivity issue prevalent in EH-WSNs due to the dynamic behavior of energy harvesting nodes. Rapid shifts between ON and OFF …
Resource Optimization Of Edge Servers Dealing With Priority-Based Workloads By Utilizing Service Level Objective-Aware Virtual Rebalancing, Amna Shahid
Theses and Dissertations
IoT enables profitable communication between sensor/actuator devices and the cloud. Slow network causing Edge data to lack Cloud analytics hinders real-time analytics adoption. VRebalance solves priority-based workload performance for stream processing at the Edge. BO is used in VRebalance to prioritize workloads and find optimal resource configurations for efficient resource management. Apache Storm platform was used with RIoTBench IoT benchmark tool for real-time stream processing. Tools were used to evaluate VRebalance. Study shows VRebalance is more effective than traditional methods, meeting SLO targets despite system changes. VRebalance decreased SLO violation rates by almost 30% for static priority-based workloads and 52.2% …
Design Of High-Power Ultra-High-Speed Permanent Magnet Machine, Md Khurshedul Islam
Design Of High-Power Ultra-High-Speed Permanent Magnet Machine, Md Khurshedul Islam
Theses and Dissertations
The demand for ultra-high-speed machines (UHSM) is rapidly growing in high-tech industries due to their attractive features. A-mechanically-based-antenna (AMEBA) system is another emerging application of UHSM. It enables portable wireless communication in the radio frequency (RF)-denied environment, which was not possible until recently. The AMEBA system requires a high-power (HP) UHSM for its effective communication performance. However, at the expected rotational speed range of 0.5 to 1 million rpm, the power level of UHSM is limited, and no research effort has succeeded to improve the power level of UHSM.
The design of HP-UHSM is highly iterative, and …
Comparing Importance Of Knowledge And Professional Skill Areas For Engineering Programming Utilizing A Two Group Delphi Survey, John F. Hutton
Comparing Importance Of Knowledge And Professional Skill Areas For Engineering Programming Utilizing A Two Group Delphi Survey, John F. Hutton
Theses and Dissertations
All engineering careers require some level of programming proficiency. However, beginning programming classes are challenging for many students. Difficulties have been well-documented and contribute to high drop-out rates which prevent students from pursuing engineering. While many approaches have been tried to improve the performance of students and reduce the dropout rate, continued work is needed. This research seeks to re-examine what items are critical for programming education and how those might inform what is taught in introductory programming classes (CS1). Following trends coming from accreditation and academic boards on the importance of professional skills, we desire to rank knowledge and …
Development Of The Subwave Rov And Neural-Inertial Positioning System, Jason Farmer
Development Of The Subwave Rov And Neural-Inertial Positioning System, Jason Farmer
Theses and Dissertations
This report documents the development of the Subwave, a remotely-operated underwater vehicle (ROV), and an artificial neural network based inertial positioning system. The Subwave uses the open-source ArduSub software framework, commercial-off-the-shelf hardware components, and several custom systems. It is designed as a platform for researching autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The first step for an AUV is navigating waypoints, which requires the AUV to know its global position. Since global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) are denied underwater, the available underwater positioning systems were surveyed and determined that all the available systems were too large and expensive for the Subwave. It was …
Unmanned Ground Vehicle System To Collect Soil Moisture Data, Austin Edward Flynt
Unmanned Ground Vehicle System To Collect Soil Moisture Data, Austin Edward Flynt
Theses and Dissertations
With an increased interest in precision agriculture, it is important to identify efficient ways to monitor soil moisture. Soil moisture can be monitored using handheld sensors, but this method is laborious and time consuming. Remote methods, such as radar systems can be used as well, but these methods require ground truth data to verify their accuracy. It becomes clear that to collect this data regularly and reliably, a mobile robotic device is necessary. This thesis proposes to implement mobile robot take soil moisture measurements with less human effort than existing methods while maintaining the same accuracy. This soil moisture data …
