A transfemoral prosthesis is required to assist amputees to perform activities of daily living (ADL). The purely mechanical or passive prosthesis has some drawbacks such as consumption of high metabolic energy and limitations in mimicking normal dynamics and kinematics of gait pattern. In contrast, the active prosthesis offers better performance and consumes less metabolic energy. However, recent active prosthesis uses surface electromyography as its sensory system which requires massive preparation work, causes sores to the patient by its electrodes and requires a lot of computation to extract meaningful features. Orthoptera is a taxonomic order of insects that includes grasshoppers, crickets, locusts, and others. Classification of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is an essential process for SAR image analysis and interpretation. Recent advances in imaging technologies have allowed data sizes to grow, and a large number of applications in many areas have been generated. The identification of DNA sequences as exon and intron is a common problem in genome analysis. The methods used for feature extraction and mapping techniques for the digitization of sequences affect directly the solution of this problem. The existing mapping techniques are not enough to detect coding and noncoding regions in some genomes because the digital representation of each base in a DNA sequence with an integer does not fully reflect the structure of an original DNA sequence. Classifiers overfit when the data dimensionality ratio to the number of samples is high in a dataset. This problem makes a classification model unreliable. When the overfitting problem occurs, one can achieve high accuracy in the training; however, test accuracy occurs significantly less than training accuracy. The random subspace method is a practical approach to overcome the overfitting problem. In random subspace methods, the classification algorithm selects a random subset of the features and trains a classifier function trained with the selected features. In supervised classification, obtaining nonlinear separating functions from an algorithm is crucial for prediction accuracy. This paper analyzes the polyhedral conic functions (PCF) algorithm that generates nonlinear separating functions by only solving simple subproblems. Then, a revised version of the algorithm is developed that achieves better generalization and fast training while maintaining the simplicity and high prediction accuracy of the original PCF algorithm. This is accomplished by making the following modifications to the subproblem: extension of the objective function with a regularization term, relaxation of a hard constraint set and introduction of a new error term. Diffuse low-grade gliomas (LGG) have been reclassified based on molecular mutations, which require invasive tumor tissue sampling. Tissue sampling by biopsy may be limited by sampling error, whereas non-invasive imaging can evaluate the entirety of a tumor. This study presents a non-invasive analysis of low-grade gliomas using imaging features based on the updated classification. We introduce molecular (MGMT methylation, IDH mutation, 1p/19q co-deletion, ATRX mutation, and TERT mutations) prediction methods of low-grade gliomas with imaging. In this paper, we present novel approaches to predicting as- set failure in the electric distribution system. Failures in overhead power lines and their associated equipment in particular, pose significant finan- cial and environmental threats to electric utilities. Electric device failure furthermore poses a burden on customers and can pose serious risk to life and livelihood. Working with asset data acquired from an electric utility in Southern California, and incorporating environmental and geospatial data from around the region, we applied a Random Forest methodology to predict which overhead distribution lines are most vulnerable to fail- ure. This paper applies machine learning feature selection techniques to the REGARDS stroke-related dataset to identify health-related biomarkers. A data-driven methodological framework is presented to evaluate multiple feature selection methods. In applying the framework, three classifiers are chosen in conjunction with two wrappers, and their performance with diverse classification targets such as Current Smoker, Current Alcohol Use, and Deceased is evaluated. The performance across logistic regression, random forest and naïve Bayes classifier methods, as quantified by the ROC Area Under Curve metric and selected features, was similar. Given the high incidence of dizziness and its frequent misdiagnosis, we aim to create a clinical support system to classify the presence or absence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo with high accuracy and specificity. This paper describes a three-phase study currently underway for classification of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which includes diagnosis by a specialist in a clinical setting. In this study, we propose a new approach that can be used as a kernel-like function for support vector machines (SVMs) in order to get nonlinear classification surfaces. We combined polyhedral conic functions (PCFs) with the SVM method. To get nonlinear classification surfaces, kernel functions are used with SVMs. However, the parameter selection of the kernel function affects the classification accuracy. Accent is used in speaker recognition system especially in forensic cases and plays a vital role in discriminating people of different groups, communities and origins due to their different speaking styles. The proposed method is based on Gaussian mixture model-universal background model (GMM-UBM), mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), and a data augmentation (DA) process. In complex dataset problems, traditional ML methods such as radial basis function neural network (RBFN), sparse coding (SC) using dictionary learning, and particle swarm optimization (PSO) provide trivial results, large structure, slow training, and/or slow testing. In this study, we propose several semantic kernels for word sense disambiguation (WSD). Our approaches adapt the intuition that class-based term values help in resolving ambiguity of polysemous words in WSD. We evaluate our proposed approaches with experiments, utilizing various sizes of training sets of disambiguated corpora (SensEval). With these experiments we try to answer the following questions: 1.) Do our semantic kernel formulations yield higher classification performance than traditional linear kernel?, 2.) Computer-aided classification of respiratory small airways dysfunction is not an easy task. There is a need to develop more robust classifiers, specifically for children as the classification studies performed to date have the following limitations: 1) they include features derived from tests that are not suitable for children and 2) they cannot distinguish between mild and severe small airway dysfunction.

The present thesis explores some approaches to classify time series without prior statistical information using the concept of permutation entropy. Motivated by the results from a previous published and relevant work that set similarity relationships between EEG time series, a reproduction of the proposed approach was performed giving negative results. The failure to reproduce those results led to the conclusion that the approach of building statistics from permutation patterns have to be complemented with another metric in order to be used for classification purposes. This research is an attempt to enhance the performance of a speech recognition system by combining the visual features (lip movement) with audio features. The results were calculated using utterances of numerals collected from participants inclusive of both male and female genders. This paper describes research in the field of the improved methodology of the classification of vowels /a, a:/, /$\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon$:/, /ı, i:/, /o, o:/, and /u, u:/ (vowel symbols according to IPA, i.e. International Phonetic Alphabet).
