Effective Magnetic And Electric Response Of Composite Materials, Mona Hassan Alsaleh
Doctoral Dissertations
Metamaterials (MMs) are nanocomposite materials consisting of metal-dielectric resonators much smaller in size than the wavelength of the incident light. Common examples of metamaterials are based on split ring resonators (SRRs), parallel wires or strips and fishnet structures. These types of materials are designed and fabricated in order to provide unique optical responses to the incident electromagnetic radiation that are not available in naturally existing materials. The MMs can exhibit unusual properties such as strong magnetism at terahertz (THz) and optical frequencies. Additionally, negative index materials (NIMs) can provide negative index of refraction which can be used in many applications …

High Performance Distributed On-Chip Voltage Regulation For Modern Integrated Systems, Longfei Wang
High Performance Distributed On-Chip Voltage Regulation For Modern Integrated Systems, Longfei Wang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Distributed on-chip voltage regulation where multiple voltage regulators are distributed among different locations of the chip demonstrates advantages as compared to on-chip voltage regulation utilizing a single voltage regulator. Better on-chip voltage noise performance and faster transient response can be realized due to localized voltage regulation. Despite the advantages of distributed on-chip voltage regulation, unbalanced current sharing issue can occur among each voltage regulator, which has been demonstrated to deteriorate power conversion efficiency, stability, and reliability of the power delivery network. An effective balanced current sharing scheme that can be applied to most voltage regulator types is proposed to balance …

Publications and Research
Optical non-linear phenomena are typically observed in natural materials interacting with light at high intensities, and they benefit a diverse range of applications from communication to sensing. However, controlling harmonic conversion with high efficiency and flexibility remains a major issue in modern optical and radio-frequency systems. Here, we introduce a dynamic time-domain digital-coding metasurface that enables efficient manipulation of spectral harmonic distribution. By dynamically modulating the local phase of the surface reflectivity, we achieve accurate control of different harmonics in a highly programmable and dynamic fashion, enabling unusual responses, such as velocity illusion. As a relevant application, we propose and …

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Type-II strained layer superlattice (T2SL) semiconductors hold great promise for mid- and long-wavelength infrared photodetectors. While T2SL-based materials have advanced significantly in the last three decades, an outstanding challenge to improve the T2SLs is to understand the carrier transport and its limitations, in particular along the superlattice growth layers.
In this dissertation, an overview of the current state-of-the-art InAs/GaSb T2SLs is presented. Fundamental semiconductor device equations and transport properties, including miniband conduction and the drift-diffusion parameters, are reviewed, and the fundamental limiting factors in carrier's transport are discussed. Furthermore, the standard method of electron-beam-induced current technique to measuring these parameters …

Scalable Stochastic Reachability: Theory, Computation, And Control, Abraham Puthuvana Vinod
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Guaranteeing safety and performance are crucial components in any control system, and particularly relevant in light of growing interest in reliable autonomy. In safety-critical applications like biomedical devices, spacecraft applications, and self-driving cars, the cost of failure can be severe. Verification provides these guarantees by characterizing the ``good'' initial states or configurations from which a state can be driven to remain within a collection of pre-specified safe sets, while respecting the system dynamics, bounds on control authority, and additive uncertainties. We also wish to design controllers to achieve this objective. This dissertation proposes novel theory and scalable algorithms for tractable …

Posters-at-the-Capitol
Piezoelectric materials have the unique ability to convert electrical energy to mechanical vibrations and vice versa. This project takes a stab to develop a reliable computational tool to simulate the vibration control of a novel “partial differential equation” model for a piezoelectric device, which is designed by integrating electric conducting piezoelectric layers constraining a viscoelastic layer to provide an active and lightweight intelligent structure. Controlling unwanted vibrations on piezoelectric devices (or harvesting energy from ambient vibrations) through piezoelectric layers has been the major focus in cutting-edge engineering applications such as ultrasonic welders and inchworms. The corresponding mathematical models for piezoelectric …

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Researchers have spent over 50 years improving the performance of HgCdTe infrared (IR) detectors and it is currently the dominant technology in the field; however, further improvement may be limited due to devices reaching the intrinsic limits of their constituent materials. To further improve the state-of-the-art in space-based IR detection, alternative material systems are being considered. The focus of this work is testing the space-environment viability of innovative device structures, namely unipolar barriers with Type-II superlattice (T2SL) absorbers, made from the 6.1 Å family of III-V elements which are theoretically superior performers while being less costly.

