Contrary to the claims made in the comments to our paper, the passivity-based controller developed for induction motors has already been tested on the same demanding trajectories used for the input–output linearization controller. The experimental results show that the passivitybased controller provides closer tracking of the same mechanical trajectory, when compared with the input–output linearization controller.

In-situ probing of the Earth's upper atmosphere has greatly contributed to the understanding of the ionosphere's variations and structures. The purpose of this research project has been to develop the digital component of a Swept Langmuir Probe that will be used on a sounding rocket to be launched through the equatorial ionosphere. The probe will make measurements of the plasma density and temperature in the ionosphere.
The digital component uses an FPGA to perform three main functions in parallel which are generating a sweeping voltage on the probe, sampling data channels, and communicating measured data to external devices. The FPGA …

Welcome to Science of Sound. This course is offered as a regular class Fall Semesters on the USU campus in Logan, Utah. It is also available over the internet Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, or as a yearlong independent-studies course. In each case, work is submitted using the internet. The only difference in the regular class held Fall semester is that students meet with the professor three times a week to discuss the material in the text. This dissertation researches the task and path management of an autonomous vehicle with Ackerman-type steering.
The task management problem was approached as a path training operation in which a human operator drives the desired path through an environment. A training trajectory is converted into a series of path segments that are driveable by the autonomous vehicle by first fitting a general path to the dataset. Next, transition segments are added to the general path to match the vehicle velocity and steering angle rate limit.

A passivity-based controller, which takes into account saturation of the magnetic material in the main flux path of the induction motor, is developed to provide close tracking of time-varying speed and flux trajectories in the high magnetic saturation regions. The proposed passivity based controller is experimentally verified. Also, a comparison between the controllers based on the saturated and nonsaturated magnetics is presented to demonstrate the benefit of the controller based on the saturated magnetics

A silicon disk etched so that it contains a multitude of microscopic and thin window panes (micropanes) can potentially transmit a larger average electron beam current density and absorb a smaller fraction of the beam energy than a common metal foil window. The enhanced performance is achieved by a combination of decreased power loss due to the extremely small window thickness (~1 μm), and increased conductive cooling due to the small diameter (~50 μm) of the micropanes and the large cross section of the honeycomb structure that supports the micropanes. Breast cancer is currently one of the major causes of death for women in the U.S. Mammography is currently the most effective method for detection of breast cancer and early detection has proven to be an efficient tool to reduce the number of deaths. Mammography is the most demanding of all clinical imaging applications as it requires high contrast, high signal to noise ratio and resolution with minimal x-radiation. According to studies [36], 10% to 30% of women having breast cancer and undergoing mammography, have negative mammograms, i.e. are misdiagnosed. Different approaches to evaluating the behavior of the impedance of an electrically short dipole antenna in the ionosphere as a function of the driving frequency are discussed. The induced EMF method in quasi-static approximation is chosen for evaluating the impedance and explained in great detail. The E-region of the ionosphere is considered and the cold collisional plasma model is used.
The influence of a density gradient in plasma on the impedance is explored, and the possible current distributions on the surface of the antenna are considered, including the current distribution for the antenna with a gap. The conclusions are drawn …

The electron density of the ionosphere can be measured using rocket-borne probes that measure changes of the impedance of an antenna as it traverses the plasma. The resistive component of the antenna impedance is difficult to measure accurately in the D region of the ionosphere (50-90 km) because it has such a small value and is in series with a much larger capacitive reactance. The resistance term is squared during data analysis and this further adds to the inaccuracy. Previous data analysis has usually ignored the resistive term and led to errors of as much as 35% for the altitude …

The secant law is the relationship between the frequencies of a vertically incident wave and an obliquely incident wave that are reflected from the same level (i.e., density) of a stratified ionosphere. This thesis investigates the validity of the secant law applied to sporadic E.
Sporadic E data from two backscatter sounders and one vertical incidence ionosonde located in Japan were studied to test the validity of the secant law. The B-scan photos of the backscatter sounders were searched for Es patches which were then compared with the sporadic E parameters defined for vertical incidence ionograms.
