In this dissertation we studied two topics which are focused on target detection through foliage and capacity analysis of cognitive radio. We propose a multi-step information theory based scheme for target detection through foliage, using ultra wide-band (UWB) radar sensor network (RSN). This method is motivated by the fact that echoes from the stationary target, obscured by foliage, are more random than the region without the target. This research work was aimed at finding novel approaches for early cancer detection. In cancer diagnosis, the candidate molecules largely include free DNA, related proteins and tumor cells, listed in increasing order of size. The list is also commonly accepted as early precursor of the disease where DNA and proteins are available in patients' blood earlier and the cell starts to appear in relatively later stage. Even though Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) in its original form performs rank reduction and signal compaction implicitly, it does not explicitly consider storage or transmission constraints. We propose a Frobenius-norm Quantized Nonnegative Matrix Factorization algorithm that is 1) almost as precise as traditional NMF for decomposition ranks of interest (with in 1-4dB), 2) admits to practical encoding techniques by learning a factorization which is simpler than NMF’s (by a factor of 20-70) and 3) exhibits a complexity which is comparable with state-of-the-art NMF methods. Video surveillance is an important tool used in security and environmental monitoring, however, the widespread deployment of surveillance cameras has raised serious privacy concerns. Many privacy-enhancing schemes have been recently proposed to automatically redact images of selected individuals in the surveillance video for protection. To identify these individuals for protection, the most reliable approach is to use biometric signals as they are immutable and highly discriminative. If misused, these characteristics of biometrics can seriously defeat the goal of privacy protection. This dissertation presents design challenges and promising solutions for temperature and pressure sensors which are highly desirable for harsh-environment applications, such as turbine engines. To survive the harsh environment consisting of high temperatures above 1000°C, high pressures around 300 psi, and corrosive gases, the sensors are required to be robust both electrically and mechanically. Complex optical pulse shapes are typically generated from ultrashort laser pulses by manipulating the optical spectrum of the input pulses. This generates complex but periodic time-domain waveforms. Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation (OAWG) builds on the techniques of ultrashort pulse-shaping, with the goal of making non-periodic, truly arbitrary optical waveforms. An omnidirectional microstrip patch antenna, capable of reconfiguring both polarisation and radiation pattern is proposed. It operates with two orthogonal ±45° slanted linear polarisations and can produce two dipole-like radiation patterns, providing 360° coverage in either the horizontal or elevation plane. With appropriate steering, this enables a single antenna to provide full spherical coverage for any polarisation. The reconfiguration is realised by phase shifting, thus does not require switching elements, such as MEMS or pin diodes embedded into antenna. The basic principles of operation are discussed and validated by numerical and measured data.

A study was conducted to evaluate the competency of several types of electric cooktop ranges igniting a variety of common kitchen items. Four types of electric cooktop ranges were tested including a ceramic-glass cooktop range, an electric coil cooktop range, an electric coil cooktop range with cast iron plate installed, and an electric coil cooktop range with a temperature-limiting control sensor. A rectifier is an electrical circuit that converts alternating current to direct current, e.g., a half wave rectifier removes lower valleys of the AC voltage wave. If a capacitor is placed in parallel with a half wave rectifier, the transition from voltage peak to peak is smoothed to closer resemble constant DC voltage. The objective of this project was to model the voltage changes of a half wave rectifier with a parallel capacitor. It was found that the smoothness of the voltage waves increased as the capacitance of the capacitor increased.

This dissertation addresses the guided-mode resonance (GMR) effect and its applications. In particular, this study presents theoretical analysis and corresponding experiments on two important GMR devices that can be broadly described as GMR-enabled thin-film solar cells and flat-top reflectors.The GMR-induced enhanced absorption of input light is observed and quantified in a fabricated nano-patterned amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin-film. Compared to a reference homogeneous thin-film of a-Si, approximately 50% integrated absorbance enhancement is achieved in the patterned structure. Hybrid wireless network is a combination of ad hoc network and cellular network. A key question arising in such hybrid wireless networks is what is the per-node data transmission limit of the hybrid wireless network over general fading channels and how the throughput capacity varies with different network setup. In this dissertation, the comprehensive secondary control of electric power microgrids is of concern. Microgrid technical challenges are mainly realized through the hierarchical control structure, including primary, secondary, and tertiary control levels. Primary control level is locally implemented at each distributed generator (DG), while the secondary and tertiary control levels are conventionally implemented through a centralized control structure. The centralized structure requires a central controller which increases the reliability concerns by posing the single point of failure.