X-Search: An Open Access Interface For Cross-Cohort Exploration Of The National Sleep Research Resource, Licong Cui, Ningzhou Zeng, Matthew Kim, Remo Mueller, Emily Ruth Hankosky, Susan Redline, Guo-Qiang Zhang
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Background: The National Sleep Research Resource (NSRR) is a large-scale, openly shared, data repository of de-identified, highly curated clinical sleep data from multiple NIH-funded epidemiological studies. Although many data repositories allow users to browse their content, few support fine-grained, cross-cohort query and exploration at study-subject level. We introduce a cross-cohort query and exploration system, called X-search, to enable researchers to query patient cohort counts across a growing number of completed, NIH-funded studies in NSRR and explore the feasibility or likelihood of reusing the data for research studies.
Methods: X-search has been designed as a general framework with two loosely-coupled components: …

A New Efficient Domain Decomposition Method For Highly Irregular Via Patterns, Ping Li, Lijun Jiang, Xiaoyan Xiong, Hakan Bagci
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the high-speed signal path on PCB and packagings, vias usually causes most discontinuities and thereby crosstalks. In simulation and characterizations, they also generate more errors than the trace parts due to rich modes around them. To achieve both efficiency and accuracy, in this paper, a new domain decomposition based finite element time domain (FETD) method is proposed for the analysis of power/ground plate pairs with various types of antipads. Using the magnetic field feature, the 3D computational domain is firstly represented by a quasi-2D field. Then by taking advantage of the fast decaying property of high order modes, the …

Cloudsat: Iot Approach To Small Satellite Ground Infrastructure, Brian Zufelt
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Over the last decade, the cost of space access has dramatically decreased with the creation of the CubeSat standard. The CubeSat standard defines the structural requirements for an on-orbit deployer and satellite to be placed into orbit. The average cost of creating a space mission with the CubeSat standard can range from $200 thousand to over $3 million. This lower cost has allowed many Universities, and small businesses to create their own space programs. However, a significant portion of the investment for any new space asset is the development of the ground system to communicate with the satellite. These costs …

Multilayer Dielectric Rod Waveguide And Dielectric Rod Antenna With Enhanced Performance, Denise C. Lugo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents first a comprehensive study of the design and performance of a multilayer dielectric rod waveguide (DRW) with rectangular cross-section. The design is comprised of a high permittivity core encased by a low permittivity cladding. A modal analysis of the multilayer DRW with a 2:1 core aspect ratio is presented and a mathematical model is proposed to characterize the fundamental mode cutoff frequency in terms of the core and cladding permittivity and the core dimensions. The explicit nature of the model is useful for design and it offers an excellent match to the full-wave EM simulation data. The …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Brain Machine Interfaces (BMI) provide a communication pathway between the electrical conducting units of the brain (neurons) and external devices. BMI technology may provide improved neurological and physiological functions to patients suffering from disabilities due to damaged nervous systems. Unfortunately, microelectrodes used in Intracortical Neural Interfaces (INI), a subset of the BMI device family, have yet to demonstrate long-term in vivo performance due to material, mechanical and electrical failures. Many state-of-the-art INI devices are constructed using stacks of multiple materials, such as silicon (Si), titanium (Ti), platinum (Pt), parylene C, and polyimide. Not only must each material tolerate the biological …

Cfd Modeling On Hydrodynamic Characteristics Of Multiphase Counter-Current Flow In A Structured Packed Bed For Post-Combustion Co2 Capture, Li Yang, Fang Liu, Kozo Saito, Kunlei Liu
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Solvent-based post combustion CO2 capture is a promising technology for industrial application. Gas-liquid interfaces and interactions in the packed bed are considered one of the key factors affecting the overall CO2 absorption rate. Understanding the hydrodynamic characterizations within packed beds is essential to identify the appropriate enhanced mass transfer technique. However, multiphase counter-current flows in the structured packing typically used in these processes are complicated to visualize and optimize experimentally. In this paper, we aim to develop a comprehensive 3D multiphase, counter-current flow model to study the liquid/gas behavior on the surface of structured packing. The output from …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
This work studies online learning-based trajectory planning for multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to estimate a water parameter field of interest in the under-ice environment. A centralized system is considered, where several fixed access points on the ice layer are introduced as gateways for communications between the AUVs and a remote data fusion center. We model the water parameter field of interest as a Gaussian process with unknown hyper-parameters. The AUV trajectories for sampling are determined on an epoch-by-epoch basis. At the end of each epoch, the access points relay the observed field samples from all the AUVs to the …

