Vision-Based 3d Human Motion Analysis For Fall Detection And Bed-Exiting, Xiaoxiao Dai
Vision-Based 3d Human Motion Analysis For Fall Detection And Bed-Exiting, Xiaoxiao Dai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fall is one of the most dangerous and costly accidents that threaten health of elderly people, and a large portion of falls occurs when a patient is trying to exit a bed. This thesis proposes two vision-based approaches for general fall detection and bed-exiting detection for elderly people, respectively. The Kinect sensor is chosen as the major monitoring device.
The first approach exploits the Kinect sensor with its Windows SDK to detect fall activities. The recorded spatial coordinates of the human body joints from Kinect's 3D skeletal view are processed to extract posture features. Then the principle component analysis and …

Study The Carrier Frequency Offset (Cfo) For Wireless Ofdm, Saeed Mohseni
Study The Carrier Frequency Offset (Cfo) For Wireless Ofdm, Saeed Mohseni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Due to high proficiency with high bandwidth efficiency, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been selected for broadband wireless communication systems. Since OFDM can provide large data rates with sufficient robustness to radio channel impairments, and due to its robustness against the multipath delay spread, OFDM has always been a designated technique for broadband wireless communication mobile systems. Nevertheless, OFDM suffers from Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO). CFO has been recognized as a major disadvantage of OFDM. CFO can lead to the frequency mismatch in transmitter and receiver oscillator. Lack of the synchronization of the local oscillator signal (L.OSC), for down …

Electricity Markets, Smart Grids And Smart Buildings, Jonathan Falcey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A smart grid is an electricity network that accommodates two-way power flows, and utilizes two-way communications and increased measurement, in order to provide more information to customers and aid in the development of a more efficient electricity market. The current electrical network is outdated and has many shortcomings relating to power flows, inefficient electricity markets, generation/supply balance, a lack of information for the consumer and insufficient consumer interaction with electricity markets. Many of these challenges can be addressed with a smart grid, but there remain significant barriers to the implementation of a smart grid.
This paper proposes a novel method …
Control Of Harmonics In 6-Pulse Rectifiers, Sudeep K. Pyakuryal
Control Of Harmonics In 6-Pulse Rectifiers, Sudeep K. Pyakuryal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Harmonics are always present in electrical power systems. Harmonic distortion is harmless as long as its level is within the limit. However, with the recent rapid advancement of power electronics, i.e. non linear loads, the use of the variable speed drives are increasing day by day. Harmonics produced by non-linear loads are a potential risk if they are not evaluated, predicted, and controlled.
The power electronic switching devices like thyristor used in the rectifier circuits inject harmonic distortion to the utility grid in different applications. The harmonic distortion causes different problems in the power system. To minimize the unwanted effects …

Peak-To-Average-Power-Ratio (Papr) Reduction Techniques For Orthogonal-Frequency-Division- Multiplexing (Ofdm) Transmission, Bader Hamad Alhassoun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wireless communication has experienced an incredible growth in the last decade. Two decades ago,the number of mobile subscribers was less than 1% of the world's population. As of 2011, the number of mobile subscribers has increased tremendously to 79.86% of the world's population.
Robust and high-rate data transmission in mobile environments faces severe problems due to the time-variant channel conditions, multipath fading and shadow fading. Fading is the main limitation on wireless communication channels. Frequency selective interference and fading, such as multipath fading, is a bandwidth bottleneck in the "last mile" which runs from the access point to the user. …

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle In Smart Grid, Yin Yao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, in order to investigate the impact of charging load from plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), a stochastic model is developed in Matlab. In this model, two main types of PHEVs are defined: public transportation vehicles and private vehicles. Different charging time schedule, charging speed and battery capacity are considered for each type of vehicles. The simulation results reveal that there will be two load peaks (at noon and in evening) when the penetration level of PHEVs increases continuously to 30% in 2030. Therefore, optimization tool is utilized to shift load peaks. This optimization process is based on …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The spectacular growth of wireless communication tools has escalated the number of mobile subscribers from almost 700 million in 2000 to more than 4 billion in 2009. The huge number of subscribers has led to several issues with how service is provided. The high user demand has forced developers to overcome the problems of the old analog systems and to introduce OFDM as a promising technique that can fulfill users' high demands. This technique matches well with high data rate connection and provides a higher capacity for the subscribers' usage.
The OFDM, as a multi-carrier, is more complex than the …

Through the combination of these sensory techniques, we have successfully trained a control system capable of mapping brain activity onto muscle actuation. The design of a control algorithm capable of automatic …

Analysis And Design Of A Feedback Controlled Adaptive Pneumatic Cast, Susan Renee Mueller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A pneumatic system with PID control for an actively controlled cast is designed. The cast is intended to aid healing of diabetic foot ulcers by relieving pressure from the sole of a patient's foot and distributing it to the calf. This is accomplished by a pneumatic system which maintains set pressure in multiple air bladders. The research began by defining an electrical circuit analogous to a single supply subsystem. Tests are performed to determine the coefficients for each component. These coefficients are used in a mathematical model to better understand the response of the system to pressure input. A controller …
Sift-Me: A New Feature For Human Activity Recognition, Guosheng Wu
Sift-Me: A New Feature For Human Activity Recognition, Guosheng Wu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Action representation for robust human activity recognition is still a challenging problem. This thesis proposed a new feature for human activity recognition named SIFT-Motion Estimation (SIFT-ME). SIFT-ME is derived from SIFT correspondences in a sequence of video frames and adds tracking information to describe human body motion. This feature is an extension of SIFT and is used to represent both translation and rotation in plane rotation for the key features. Compare with other features, SIFT-ME is new as it uses rotation of key features to describe action and it robust to the environment changes. Because SIFT-ME is derived from SIFT …

Parametric Model Of Head Related Transfer Functions Based On Systematic Movements Of Poles And Zeros With Sound Location For Pole/Zero Models, Bahaa W. Al-Sheikh Hussein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Directional transfer functions (DTFs), the directional components of the Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs), are generally measured at finite locations in azimuth and elevation. Thus models are needed to synthesize DTFs at finer spatial resolution than the measured data to create complete virtual auditory displays. In this research, minimum-phase all-pole and all-zero models were used for modeling both human and cat DTFs. Real cepstrum analysis has been used to represent minimum phase HRTFs in the time domain. For the human DTFs, model orders were chosen to achieve specific objective error criteria published in previous studies that were based on subjective …
