A method for analyzing electrostatic discharge (ESD) generators and coupling to equipment under test in the frequency domain is proposed. In ESD generators, the pulses are excited by the voltage collapse across relay contacts. The voltage collapse is replaced by one port of a vector network analyer (VNA). All the discrete and structural elements that form the ESD current pulse and the transient fields are excited by the VNA as if they were excited by the voltage collapse. Simulation of light propagation within nematic liquid-crystal (LC) devices is considered, of which the director is aligned normal to the z axis. A three-dimensional full-vector finite-difference beam propagation method for an anisotropic medium is presented and an alternating direction implicit scheme is adopted. Simulations of light propagation in a bulk polarization converter, a waveguide with a LC covering layer, and an integrated polarization splitter and optical switch are presented. Ladar systems are an emerging technology with applications in many fields. Consequently, simulations for these systems have become a valuable tool in the improvement of existing systems and the development of new ones. This paper discusses the theory and issues involved in reliably modeling the return waveform of a ladar beam footprint in the Utah State University LadarSIM simulation software. Emphasis is placed on modeling system-level effects that allow an investigation of engineering tradeoffs in preliminary designs, and validation of behaviors in fabricated designs. In determining the correct operation of relays of a protection scheme, proper representation of instrument transformers and their behavior in conditions where there can be transient is very critical. This paper presents a simulation model for assessing the transient performance of capacitive voltage transformers (CVTs). In order to test the validity of the developed model, four CVT operational conditions are considered using field data collected from one of the Nigerian electric utility 330/132/33 kV substations. Multi-Agent coordination and control has been studied for a long time, but has recently gained more interest because of technology improvements allowing smaller, more versatile robots and other types of agents. To facilitate multi-agent experiments between heterogeneous agents, including robots and UAVs, we have created a test-bed with both simulation and hardware capabilities. This thesis discusses the creation of this unique, versatile test-bed for multi-agent experiments, also a unique graph creation algorithm, and some experimental results obtained using the test-bed.

The pulse regulation control scheme is presented and applied to the boost integrated flyback rectifier/energy storage dc/dc (BIFRED) converter as the most popular member of the integrated high-quality rectifier-regulators (IHQRR). Long-term hot-carrier induced degradation of MOS devices has become more severe as the device size continues to scale down to submicron range. In our work, a simple yet effective method has been developed to provide the degradation laws with a better predictability. The method can be easily augmented into any of the existing degradation laws without requiring additional algorithm. An array-based nanoarchitecture has been recently proposed based on nanowires such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silicon nanowires (SiNWs). Time-domain simulation algorithms are widely used in the anaylsis and design of electromagnetic systems. Many of them are characterized by high Q's. Thus, the simulations have to employ many time steps in order to achieve a complete characterization of these systems. This time-consuming computational effort can be avoided if the late instants of time are extrapolated by applying a parametric estimation algorithm. Nesting algorithms deal with placing two-dimensional shapes on the given canvas. In this paper a binary way of solving the nesting problem is proposed. Geometric shapes are quantized into binary form, which is used to operate on them. After finishing nesting they are converted back into original geometrical form. Investigations showed, that there is a big influence of quantization accuracy for the nesting effect. However, greater accuracy results with longer time of computation. The proposed knowledge base system is able to strongly reduce the computational time.

To create a realistic environment, many simulations require simulated agents with human behavior patterns. Manually creating such agents with realistic behavior is often a tedious and time-consuming task. This dissertation describes a new approach that automatically builds human behavior models for simulated agents by observing human performance. The research described in this dissertation synergistically combines Context-Based Reasoning, a paradigm especially developed to model tactical human performance within simulated agents, with Genetic Programming, a machine learning algorithm to construct the behavior knowledge in accordance to the paradigm. Prediction of the performance of comminution equipment by mathematical models and simulation poses a great challenge to the chemical engineer. This paper describes the simulation of grinding results obtained using an impact mill. Single particle results have been used to generate breakage and selection coefficients that were used for the evaluation of the model. Results have shown that simulation model is in good agreement with the experimental data obtained at a circumferential speed above 60 m/s. At lower speeds, the models shows only partial agreement in the middle particle size ranges. The application of the model is therefore limited for …

A finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method capable of attaching rectangular computational domains is proposed herein. The aim of this approach is to reduce the size of computational domain according to the geometry of the modeled structure so as to reduce the simulation time with keeping precision of the result in an acceptable range. A multigrid algorithm is applied on the attaching interface between two rectangular domains so that different resolution can be achieved in different domains.

In electromagnetic modeling, agreement between modeling and measurements is a common goal. There are questions that define every model. What is to be modeled? How is it going to be modeled? At what scale is it to be modeled? Through sample results and discussion, this paper addresses some general and some specific elements of model veracity. Through determination, numerical models can certainly be pushed to match any measured results. However, in the end the question that this paper addresses is not necessarily "How good can this model be?" as it is "Is this model good enough?".

An industrial food processing plant consisting of nonlinear dynamics requires pressure and temperature controllers to be nonlinear. In this paper, nonlinear controllers are designed using fuzzy logic to augment the conventional pressure and temperature PI controllers for an industrial food processing plant. Simulation results are presented to show improvement in the plant response with the hybrid controllers.

Multipath effects are a source of error degrading the accuracy of DGPS signal processing. The statistical models of multipath are determined by user location and, in addition are time varying. There is no unified statistical model for the multipath signal. Therefore the solution of the multipath problem using statistical models is difficult. A new real beam interferometric processing technique, called Adaptive Clutter Erasure (ACE), is investigated for applicability to ground clutter suppression in airborne radar systems. By analysis and simulation, the viability of the ACE concept as a next generation clutter suppression technique is demonstrated to achieve performance enhancements commensurate with currently implemented techniques. Research results indicate the ACE concept provides a reliably consistent 10dB Signal-to-Clutter Ratio (SCR) advantage over the APG-63, an operational radar system used for baseline comparison. This paper reports on the simulation studies carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the practical implementation of a continuously online trained (COT) artificial neural network (ANN) controller to identify the continuous changing complex nonlinear dynamics of the power system, and another COT ANN to control a micro-turbogenerator which consists of a turbine simulator and a micro-alternator connected to an infinite bus through a short transmission line in a laboratory environment. Existing missile/target encounter modeling and simulation systems focus on improving probability of kill models. Little research has been done to visualize these encounters. These systems can be made more useful to the engineers by incorporating current computer graphics technology for visualizing and animating the encounter. A fully asynchronous fixed point FFT processor is introduced for low power space applications. The architecture is based on an algorithm developed by Suter and Stevens specifically for a low power implementation. The novelty of this architecture lies in its high localization of components and pipelining with no need to share a global memory. High throughput is attained using large numbers of small, local components working in parallel. The characteristics of each algorithm are illustrated by simulating geometric space data clustering. Then each algorithm is applied to image data sets to compress the size by reducing the number of colors from 256 to 16.

The analysis of shielding enclosures is complicated by the existence of apertures and cables. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method can model shielding enclosures with complex geometries, but has difficulty modeling wires and cables of arbitrary radii. Modeling the wire by setting the axial component of the electric field to zero in the FDTD results in a wire with a radius determined by the mesh discretisation. Neglecting wire radius in applications such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) or printed circuit board modeling may result in gross errors because near field quantities are typically sensitive to wire thickness. Current-regulated brushless DC machines are used in a wide variety of applications including robotics, actuators, electric vehicles, and ship propulsion systems. When conducting system analysis of this or any other type of drive, average-value reduced-order models are invaluable since they provide a means of rapidly predicting the electromechanical dynamics and are readily linearized for control system synthesis. In this paper, a highly accurate average-value reduced-order model of a hysteresis current-regulated brushless DC drive is set forth.
