Pulsed diode laser optoacoustic diagnostics were carried out to characterize solid sample materials. The apparatus developed is compact, portable, cost-effective and therefore very promising for both industrial as well as laboratory applications. To our knowledge, this is the first time that optoacoustic characterization and measurement have been performed with a diode laser. The method was successfully applied to measure the thickness of a multilayer structure non-intrusively. Internal cracks of the material were detected by this technique.

We develop and present results of an artificial neural network (ANN) based compensation technique for mismatched classifier training and testing conditions in speaker identification (SID). One ANN per feature per speaker is trained to perform a mapping of that feature from a corrupted condition to an undistorted condition. Therefore, a classifier trained under one condition may be used to classify data collected under a different condition. Speech utterances from 168 speakers, collected in a studio, and also re-recorded after transmission over telephone networks, are used for developing and testing the method. This thesis examines the effects of atmospheric turbulence-induced phase perturbations on the performance of ground-based Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) systems. Both Fully Adaptive Joint Domain Optimum and Partially Adaptive Factored-Time Space processing methods are examined. This thesis concentrates on the turbulence effects on STAP applied to ground-based arrays. This thesis further focuses on the capability of STAP to resolve targets at low elevation angles in the presence of turbulence. Only clutter interference and receiver noise are considered. A channel compensation method is sought for use in speaker identification (ID) and verification applications under matched and mismatched training and testing conditions. This work expands on previous work on matched conditions by investigating three techniques on matched and mismatched conditions using the TIMIT and NTIMIT speech databases. First, previous results on 168 speakers are reproduced for matched conditions using Gaussian mixture models (GMM) and mel-frequency cepstral coefficients. Next, cepstral mean subtraction with band limiting (CMSBL) is investigated. The third method, developed in this thesis uses a modified Wiener filtering approach to channel compensation. The traditional approach to parallel processing has been to use Massively Parallel Processors (MPPs). An alternative design is commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) workstations connected to high-speed networks. These networks of workstations (NOWs) typically have faster processors, heterogeneous environments, and most importantly, offer a lower per node cost. This thesis compares the performance of MPPs and NOWs for the two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2-D FFT). Three original, high-performance, portable 2-D FFTs have been implemented: the vector-radix, row-column and pipeline. One of the primary problems with the application of Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) techniques is secondary data support for the interference plus noise covariance matrix estimate. Reed has shown the required secondary data support to achieve performance within 3 dB of optimal SINR is approximately equal to twice the degrees of freedom (DOF) used in the algorithm. Reed proved this rule for Sample Matrix Inversion (SMI) techniques. Near-field scatterers, such as the wing of an airplane, can affect the ability of the processor to null out clutter and jammer signals. The target, clutter, and jammer signals will reflect off the near-field scatterers into the array and appear to be coming from a direction different from their true sources. This thesis develops a theoretical model for the direct path and scattered path signals from the target, clutter, and jamming signals. This paper presents a modularized simulation software package for adaptive beamforming. In recent years, the theory and technology of adaptive beamforming have been applied extensively in many different areas such as radar, sonar, communication systems, and geophysical exploration. As many new beamforming architectures and related algorithms are being introduced, researchers find themselves repeating the laborious process of writing similar software routines in order to conduct simulations. This is largely due to the lack of well-defined and modularized supporting software. The major contribution of system identification is the development of analytical models of a system. Many identification techniques can adequately describe the input and output map. One of the challenges of these techniques is to correctly infer from the measured data the characteristics of the individual, contributing components producing a more accurate system model.
In this thesis linear, dynamic, multivariable state-space models for three joints of the Dexterous Orbital Servicing System (DOSS) are identified. We showed that the output of an autocorrelation with a gas spectrum could be triple-correlated to reduce the effects of Gaussian noise. Such processing is directly applicable to a correlation spectrometer but could be applied to other designs. In spite of the added processing, triple-correlating the output of a spectrometer allowed us to generally increase the SNR by over a factor of ten. Even with as few as two measurements good results were obtained.

