Detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are widely used in industrial processes and household products, is very important due to significant health hazards associated with them. VOCs are commonly detected using photo-ionization detectors (PIDs), suspended hot bead pellistors, or heated metal oxide semiconductor functionalization layers. This research addresses the numerical distortion of features due to the presence of clouds in an image. The research aims to quantify the probability of a mismatch between two features in a single image, which will describe the likelihood that a visual navigation system incorrectly tracks a feature throughout an image sequence, leading to position miscalculations. First, an algorithm is developed for calculating transparency of clouds in images at the pixel level. The results of falls can be disastrous, create a long road to recovery, and in many cases result in death. This research followed previous work and attempted to modify the spring in two ways. First, a Ti/Au meander resistor was deposited atop the membrane in an effort to actuate the membrane and change the spring constant. Secondly, a series of overhanging cantilevers were attached to the bulk substrate surrounding the membrane in an effort to constrain the membrane buckling deflection to the negative stiffness region. Membrane buckling was investigated through Finite Element analysis (FEA) and analytical equations. Accurate change detection (CD) results in urban environments is of interest to a diverse set of applications including military surveillance, environmental monitoring, and urban development. This work presents a hyperspectral CD (HSCD) framework. The framework uncovers the need for HSCD methods that resolve false change caused by image parallax. A Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) statistic for HSCD is developed that accommodates unknown mis-registration between imagery described by a prior probability density function for the spatial mis-registration. A new System Protection (SP) technology is explored by using electrical and mechanical interference-sensing devices that are implemented with granular memristive material. The granular materials consist of oxide-coated copper spheres with radii of about 700 µm that are placed in contact to produce thin oxide junctions which exhibit memristive behavior. Processes for etching, which compared acetic acid and nitric acid etches, and thermal oxidation at 100°C are performed and compared to produce copper spheres with a copper oxide layer over the sphere surface. A granular memristive device with the end goal of creating a novel system protection device is introduced in a 1-Dimension array. The electromechanical network will lay the groundwork for future 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional devices for simultaneous protection from intrusion. Off the shelf copper spheres with diameter of 710 ± 11microns were found through nano-indentation measurements to have elastic modulus of 106GPa, and compressive yield strength of 729MPa, these spheres were prepared for test in a 1-Dimensional array device. The Telops polarimetric-hyperspectral imager combines polarimetric and hyperspectral technologies to enable enhanced scene characterization. The Defense Threat Reduction Agency funded research at AFIT to leverage this capability to provide more accurate scene information to radiation transport models that will allow for more effective location of radiation sources within a region of interest. To support the objectives of the DTRA effort, there is a requirement for highly accurate radiometric, polarimetric, and spectral data on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This thesis explores the improvement of quantum efficiencies for InGaN/GaN heterostructures and their applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). Different growth approaches and structural designs were investigated to identify and address the major factors limiting the efficiency. (1) Hot electron overflow and asymmetrical electron/hole injection were found to be the dominant reasons for efficiency degradation in nitride LEDs at high injection; (2) delta p-doped InGaN quantum barriers were employed to improve hole concentration inside the active region and therefore improve hole injection without sacrificing the layer quality; (3) InGaN active regions based on InGaN multiple …

New power applications for managing increasingly higher power levels require that more heat be removed from the power transistor channel. Conventional treatments for heat dissipation do not take into account the conversion of excess electron energy into longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, whose associated heat is stored in the channel unless such LO phonons decay into longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons via a Ridley path. A two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) density of ~5×1012cm-2 in the channel results in a strong plasmon–LO phonon coupling (resonance) and a minimum LO phonon lifetime is experimentally observed, implying fast heat removal from …

Sensitive Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) cantilever designs were modeled, fabricated, and tested to measure the photoacoustic (PA) response of gasses to terahertz (THz) radiation. Surface and bulk micromachining technologies were employed to create the extremely sensitive devices that could detect very small changes in pressure. Fabricated devices were then tested in a custom made THz PA vacuum test chamber where the cantilever deflections caused by the photoacoustic effect were measured with a laser interferometer and iris beam clipped methods. These devices utilize a mechanical component that can wear down and fail over time. Metal insulator transition (MIT) materials, also known as phase change materials (PCMs), exhibit a reversible transition that can be used to replace the mechanical component in reconfigurable devices. This dissertation presents a method to use an electric motor to emulate the steady-state and transient shaft power characteristics of an aeroderivative twin-shaft turbine engine. Model-based control provides the framework for developing an aeroderivative twin-shaft engine emulation system. Criteria are developed to appropriately specify the motor and variable-speed drive, based on torque, power, and inertia. This method accounts for the difference in inertia between the engine and the emulating motor; it establishes for the first time the nominal and peak torque requirements of the machine and the peak power and current requirements of the electronic motor drive (inverter).