In this paper, the combined problem of power company selection and demand response management (DRM) in a smart grid network consisting of multiple power companies and multiple customers is studied via adopting a reinforcement learning and game-theoretic technique. Each power company is characterized by its reputation and competitiveness. The customers, acting as learning automata select the most appropriate power company to be served, in terms of price and electricity needs’ fulfillment, via a reinforcement learning based mechanism. Given customers’ power company selection, the DRM problem is formulated as a two-stage game theoretic optimization framework. At the first stage the optimal …
Genetic Algorithm Design Of Photonic Crystals For Energy-Efficient Ultrafast Laser Transmitters, Troy A. Hutchins-Delgado
Genetic Algorithm Design Of Photonic Crystals For Energy-Efficient Ultrafast Laser Transmitters, Troy A. Hutchins-Delgado
Shared Knowledge Conference
Photonic crystals allow light to be controlled and manipulated such that novel photonic devices can be created. We are interested in using photonic crystals to increase the energy efficiency of our semiconductor whistle-geometry ring lasers. A photonic crystal will enable us to reduce the ring size, while maintaining confinement, thereby reducing its operating power. Photonic crystals can also exhibit slow light that will increase the interaction with the material. This will increase the gain, and therefore, lower the threshold for lasing to occur. Designing a photonic crystal for a particular application can be a challenge due to its number of …

Improved data processing techniques can mine this data more effectively and be used to improve situational awareness at all times thereby improving real-time decision making and minimizing errors in judgment induced by environmental conditions and anxiety levels. This objective of this research employs state of the art Machine Learning (ML) techniques to create an …
Resilient Adaptive Optimal Control Of Distributed Multi-Agent Systems Using Reinforcement Learning, Rohollah Moghadam, Hamidreza Modares
Resilient Adaptive Optimal Control Of Distributed Multi-Agent Systems Using Reinforcement Learning, Rohollah Moghadam, Hamidreza Modares
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study presents a unified resilient model-free reinforcement learning (RL) based distributed control protocol for leader-follower multi-agent systems. Although RL has been successfully used to learn optimal control protocols for multi-agent systems, the effects of adversarial inputs are ignored. It is shown in this study, however, that their adverse effects can propagate across the network and impact the learning outcome of other intact agents. To alleviate this problem, a unified RL-based distributed control frameworks is developed for both homogeneous and heterogeneous multi-agent systems to prevent corrupted sensory data from propagating across the network. To this end, only the leader communicates …

Dual-Display Laparoscopic Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging For Real-Time Surgical Assistance, Jaepyeong Cha, Corey Zheng, Lung Wai Lau
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) utilizes the speckle pattern of a laser to determine the blood flow in tissues. The current approaches for its use in a clinical setting require a camera system with a laser source on a separate optical axis making it unsuitable for minimally invasive surgery (MIS). With blood flow visualization, bowel viability, for example, can be determined. Thus, LSCI can be a valuable tool in gastrointestinal surgery. In this work, we develop the first-of-its-kind dual-display laparoscopic vision system integrating LSCI with a commercially available 10mm rigid laparoscope where the laser has the same optical axis as …

Conductivity, carrier concentration and carrier mobility in graphene were investigated as a function of time in response to ionized donor and acceptor adsorbates. While a reduction in conductivity and hole density in graphene was observed upon exposure to a weak electron donor NH3, the carrier mobility was found to increase monotonically. The opposite behavior is observed upon exposure to NO2, which is expected based on its typical electron withdrawing property. Upon exposure to C9H22N2, a strong donor, it resulted in the transformation of graphene from p-type to n-type, although …

Trident: Comprehensive Choke Error Mitigation In Ntc Systems, Aatreyi Bal, Sanghamitra Roy, Koushik Chakraborty
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Near threshold computing (NTC) systems have been inherently plagued with heightened process variation (PV) sensitivity. Choke points are an intriguing manifestation of this PV sensitivity. In this paper, we explore the probability of minimum timing violations, caused by choke points, in an NTC system, and their nontrivial impacts on the system reliability. We show that conventional timing error mitigation techniques are inefficient in tackling choke point-induced minimum timing violations. Consequently, we propose a comprehensive error mitigation technique, Trident, to tackle choke points at NTC. Trident offers a 1.37 × performance improvement and a 1.11 × energy-efficiency gain over Razor at …

Mrsh-Mem: Approximate Matching On Raw Memory Dumps, Lorenz Liebler, Frank Breitinger
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
This paper presents the fusion of two subdomains of digital forensics: (1) raw memory analysis and (2) approximate matching. Specifically, this paper describes a prototype implementation named MRSH-MEM that allows to compare hard drive images as well as memory dumps and therefore can answer the question if a particular program (installed on a hard drive) is currently running / loaded in memory. To answer this question, we only require both dumps or access to a public repository which provides the binaries to be tested. For our prototype, we modified an existing approximate matching algorithm named MRSH-NET and combined it with …