This thesis presents an original work in the area of designing and implementing a simulation testbed for modelling a high speed spread spectrum Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Local Area Network (LAN). The spread spectrum technique used in this LAN model is Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA). With digital motion video for either transmission or storage, there always exists a trade-off between the data transmission rate and the picture quality. The lower the transmission bit-rate is made, the more the quality of the image tends to degrade. With usual transform coding schemes the degradation usually occurs when low bit-rates, that is less than about 64Kbps, are used. The resultant image tends to suffer visually from a ''blocking" effect. Operational transconductance amplifier (OTAs) techniques are widely used in high-speed continuous-time integrated analog signal processing (ASP) circuits because resistors, inductors, integrators, buffers, multipliers and filters can be built by OTAs and capacitors. This study investigated the use of Wavelet Neural Networks (WNN) for signal approximation. The particular wavelet function used in this analysis consisted of a summation of sigmoidal functions (a sigmoidal wavelet). The sigmoidal wavelet has the advantage of being easily implemented in hardware via specialized electronic devices like the Intel Electronically Trainable Analog Neural Network (ETANN) chip. The WNN representation allows the determination of the number of hidden-layer nodes required to achieve a desired level of approximation accuracy. Research and development is presented of real time signal processing methodologies for the detection of fetal heart tones within a noise-contaminated signal from a passive acoustic sensor. A linear predictor algorithm is utilized for detection of the heart tone event and additional processing derives heart rate. The linear predictor is adaptively "trained" in a least mean square error sense on generic fetal heart tones recorded from patients. This research effort pursued the design, fabrication, and test of a robotic tactile sensor. The VLSI integrated circuit (IC) portion of the sensor included a 7 x 7 array of metal electrodes which were individually connected to identical MOSFET amplifiers. A 25 micrometers thick patch (6 mm x 6 mm) of piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film was attached to the array with a non-conductive adhesive, thereby creating an array of taxels. The purpose of this study was to investigate the trade-off between the number of quantization levels and the resulting noise characteristics for three classes of commonly occurring input signals, namely, those signals possessing Gaussian, negative-exponential and random sinusoidal distributions. This study derived expressions for the mean-squared error, output spectrum and error spectrum by expanding the nonlinear quantization function into a summation of orthogonal polynomials matched to the corresponding input signal distribution. Once accomplished, orthogonality properties were applied to provide usable expressions. A set of three Fortran 77 programs were developed- each of which applied to one of the studied input …

They also offered satisfactory performance in many applications. However, they show poor performance in other cases, such as image processing.

The Modified Hermite Transform (MHT), a suboptimum block transform scheme, is implemented on a TMS320C25 signal processing system with the objective of reducing the redundancy in speech signals and transmit a quantized vector representation at bitrates as less as 0.5 bits per sample.
The generation of the Hermite polynomials with a binomial and several first order IIR filter structures is presented focusing on the fact that no muliplications are required which simplifies the MHT algorithm considerably.

Time series signal processing techniques (Fourier based) were applied to study the effects of biofeedback on the cardiovascular and neuromuscular system.
A medical instrumentattion system was developed to monitor ECG, EEG and EMG biopotential signals and temperature.
Data from two experiments were first analyzed. These data were from two normal male subjects who engaged in relaxation techniques (Transcendental Meditation & Imagery). If we assumed that for both subjects relaxation produced a decrease of the sympathetic activity then that resulted in a decrease of the heart rate (ECG) and an increase in skin temperature. An off-set-type, one point response uniformity corrector and the associated signal processing circuits was developed to be used for a 160 x 244-element IR-CCD camera with PtSi Schottky-barrier detectors. Image sensors with PtSi Schottky-barrier detectors exhibit two types of noise in the displayed video output, a temporal noise and a spatial fixed pattern noise. The performance of the image sensor, limited by the spatial noise which obscures low contrast detail and limits camera sensitivity, can be improved by a uniformity corrector. The objective of this thesis is to detect the Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) using lower numbers of averages than at present, by using an optimal smoothing method which is based on the Kalman Filter.
By using this method, the wave V latency of the BAER which is useful in testing for hearing loss can be detected with as low as 500 averages, while the traditional signal averaging method requires at least 2000 averages. Thus the time required for a hearing loss test can be reduced from one hour to approximately 20 minutes.

Presented is a method for designing and implementing lattice filters to be used in Quadrature Mirror Filter (QMF) Banks. Quadrature Mirror Filter Banks find use in applications where a signal must be spilt into subbands operated on then reconstructed in the output. Because of their structure, lattice filters do this very well and allow perfect reconstruction, even when the lattice coefficients must be quantized. Time series signal processing techniques (Fourier based) were applied to analyze the relationship between heart rate and respiration. This analysis takes advantage of the different timing charecteristics of the autonomic nervous system inputs to analyze their influence on the heart rate.
Data from three experiments were analyzed. The first set of data was from helicopter pilots of the US Army. They injected atropine into themselves on certain days. A new signal processor for laser velocimeter systems is proposed. The proposed processor incorporates automatic initialization, real time operation, and can efficiently process input signals comprised of as low as 150 photons, with mean oscillation frequency up to 100 MHZ, and input turbulence from 0 to 20%. A bank of digital bandpass filters is employed for the energy spectrum estimation of the input signal. A deterministic model is developed to describe the relationship between the filter output energies and the input signal parameters.
